New Vauxhall Astra Electric Review: Good enough?

- Vauxhall is vying to be among the leaders of the mainstream car-makers when it comes to the shift towards electric motoring, and the new Astra Electric is one of the models at the forefront of its effort.
In fact, Vauxhall says that by the end of 2024 it'll offer a fully electric version of each of its cars, which in the case of the Astra means not only the conventional hatchback model, but also the Sports Tourer estate.
In this CarGurus UK review, Chris Knapman gets an early UK drive of the Astra Electric. Powered by a 156bhp electric motor and with a range of 258 miles from its lithium-ion battery, the Astra Electric seems to offer a solid package for those considering an electric vehicle. However, its performance might feel a touch disappointing (0-62mph takes 9.2 seconds), the boot space of the hatchback model is on the small side, and list prices are punchy to say the least, with the Astra Electric range starting from around £38,000.
All of which leads us to ask, would you choose an Astra over other electric models?

I can get this “nearly new” for £27k pre-reg, ‘24 plate, delivery mileage on it. Just waiting for it to arrive at the garage so I can test drive it. Seems good value for money based on this video. Small family, just the one toddler, and daily commute is
It's as tough they want to be able to say that every model is available as an ev, but they don't actually want to sell evs.
Looks like a great car and nice to see an EV option that doesn’t have an awful interior like the Teslas or a stupid giant screen sticking up into your vision or all the buttons hidden away on a touchscreen like so many do.
Does it come with a Luton button to engage rapid thermal disassembly?🤔🤔🤔
As a used heavily depreciated used vehicle it will find a place, for wise heads would always avoid any PSA wet belt engine so EV option could do a job.
Corsa not my cup of tea not as pretty as 208 and like driving in a pil box so this looks worthwhile.
Base model Ioniq 5 would be a better buy.
Bigger boot + sliding rear seats, more space, more power, can tow.
Stellantis are over-pricing and under-batterying their ev cars and the only one which can tow is the Combo/Rifter/Berlingo ev, which suffers from poor range because of its size and teensy-weentsy battery for its size.
Hmm....
At 04:20 in, you mention that the WLTP efficiency figure was 4.2 miles/kWh giving a range of 256 miles.
However, from the Astra's 50.8kWh useable battery capacity x 4.2 miles/kWh = 213 miles...! 🤔
5:13 89% and 256 miles on gom.
@@smaemurrayGOM means nothing. It's what the range is in the real world.
Is it mainly french parts ? Bashed together in some dirty old town in a wet windy Britain, then badged with a union jack and described as built in Britain? Bet its got a good ole Chinese battery 😊
Ridiculous no chance on earth for an Astra,, car manufacturers did a blinder with pcp years ago as wouldn’t be near these daft prices in 2023
Think il opt for the British MG , good old British quality 😂
I stopped the video when you were serious about the Astra E starting from £37k.😮 For a few grand more you can buy a Tesla model 3, & I know which one I'd rather have.👍 & In a years time it will be work 20k if that!👎 Vauxhall used to trade on value for money,💸 not anymore they ain't. & The base one that starts at 37k won't have all the kit, so you get the top spec one for thousands of pounds more, struth!😖😟👎 It would make a good used buy you would of thought though🤔
The mokka e dopped to around £12k after about a year. Truth is knowone even wants a scrap Vauxhall.
This type of car test that leaves out a lot of important information, a lot of important technical information and replaces it with a pile of personal opinions, personal choices and personal interpretations, which is always extremely uninteresting, is simply useless.
If you read the comments and know everything that is not said here and everything that is left out, you can only conclude that everyone who is watching this car test is completely deceived...
In conclusion: it’s expensive, has poor efficiency and just average charging speed… Why would any one buy this car? Just get a tesla model 3 standard range and you will be much better
I’d buy this over a Tesla in a heartbeat because the Tesla has an interior so hideous it would make me want to claw my eyes out every time I went for a drive
@@glenwalker4093 With all due respect, you would buy the wrong car.
@@rogeriogomesosorio4755 With all due respect you don't know what I want out of a car so what you might thing of as "wrong" I think of as perfectly "right"
@@glenwalker4093 you are right. If everyone would want the same, cars would be all equal.
It's probably the most efficient car in its class.
It's frustrating to have to rely on these low-range electric vehicles because Europe will ban internal combustion engine vehicles in 2035.
In just a few years these cars will be out-of-date compared to the newer cars that will be released. Battery tech is advancing at a rapid pace
Internal combustion! Sounds a disgusting as woodbines 😮
Sorry to expensive for a vauxhall, bring back the vxr
No.
Way too expensive, and so average in many areas.
What a joke …. Wont sell could end Vauxhall
An Astra and an EV.... Not much going for it then... Also unbelievably ugly even by ugly EV standards....
Had a look at how EVs are dropping in value?
BWAHAHAHAHAHA 40k for an Astra. Not only did they manage to create another bland car, regardless who owns them their cars are always devoid of any style or excitement, but they also managed to create a car that competes with much better options but is more expensive. You'd have to have rocks for a brain to get one of those.
Would look better with bigger wheels and a proper engine! Such a shame!😢
There range is terrible
It's a small battery and it takes up half the boot. Why probably all EV's should be a cross over. The battery has to go under the floor.
💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩
Unbelievable that anyone would buy these expensive and lousy electric cars from the Stellantis group. There are soo much better options out there.
Like what
You mean Teslas obviously -no thanks
@@CptSpears007 example was given in the video
All the other options have awful interiors though. This is one of the few interiors I could live with on a daily basis. I’d buy one.
@@glenwalker4093 Great to hear that you have found your favourite! And im glad that there are options available for us consumers.
