Your theories are so spot on! I never realized how much of similarities there are between the Observer and Xylarhotap as well as the many other characters. I really hope we learn more about Ash in the boss fight since in my mind there are still many questions I have about Ash.

For a metroidvania this game story/lore got a really impressive writing, i really hope they gonna do (a lot) more for it and not call it a day with the last dlc. I even wonder if there's more secret hidden within the game.
Maybe crazy stuff like involving taking the item from the white room in vanilla gambit into the afterlife update and using them at some point, unless they don't transfert over.
I also got an interesting visual glitch today, there's actually a clone of Sorun in front Cusith that you can see in the background, which is normally hidden by the foreground objects.
The DLC, as far as I can tell, ended up giving us more questions than answers, so I don't think the story is over yet. That said, I have no idea when or how we'll get more of it.

@@Rezard Hmmm... Not sure. I hop in and out, but most of the conversations seem valuable, and most of the people there love the game. Except for this one guy who complained that something wasn't intuitive because he never figured it out, and then when we said "Did you read the tombstones at the beginning?" He said no because tutorials are worthless and should be ignored.

@@purehollow You know, that's something I'd like to know more about myself. We know the "Heart of Gaia" was used to supplement the Source of Immortality, so that it was no longer necessary for other lives to be sacrificed to make someone immortal. But we don't know much else... Be awesome to get some time-travel DLC that takes us to the time where the Gaians were relevant.

Okay bear with me, but I think the "father" of the Eldritch hand isn't technically one of the 'fingers'. The game, Thalamus, and the devs explicitly go out of their way to liken the council of enemies as each finger of a hand of 'evil'. This is an interesting choice because it plays well into the concept of power of abilities of manipulation. Silly as it be, imagine Thalamus (or Ash given that Ash may have more influence than we know) as a thumb. Without thumbs, you can struggle to grasp and manipulate objects within your hand. Similarly, a pinky finger might seem relatively useless by comparison to others, but its smaller stature gives it purpose in basic dexterous acts such as music making.
Which is my long winded way of saying... imagine if you lost one finger, at random. No one finger acts as the lifeblood of the hand, and the thumb, while important, isn't necessary for the hand to function. So why would the father be a finger on the hand, and not be the palm itself. You can remove every finger and still have a 'hand' of sorts. It's more of a flappy stump but it's still the base. Remove the palm, and the entire hand falls apart. Likewise, this metaphor applies to the opposite concept of the divine hand.
Imagine if, say, the code we play death's gambit on are the 'palm'. Even if the devs gave up, the base dream, while it'd lose a lot of meaning, could still be played and enjoyed by future generations. But what if the code is gone? What then?
It might be a guess, but if the concept of hands and fingers are followed to the bone, it could be safe to say that there's an unseen threat. There's still one boss yet to be revealed after all. I'm certain it's Ash, but whose to say Ash didn't go back to work with the last remaining member.
Hmmm. Good point. A whole new enemy none of us expected beyond Ash would be awesome, and I like the analogy of maybe-Azathoth as the palm. We shall see. =D

This game and your lore videos about it are way too underrated. I also want to mention that the eldritch hand is not just inspired by Lovecraft alone but also by the god hand from Berserk. And thats not the only reference, Iones father is Guts in his Berserker armor, even the egg you craft to summon the god is basically an behelit.

Ohh, I didn't think about the Berserk references. I've never read/watched it, so I'm not as familiar with that lore, but now that you mention it, I can definitely see that.

I actually found the Zuma riding around on top of the shoulder of a Stone Giant wandering around an icy field that you can teleport to. He says some new dialogue, gave me a skill point and then teleported me away.

I'm glad I found the channel when looking for videos of deaths gambit, the analysis of thalamus and the eldrich hand are very good! The game has very curious and interesting characters that I now understand more, thanks for all that!

In the new Ashes of Vados DLC, Ash mentions the sleeping father in a new line of dialogue. When you fight Ash in his Heroic fight, it instead lists the fight as "The Eldritch Hand."
The Nier/Ash issue is quite difficult to reason with. There was foreshadowing before Afterlife that Sorun had a brother, but we can assume it was left out due to time constraints. However, in Afterlife, Ash was renamed Nier, and Ash was turned into Sorun's sibling.
The equivalent of the Father could instead be Gaia herself. She is the mother of all life, and her life was taken and put into the Source of Immortality, whereas the Father could represent true death, and nothingness. Alternatively, the Divine Order could be the antithesis to the Father.
is Ashes of Vados DLC worth it??? Does it add a lot of new story content and bosses?
@@peterc504 Yes, Afterlife is considered the "complete" game, and is the finished product of the game without time constraints. It revamps a ton of items, boss fights, levels, and adds entirely new levels, bosses, and items. It is almost an entirely new game.
I think during sorun flashback of when the inquisitor capture everly and ash ,the inquisitor refer to ash as a half demon child. though an eldrith being could probably be categorize as a demon as well. But it could just be him talking about ash being evil as a demon metaphorically or i remember the cutscene wrong.
otherwise, great video, I love this game and seeing it's lore being explored really make my day
The soldier did say he had demon's blood, but most people don't know about beings from outside their reality, such as the exiled gods. So to them, they're all considered demons, because they don't know what else to call them. So it's hard to say for sure, but I think it was just him saying something was wrong, or inhuman with Ash. Totally agreed I got it for measly 4.99 At the time I was short on time and played it for 5 mins and kinda hated it. Later I had more time to devote to it & unfortunately my mom had passed away at the same time....crazy how what I was going thru was what the main character was as well. It hit me hard and its one of my fav games of ALL TIME. However currently Im stuck in afterlife with 130 will and i cannot for the life of me beat the 5th and last heroic. But I dont think it will matter bc my will is too high to get it back under 100????

Neir being the eldritch guide does make sense since in the original release of deaths gambit she appeared with a young Ash on her back. While yes that's no longer canon to an extent, it clearly shows some sort of connection
Agreed. Additionally, before the Afterlife expansion, she was the only other character that could upgrade your gear, implying another link to Zuma. Buuut it's not clear whether that was Nier or Ash doing it for you, and... well. We can't really use it as evidence, even though like you, it helped me piece it together.

I just achieve ending A and I think there could be a secret ending telling us what happen to Ash and Thalamus at the end, we didn't really defeat him after all and have the option to continue with an eye Thalamus but ruining the ending A, Aaaaah to many questions without answers

As for Ash, don't worry, we're getting more about him soon. = ) There's at least one more big update coming which will add Ash as an additional boss in the game, and I cannot waaaait. I wanna see if the update confirms or denies my theory on him. =P

As for Garde Tum, the short answer is that it is an ancient civilization that fell hundreds or maybe thousands of years before the events of the game. They were tricked by Thalamus and Xyarlohapt into using the Source of Immortality, and then when they became immortal, Thalamus stole the source away and started doing his thing to the people who could now never die to escape him.
Bysurge suggested they escape by moving their consciousness into a digital form, abandoning their bodies to live as immortal data instead. The result was Garde Tum as we see it now, with Bysurge an insane Robot beast, feeding on the energy produced by the facility while the helpless citizens of Garde Tum traded one immortal prison for another.

The Eldritch Hand is Thalamus, Ash, Nier, and Xyarlohatp. This is confirmed by the "Eldritch Hand" boss fight, and several pieces of in-game lore, mostly connected to the secret area.

Ash and that dragon lady being members of the eldritch hand kinda doesn't make sense to me because if they then why they don't seem to have their own realms kinda like how thalamus has the nightmare realm and death have the afterlife and xyarlohatp ( oh wait xyralohatp technically doesn't have a realm because he doesn't stay in one place and also the realm we fight him in called realm of exiled ( gods ) so okay I actually don't really what's happening and I am getting a headache
Lol. It can be a bit confusing, no worries.
So, we know Ash and Nier are members of the Eldritch hand mostly because of information discovered during the ARG, and the Secret Area. There's a stone in Thalamus's Nightmare Hellscape that specifically says "Ash will be the final member of the Eldritch Hand."
As for Nier, her name appears with the others in the hints about the Eldritch Hand, and she also has a special sprite in the game's data that we haven't seen in game yet, which looks exactly like sprites each other member of the Hand has.

Oh, I'm all but certain he meant Thalamus, or maybe the entirety of the Eldritch Hand. = ) I think he and the Grey Wanderer became opposites as well - he sequestered himself away to find a way to stop the Eldritch Hand on a universal scale, while the Grey Wanderer threw her lot in with them.
@@Wilveren May I ask your opinion on Almulvaro appearing in the Black Wanderer fight. If he oppose the Eldritch Hand why did he help her, or is it just an illusion create by the Wanderer.
Also pretty confused about the whole "Great sorcerers" thing (Almuvaro, the Black, the Grey....)
@@patriotarmy490 I believe that's just an illusion, or phantom created by the Wanderer. Pretty sure that's not the true Amulvaro.
As for the mages, we know of The Black and The Grey - who are the same person - We know Amulvaro is likely The Blue, and we know that Alistair was one of them, before he got turned into the snail. As far as I know, we don't know who the fifth one is.

In the eldritch hand bossfight we see a mouth with eye in the middle , the same one thalamus uses in his ( power of god ) attack , the thing is when you fight it the health bar says ??? Which is weird we already know thalamus , at least more than xyarlohatp and neir and yet it still ???
Could it be that it's not actually thalamus
Maybe it belongs to the dormant father ( how they call him ) ?
I noticed that too. I feel like it was an odd decision, especially since the shadowy figure floating there with the others is almost certainly Thalamus's Avatar, so I'm wondering what it means. Have we crippled his influence so much that his name is all but forgotten? Or was he impersonating the Father when he used that attack?

My theory is perhaps seron father is the father they hinted at. Think about it we know almost nothing about him. Almost as if every being want him block off from memory. Same might say he might be a sleep. Any way nice going with the video
Hmm. While it's true we don't know much about Sorun's father, there isn't currently anything tying him to the Eldritch Hand, except that he too was lost on an expedition to obtain the Source. Sorun was so young when his father left, he doesn't have many memories of him, but still it is curious that we don't hear about him more than we do. Thank you though, glad you liked the vid. = )
One thing I'm curious about: unlike with the observer and sorun, xyarlohatp doesn't seem to exert his will on ash, sorun's equivalent. If so, how does xyarlohatp's role as observer assist the eldritch hand?
We can only guess, really. We know Xyarlo informs Thalamus at least, from the in-game lore in the Migration Chamber, and Thalamus's Twitter post. But we don't have any solid evidence he provides guidance for Ash, at least not yet. I'm hoping we'll get some info that will confirm or deny the theory soon.

This video is before the Ashes of Vados DLC, which means the Arena of Blood and the Eldritch Hand fight didn't exist yet.
