I don't know about Iran but here is something that no one else knows in the world and you can look this up. I'm pretty sure some Middle Eastern country was involved for the simple fact. There was a CIA agent aboard that plan who had just finished his mission in Lebanon.

- Actually, the CIA sent one of their Assets (Susan Lindauer) ) with a threat (Extreme Prejudice: By Susan Lindauer) to the Libyan embassy in Washington DC to tell the Libyan that, they were going to be blamed for PANAM flight103 and that Libya cannot deny it but to accept the blame if not Libya is going to be bomb to the stone age.
This was Why Muammar Gaddafi ( not A punk)came out STRONGLY and said NO, his country has nothing to do with it.
When he refused, America put punitive sanctions on Libya for over 10 years that destroyed the Libyan economy and forced Libya to send the 2 falsely accused agent to Scottland.
Since the 80s (Israel's deceptions in 1986 that made President Regan bombed Gaddafi's compound) America through Israel had been trying to kill Muammar Gaddafi which they finally succeeded in 2011
However, Libya had nothing to do with this incident and a lot of Libyans paid a price for something their country had nothing to do with.

Clearly one of the biggest links & clues pointing to a potential motive for the Lockerbie attack can be easily/reasonably linked to the US shooting down the Iranian civilian airliner in the summer of 1988 roughly six months before the Lockerbie attack. So any reference or suspicion into any potential links or motives between these two events is totally warranted & justified for investigators to look into. It doesnt mean that such potential motives or links are definitive proof but it does mean there is likely more to the story that could answer these questions posed by any investigation focusing on these two terrorist attacks in 1988. But as loaded as all that might be...sadly there is even more to these terror attacks that could lead to a larger investigation & conspiracy altogether. Such as any CIA misdeeds, geopolitical squabbles directed by US policy. Iranian/Syrian policy & not just Scotland Yard defensive roles with respect to their potentially flawed investigations but also over bearing US State Department policies that complicate geopolitical efforts to provide transparent & politically uncompromised investigations by the various geopolitical investigations into these matters.
My own personal research into these events has lead me down a murky rabbit hole that ties into many many events & scandals spanning from the fallout from Iran Contra to the Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait to the US invasion of Iraq in 1991. And sadly that is putting it lightly. My investigation has lead me to believe there is far more to these events than the public can possibly imagine.
Thank you, and where was and is the public outrage about the poor 300 Iranians that were killed by the US ?? We have to care about everyone and both sides of the story. Perhaps if the UK had been angry with the US about that incident, as it should have been, then perhaps there wouldn't have been reprisals. If we don't care about others, then others won't care about us - treat others as you wish to be treated.

There's a BBC documentary about the USS Vincennes shooting down of an Iranian Airlines passenger flight - it's on TH-cam. At the time, the BBC was making a report about the Vincennes - the high tech ship from the US Navy - at the time and they crew was on board the day they shot the civilian aircraft.
There's a powerful comment, on the documentary, made by another US Navy chip captain, btw. He retired after the even while the USS Vincennes comander not only received no punishment but also was promoted.
There's an older film by Allan Framcovich (In Company Business, Operation Gladio) about the bombing that brings the Iran-Contras into the case - together with a DEA investigation on heroing smuggling. Does anyone know if the information Framcovich brought up was later confirmed? He was an honest filmaker but he chose a difficult subject to talk about and sometimes, given the lack of hard evidence, he went with information from not very reliable sources. His films are, nonetheless, interesting, revealing and honest.
I'm not sure but my father personally knew John K Cooley in Cyprus and some of the things mentioned in your comment were also discovered by him and Pierre Salinger. Some of it was released to ABC news.

Prince Andrew , who made a Royal appearance on December 22nd at Lockerbie , was given the job of overseeing why an airliner had dropped on a Scottish town .... this sort of thing doesn't happen here , and if it does ... look out . MI5 and 6 are now on the job . Andrew moled into the Middle East and US political arenas . Intelligence showed that Reagan's administration was the guilty party , trying to erase evidence being transferred by that plane , that would bring the administration down . Result - Britain organised revenge on the next Republican administration - and blew away the World Trade Centre . Gaddafi agreed to take the blame for Lockerbie as a cover up of Scotlands revenge , having been in on it all along . The Libyan agent seen shaking hands with Scottish police on his release from prison - wouldn't of happened if Libya had been guilty . No country but Britain could have organised the WTC hit .... it,s a very fucked up world , but you really will be if you mess with the Scots .
