  • April 2016. Norfolk, England. The male tawny owl day-roosts in our nest box while the female is incubating eggs elsewhere. Its not always peaceful or without incident.

Amazing footage, thanks for sharing! I loved his expression when the wood pigeon got on his box, he was like "Excuse me?" haha

You are welcome Glaiceana. The pair of tawny owls nested in the box this year (2017) and raise 3 young. I have put a collection of videos of egg laying to fledging on bit.ly/NorfolkTawnies if you want to see more of their antics.

Really enjoyed this! I'm thinking of getting an owl box for our garden - we hard the Tawny calls most nights (Suffolk). This might just have persuaded me. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you enjoyed it David and that it may have inspired you to put up a box of your own. If you can get it installed before the end of January you just might be lucky to have a resident this year. They typically lay eggs in March/April. Good luck.

Glad you enjoyed it @Kerry Kestrowl. Keep an eye on my channel. I hope to live stream the new nest box cameras next nesting season - if they choose to nest there that is. This is Nature so who knows eh?

It's like a cat with wings, isn't it. Interesting film.

Beautiful insight into the owl´s life! I´ve made and put up many dozens of boxes for townies but have never known what´s going on inside! :) Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Petr, and well done for for putting up so many owl nest boxes. We are so lucky to have the box close enough to the house to be able to put cameras on it. Glad you found it useful. Our pair have nested in another site some distance away this year so no videos I'm afraid. Next year maybe.

I LOVE your vid! Captivating, just watching all this life in your garden! The pigeons: lovely capture!! Thanks +++ for sharing. There's something though that I found perplexing: having watched other vids about owls, I've noticed other birds get really close to them, trying to "bully" them, is it my imagination? Anyway, Nature offers thrillers I do enjoy immensely!

Hi merveilleuxetmagique. Thank you for your comments. I am glad you liked the video. Yes, you are quite correct about other birds getting very close to tawny owls when they are trying to persuade it to go away. Blackbirds in particular do this and are very brave, flying within a few centimetres past the tawny owl and making a lot of noise to warn others of the danger. Although they know the owl is a predator they also know that the owl is not (usually) quick enough to catch it when it flies past. Being a nocturnal hunter the owl may catch the blackbird - or its chicks - when it is roosting at night. You can see this on some of my other videos in this playlist th-cam.com/play/PL1fGVyZEdBHnu6cVioQ2o-IfSHbNsmk1e.html

Love the video. Which way is your Owl Box facing ? (I notice early morning sun on the owl) I am building an Owl Box for a Tawny Owl and currently trying to choose the best location etc

    • @DaveGWIS

Thanks Chris Green. It's facing north (the preferred direction) but east through north to west generally works for them OK. My box is 5m up in a conker tree but other branched trees are OK, particularly if they are in a wood or copse. There is a decent unrestricted flight-line to the nest box but a few branches close to the box which the owlets can get to when they 'fledge' (They cannot fly when they leave the nestbox but are pretty good at climbing). Good luck with yours.

Hi David, I'm creating videos for some tracks off my bands first album and one of our tracks is called "Night Owl" which has sound footage recorded of Tawney's right outside my friends recording studio. Would it be ok if I used some snippets of your video please?
Obviously we would put your name in the credits.
    Many Thanks
    Gary

Hi SongSticks. Thanks for the contact. I don't see a major issue but I'd like to have a quick chat before I press the 'go' button. How best to PM or contact you? I think TH-cam have removed the PM facility.
