Inside Story - Who was really behind the Lockerbie bombing?

  • As the world marks the 25th Lockerbie attack anniversary, we ask why there is no clarity on who was the perpetrator. To discuss this, Inside Story presenter Folly Bah Thibault is joined by guests: Jim Swire, who lost his daughter in the bombing and led a high-profile campaign for justice on behalf of the UK victims' relatives; Richard Marquise, then head of FBI's task force on the Lockerbie investigation; Morag Kerr, the author of 'Adequately Explained by Stupidity? Lockerbie, Luggage and Lies'; and Anas el-Gomati, the director general of Libya's first public policy think-tank Sadeq Institute.

    I was 25 when the bombing happened. I clearly remembered that a U.S. aircraft had shot down Iran Air flight 655 in the Persian Gulf, 6 months earlier. There had been warnings for months, that Iran might retaliate. The day after the bombing, someone called claiming to be from "the popular front for the liberation of palestine, general command" and they stated that it was revenge for the shoot down of the Iran Air flight. Iran and their proxy groups, took responsibility for the bombing ; Libya may have had a role but they were not the major player.

      The attack came from Iran, the bomb was made in Syria, and various agencies including the CIA were aware it was going to happen and allowed two of their agents to die while transporting a case full of narcotics and cash. Also UN Commissioner Bernt Carlsson was onboard, having not previously been booked on the flight, who was due to attend the signing ceremony on 22 December 1988 at United Nations headquarters of the New York Accords granting independence to Namibia, which had been illegally occupied by apartheid South Africa in defiance of UN Security Council Resolution 435. After his death the agreement was never ratified. So outgoing US president Ronald Ray Gun and incoming president H.W. Bush (villan no.1) continued to coin it in from the infamous Namibian scam known as 'Gem Diamonds'.

    • @TheScouseassassin
      @TheScouseassassin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also the death of the CIA agents neatly covered up a possible scandal that was brewing about the agency running drugs and cash around the world for 'friendly' warlords', after the Iran-Contra affair, H.W. Bush (murderer) didn't want to start his tenure with another scandal.

    The problem with Pan Am was that they didn’t want to invest in security as TWA did. I was working as a security in that time for TWA on Frankfurt airport and were trained by the Mossad, (Israel secret service) we received daily fax from FBI and from Scotland Yard warning us about a transistor radio or tape recorder with a bomb in it which would be smuggled in in a suitcase in Frankfurt , already 2 months before it happened and keeping receiving daily this same warning, we were so good trained that it was nearly impossible to smuggle anything on our flights but Pan Am hasn’t had any security for their flight which as we know by now was the weakest link and turned out to be fatal mistake. I been asking myself for years why those American Airlines didn’t cooperate in exchanging that vital security information’s their check in was only 10m apart and was the lack of security really for saving money or was there another reason????
    That we the bomb being smuggled in London Heathrow is not necessarily accurate it could have been Frankfurt (so we were told then) and the time of explosion in about 30 min. which is correct for barometric bombs but not necessarily the digital bombs.

    • @jennieespitalier

      I CAN TELL YOU THE WHOLE STORY FROM THE BEGINNING AT MADRIDS AIRPORT UNTILL PAN AMS AIRPLANE EXPODED OVER LOCKERBIE AND NOT OVER THE ATLANTIC OCEAN WHAT WAS PLANNED. BECAUSE OF DENSE AIR TRAFFIC THE 21 DECEMBER 1988 ON HEATHROW THE DUBBLE LAW PRESSURE BOMB WAS TICKING 20 MINUTES TOO MUCH. 20 MINUTES FROM LOCKERBIE IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. IRAN WANTED TO TAKE REVENGE FOR THE SHOOTING DOWN OF 2 MILITARY AIR PLANES OVER THEIR TERRITORY BY THE AMERICANS EARLIER THAT YEAR.

      The bombs were being placed by baggage handlers, there's nothing you can do about that, because they also operated the x ray equipment back then as well. Yes, the TWA bomb from 1986 was smuggled on board, that's right, but the subject in hand is baggage handlers placing the bombs, like ones ones at Heathrow. 1985 was also the year that Frankfurt airport got bombed also. The Mossad did nothing about those didn't they, so it's got nothing to do with you wanting to kick the Pan Am corpse, especially when 2 TWA flights were bombed and as recently as 1985 back then.
      Yes, from a smuggled bomb, but things had already evolved back then and it was a case at using people who operated the x-ray machines then to let the bombs on board.
      The problem as well with the TWA smuggled bomb was that most of the fuselage absorbed the explosion and it was able to land, with 7 dead, as you know, and they had to find the bodies of 4 of your mangled passengers on the ground, didn't they.
      But bombs were more effective from the luggage bay placed by the baggage handlers by 1988.

    Scotland has one of the best legal systems in the world. So say the legal system in Scotland! I have direct experience of the legal system in Scotland and I can say it is a disgrace to itself. Unfortunately it's just like every other legal system. The only people who believe the legal system is good is the people who work in it. Anyone who has been badly treated by a legal system - like myself - knows that the problem is that the legal system is terrified that a guilty person may walk away Scot Free so the entire system is designed to make sure that the most important element of the legal system is the people who work in it. All legal systems are self-serving and self-important. Look at England - they contrived a case against a member of parliament - Andrew Mitchell. The Plebgate incident saw an off-duty Police officer send a fake email to say that he heard the MP call the on-duty officer 'a Pleb'. It later came to light that the officer had lied and when Mitchell sued for libel he lost the case!!! Scotland pursued Megrahi on bad 'evidence' and the most import thing being the importance of the Scottish legal system they hunted him down and secured a conviction based on 'group-thinked' circular references. The big issue is that when the only suspect is a bad fit they still pursue it because it's all they have!! What happens to the idiot lawyers and Police officers who got it all wrong? Are they going to go to jail for sending an innocent man to jail? No - because when a legal system makes a colossal mistake it's called an 'honest mistake' but if any member of the public makes a genuine mistake it's called 'breaking the law'. We are all being oppressed by human beings who work in the legal systems around the world because they're all terrified that a guilty man 'gets away with it'. You only find out how bad they are when you're the guy getting stitched up because up to that point you just don't know that's what they do!! Currently we have the German legal system trying to fit-up a man for abducting Madelaine McCann. He may well be guilty but you just know that he's getting stitched up because someone has to get it. All legal systems shame themselves and Scotland's did that with aplomb. I'm ashamed of our legal system and what they did to Megrahi but the people involved are probably all retired on big pensions and will all keep their head down when the fact is they ruined a man's life. Their careers were defined by a totally blundered prosecution and they were rewarded with big pensions - at least they can enjoy their retirement!

They did the same thing in other attacks. Former mossad agent victor ostrovsky acknowledged in his book that Mossad had set up fake transmit messages which would convince the americans gaddafi was sponsoring terrorism and the disco bombing was also blamed on libya but a German tv show exposed it to be a CIA Mossad act.
