I am really blown away by all your comments, I have responded to them all. Thanks so much to all my new subscribers. Also a lot of live albums mentioned I actually have never heard, so I will be on the hunt for a lot of them. If you happen to stumble across this video and like it, please do subscribe. Kansas, Two for the Show. The 30th Anniversary release has more than the original release. They were in their prime on this release. If you have not had the opportunity to listen to this gem, treat yourself and turn it up.
I absolutely agree with you about UFO with one exception. Listen to the studio albums first and then the live album. They will get the full effect of how powerful a band they were. If you listen to the live album first, the studio albums fall flat, especially the first 3
My favorite live album is Rush's Exit....Stage Left. Brilliant channel though and appreciate all the recommendations. Recently ordered Genesis' A Trick of the Tail on vinyl. Great stuff Pat!
Si, es un disco fantástico!!. Con ' Squonk', ' Ripples'...el tema que da título al disco ' A trick of the tail', es una delicia...( Es el único disco d Génesis post- Gabriel, que me gusta...). Phil Collins es un gran batería...!!! Enorme!!!, y buen cantante...
Oh, guys. I agree with your Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Deep Purple, and UFO choices, but there’s many others. At the end you did mention Skynyrd, so excellent video. 1. Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More For/From The Road 2. The Allman Brothers - Live At Fillmore East 3. Cheap Trick - Live At Budokan 4. John Hiatt - Hiatt Comes Alive!(At Budakon?) 5. Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive! 6. KISS - Alive! 7. Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison 8. Jackson Browne - Running On Empty 9. Bob Seger - Live Bullet 10. The Who - Live At Leeds Honorable Mention: The Band - The Last Waltz
If you believe Tony Visconti (the album's producer) there's very little of the album that's actually 'live'. There's a documentary out there somewhere where he explains how pissed-off Lynott was when he heard Frampton Comes Alive as it was clearly heavily dubbed from the live performance. What started off with members of Lizzy making a couple of changes ended-up with not much live material surviving.
I'm absolutely stunned that neither one of you especially at your age did not pick "The Who's Live At Leeds". "Young Man Blues" and "Magic Bus" those two songs alone on that live album does it for me but the rest of it is great too. It is easily one of my top picks and is many others from what I've heard on these lists.
Grateful Dead - Cornell University 1977 Rory Gallagher - Live in Europe Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys Neil Young - Year of the Horse Van Morrison - Too Late to Stop Now Bob Dylan - Live Albert Hall 66 Rolling Stones - Get Yer Ya-Yas Out Allman Brothers - Fillmore East Gary Moore - Live in London Keith Jarrett - Koln Concert

Pat, I have Live Dates by Wishbone Ash. It's a great album. Yessongs with Perpetual Change...amazing. Second's Out by Genesis...great. Welcome Back My Friends by ELP, my favourite band is, brilliant. As you can tell, I'm a prog rock freak, so to speak. Keep up the great work Pat. I'll definitely keep coming back to your channel.
The version of Starship Trooper/Wurm on Yessongs is mindblowing. Welcome Back is an absolute adventure. Supper's Ready on Seconds Out is brilliant too.

Ramones - It's Alive. It's not just the best Ramones album, it is easily the best live punk-rock album of all time and perhaps one of the best live albums ever recorded. Twenty-eight songs clock in under 48 minutes!
Brilliant video guys, you both just hit off each other. My top 3 live albums would be, 1 Humble Pie, Live at the Filmore, 2 Queen Live Killers, 3 Pulse Pink Floyd. Well done to you both.
Rory Gallagher Irish Tour '74 👍......Humble Pie Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore! from Fillmore East May 1971 👍......And I agree 100% on Led Zeppelin's "How The West Was Won" from shows at the L.A. Forum and the Long Beach Arena in May 1972, Led Zeppelin was the real deal, they were the template for Hard Rock Bands to come. From '69 through '77 I was very lucky to see Led Zeppelin 39 times, including the 2nd & 3rd concerts at MSG in NYC which became the film "TSRTS", powerful concerts those two nights. But a little disappointed with some of the 'live' three album set. That's why my #1 'live' album is "How The West Was Won"🎸🎤🎸🥁..........Bonzo 🥁 R.I.P. 🙏 (P.S. A Big Nod to FREE LIVE recorded in January, March, September of 1970, Released right after the band broke up in 1971, it went to #4 in the U.K. Brilliant 'live' album, great bass solo by Andy Fraser 🙏 on "Mr. Big", Kossoff brilliant as usual but gone too soon 🙏, Simon Kirke rock steady behind the kit and Paul Rogers one of the great vocalist in rock history) 👍
@@matthewblanchard9301 Brilliant Mathew, I never saw Led Zeppelin and you saw them 39 times, wow that must have been amazing. Yes, Free were a great band, not particularly my cup of tea so to speak but brilliant musicians and Rodgers was a brilliant vocalist. Thanks for your comment.

1. Seconds Out - Genesis 2. Live And Dangerous - Thin Lizzy 3. Strangers In The Night - UFO 4. Stage Struck - Rory Gallagher 5. Frampton Comes Alive - Peter Frampton 6. Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree 7. Irish Tour 74 - Rory Gallagher 8. Rush In Rio - Rush 9. Live Scenes From New York - Dream Theater 10. Secret World Live - Peter Gabriel Those are my top ten. Some good choices form you lads. Good to see and Irish Prog featured channel. Agree about A Trick of The Tail, I think it is Post-Gabriel Masterpiece. It's true once Steve left it was never the same as they rejected a lot of the material he out forward, which he of course used on his own albums. That being said I still think Phil did a great job on vocals on Seconds Out, and always performed all the old songs/medleys live brilliantly. And Then There Were Three seemed so disjointed a record, but had some brilliant tracks on it like Down And Out, Deep In The Motherlode and Burning Rope, but really missed the romanticism of Steve's contributions. Duke I thought was a better album all in all, Duke's Travels I thought was very 'proggy' and seemed like a Swansong to the 70's even though it was as 80s album. Good vid again guys and thanks for posting.
@mikeowen1192 That is if course true, but Tony Visconti produced it in such a way that record flowed like it was a live concert. It's a terrific album.
@@thomaspetzak4993 Thanks, Thomas, we could fit in what we really liked, but we left a lot of brilliant live albums out. I appreciate your comment very much.
Like your video guys. I've subscribed. I knew within minutes that my favourite live album wouldn't get a mention. But that's cool. Some great choices. I love seconds out. It's incredible. Deep purple was a good shout and as for Thin Lizzy live and dangerous, that's the album anyone starting a band should listen to. That's how it's done. Peace
New to your channel gentlemen..this is a great way to start my subscription..live albums by 2 Irish fellas of my age, talking so knowledgeable..I have heard most if not all of your lists..keep the great videos going
Loved listening to your banter and analysis. Great span of brilliant artists and I couldn’t fault any of your respective inclusions. However you both omitted what is (in my humble opinion) by far and away greatest live album of all time, namely The Who Live In Leeds. Raw, produced from virginal master tapes the power of what was the greatest live rock combo of all time, when played at No 11 through your amp, unleashes unbridled mayhem and joy to the senses. Close your eyes whilst listening and you’re there in the auditorium watching the mastery of Entwistle, the mania of Moon, the brilliance of Townshend and the craft of Daltry. Absolute bliss and soul cleansing to boot. Then again I appreciate just how subjective music is so well done both of you.

Great lists, all of the albums you feature would be in my top 10. One obscure honourable mention is an album I play a lot - Kansas, King Biscuit Flower Hour. This one features Steve Morse on lead guitar on which he covers Robbie Steinhardts violin parts, Steinhardt of course at that time had left the band. Mind blowing playing, and a great performance by Steve Walsh who is in great voice, having tamed most of his demons at the time. Highly recommended.

Have you two ever seen/heard Rush's R30 concert that was recorded/filmed in Frankfurt Germany? That show is head and shoulders above anything else by any other band for a live performance. Geddy, Alex, and Neil were at their absolute peak for rock musicians.
@@JRTrilling I have that on DVD and the opening melody of tracks are one of the best openings from any band. Thanks so much for reminding me of that amazing concert.
Made in Japan vs How the West was won. Talk about a heavyweight battle. I can't decide between the two. Both have a special spot in my cd Collection. Great ranking lads.
My top live albums.... Jethro Tull Burstin Out, UFO Strangers in the Night, Cheap Trick Live at Boudakon, Who Live at Leeds, Humble Pie Live at Fillmore, Thin Lizzy Live & Dangerous, Kiss Alive, Genesis Live, Uriah Heep live 73, Alcatrazz Live No Parole,
Exit Stage Left is good, but KISS is by far the best live album - I bought it new and I still listen occasionally. Every single song except the last one is a banger, they just leap off the album to this day; audience completely engaged, energetic frontman, top drawer playing, and what people forget is that they did it all in 7 inch heels. Apart from that I really enjoy Pearl Jam Live At Benaroya Hall; it's a great low key show, guilty pleasure Les Folies Aphrodite by Kylie Minogue is superb; it's her first show in London after she beat breast cancer and the film and stage show are spectacular. Metal head choice Live S*^t Binge & Purge by Metallica; from 92-93 when they were at their nadir
Nice chat gentlemen, always like live albums but found your comment on King Crimson interesting. I have the vinyl and found sometimes it seemed a bit intrusive in parts if you know what I mean. I'm going to have to hunt out the cd now to compare.
Great video guys... My choices (1) Johnny Winter And Live (personal favourite), (2) Strangers in the Night (3) All The Worlds a Stage (4) Sensational Alex Harvey Band Live (5) Humble Pie Performance (6) Hawkwind Space Ritual (7) Live at Leeds/Hull (8) How The West Was Won (9) Frank Marino Live (10) Mountain Twin Peaks (HM) Genesis Live - It would be in my top 5 if it included Supper's Ready. Byron, Box, Hensley, Thain, Kerslake, Uriah Heep Live 73, best live album ever, not doctored, includes all the mistakes...Brilliant. Other faves, UFO, Strangers In The Night, Styx, Return To Paradise and Europe live acoustic where they do great covers of Zep, UFO Floyd and Lizzy
Those are all fabulous choices. I have a number of those, mostly on vinyl, but some on CD. MIJ is and always will be my favorite live album. It is just great from start to finish. Don't sleep on the Live In Japan three concert set, though. The way they change things around for each song is just something to enjoy. I believe that they chose the tracks on MIJ, because they had better sound quality than some of the others, which they fixed, as technology was improved in that department. West is the best Zep live album. It was recorded before Page's and Bonham's addictions started to affect their live performances later on, notably in 1975 and later. One night great and the next, not so much. Either way, this is an excellent channel and I subscribed.
A great video. My top 5 live albums are Iron Maiden Live after Death Pink Floyd Is There Anyone Out There Black Sabbath The End Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous Elvis Presley Live At Square Garden
@@CloseToTheEdge-Prog I think that main stream radio had a big part of rock bands success back in the day. You only heard The Boys Are Back In Town, and Jailbreak on the radio. Thin Lizzy was able to build a huge fan base in the US despite the lack of radio exposure, and many other bands credit them for being influential. Play The Cowboy Song for anyone that has never heard it, and watch their reaction. 👍
@@briankaysen3410 Yes, Brian probably so, even over here they only barely played a few songs by them on mainstream radio. They were big here in Ireland but they were huge in the UK and Europe. Thanks Brian.

Great picks! Everyone will have their personal favorites. One of mine, and truth be told, isn't a pure live LP, has a bit of studio thrown in, is Moonflower by Santana...1977. I saw them in that tour, at Cobo Arena, Detroit....unbelievable energy, I really believe he wad at his primevat that time. Oh, and the very first LP I ever purchased as a 14 yo punk kid, was Live at Leeds...$3.71 with tax at the now defunct K-Mart. Great episode, guys!

Allman Brothers "Live at the Fillmore East". This album likely preceeded the start date of your list. The little known overseas lead & slide guitarist was a session player at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoales Alabama playing guitar for a Who's Who of soul, jazz, blues and R&B artists. By chance Eric Clapton asked him to play on 10 of the 14 songs on the album "Layla & Other assorted Love Songs". He created the lead riff on the song "Layla" and played slide guitar to complement Eric's lead guitar. He was the "Lead guitarist" on "Why does love got to be so sad". Eric asked Duane Allman to join Derek & The Dominos. He did play live with the Dominos at 2 concerts, however, declined to join D & D. He had more ambitious plans in creating "The Allman Brothers Band.
1.Live and Dangerous Thin Lizzy 2. Strangers in the night UFO 3. Captured Live Johnny Winter 4. On Stage Rainbow 5. Band of Gypsies Jimi Hendrix 6. In the west Jimi Hendrix 7. Made in Japan Deep Purple 8. Made in Europe Deep Purple 9. Live Robin Trower 10. If you want blood AC DC
@@nolslifegren jury still out on just how "LIVE" the Lizzy album actually turned out it's in my top 10 too but is tainted by the rumours of some of the guitars (especially Robbo's who made so many mistakes due to being off his tits 😂) being re-done in a studio and re-inserted later 🤔

The live set that Rush included with their 40th anniversary reissue of Moving Pictures is my favorite live album, and I don’t listen to a lot of live recordings. This is what Exit…Stage Left should have sounded like. As an aside, Rush in Rio is an excellent live collection from a tour that many of us thought would never happen after Neil Peart endured the tragic deaths of his daughter and wife. I agree that live albums should almost always be doubles. I know that they wanted to keep the prices low in many cases but that first Genesis Live album should have included Supper’s Ready and had four sides…if it did it would be one of the best ever live albums no question.
:I didn't want to include boots, like Zep's Listen To This Eddie) and I don't feel like seqencing them but here goes: - All Zep live: every song sounds/feels different than the studio version and all the live versions sound/feel different from each other (per their "always forward" mantra)... - Made in Japan: the live version of every song here utterly destroys it's studio counterpart. Quite possible the ultimate in classic HARD rock... - Welcome Back...: ELP at their absolute apex. Fantastic covers of classical pieces, fantastic solo segments, fantastic versions of their own stuff, fantastic variety... fantastic... fantastic... - Live at Carnegie Hall: Renaissance at their apex. Annie Haslam sends me into ecstasy while Jon Camp's bass solo as a fully fleshed out composition is maybe the best ever... - Live 2009: Mostly Autumn besting their classic forebears. From tight, short, and beautitul songs to lengthy epic compositions with excellent ensemble playing and individual musicianship... - 9012Live, The Solos: perfection with it's mix of classic prog individual musicianship and modern rock sonwriting. - All CTS live: Crack The Sky is always my secret weapon on lists like this. Having seen them 30+ times out of 500+ concerts in all, I love to tout the musicianship and songwriting of my local boys (originally from Pittsburgh, settled later on in the Baltimore/Annapolis area). I must also stress that - live on stage - they superior to most of and are at least the equal of everybody and anybody on stage that I have seen live in my life. They're basically 14 arms with one brain, it's incredible.
I must include, Hendrix- band of gypsies, Frampton comes alive, Ten years after undead, Fleetwood Mac -live at the warehouse, Fleetwood Mac- live at the Boston tea party, Johnny Winter And live, Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore, Pink Floyd Ummagumma, Pink Floyd - Pulse concert, Humble Pie Performance, James Gang Live, Derek and the Dominos Live at the Filmore. That's my top 12 live albums.
I seen Genesis in Cleveland a bunch of years ago. We had some really good redbud. I was so wasted when I got there. @@Arseverse That he was. Thanks.
@groant3598 I've always that a live album to sound that good, had to be dubbed. Thanks for that info.
I'm absolutely stunned that neither one of you especially at your age did not pick
"The Who's Live At Leeds". "Young Man Blues" and "Magic Bus" those two songs alone on that live album does it for me but the rest of it is great too. It is easily one of my top picks and is many others from what I've heard on these lists.

Those are my top ten.

Good job lads … my top 5 would be KISS “Alive”, Cheap Trick “Live at the Budokan”, Rush “Exit - Stage Left”, Peter Frampton “Frampton Comes Alive” and Queen “Queen Rocks Montreal”. The last one because it’s an awesome compilation and also because I was there!

Thanks, Peter for that detailed comment and information I didn't know.

@@ridleyclayburn4599 I've just ordered it. Thanks.
Great choices fellas! But the highlight has to be your pronunciation of ‘Tick As A Brick’. Long live our accents!

How do you leave out Live at Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers? It should be in the top 3!

Where is Live at Budichan
@@MarkWallace-zo7bt I presume you mean Cheap Trick. We could only fit so many in, but I should have mentioned that album. Thanks Mark.
Well done, gentlemen.
Dave

I agree with you main Japan was the best live album ever recorded. Deep Purple is just amazing all those guys. It was so sad when I watched them when they broke up and I didn’t get to see them when they made that and I seen them twice, but really I enjoy listening to them on my stereo. I’ll put them on and listen to them all day.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Deep Purple has a special place in so many hearts, and it's great to hear how much you enjoy their music.
Dr.Feelgood ,Stupidity is a fantastic live album 😊nice video very enjoyable

I agree that live albums should almost always be doubles. I know that they wanted to keep the prices low in many cases but that first Genesis Live album should have included Supper’s Ready and had four sides…if it did it would be one of the best ever live albums no question.
@@scottmcrae3355 Yes, that first live album is way too short. Imagine if Suppers Ready was on it. Thanks for the comment.
:I didn't want to include boots, like Zep's Listen To This Eddie) and I don't feel like seqencing them but here goes:
- All Zep live: every song sounds/feels different than the studio version and all the live versions sound/feel different from each other (per their "always forward" mantra)...
Having seen them 30+ times out of 500+ concerts in all, I love to tout the musicianship and songwriting of
my local boys (originally from Pittsburgh, settled later on in the Baltimore/Annapolis area). I must also stress that - live on stage - they superior to most of and are at least the equal of
everybody and anybody on stage that I have seen live in my life. They're basically 14 arms with one brain, it's incredible.
Fantastic comment! You really know your music. Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and detailed comment.

Everybody said it was a great show too and I missed the whole thing.
