Certainly surprised to see it fail so quickly but showing the issues without sugar coating was a good choice. Still want an FAL, still think they r awesome
Great video! This is what I think most guntubers get wrong they put the rifle in an unrealistic scenario where guns like the ar seals out very good, but all firearms will fail, what no one mentions is how quick it can get back into the fight! I want a R1 more and more every day!😂
The sand cut was devised for actual dry sand. I don't recall if it was the Brits or Israelis who did it first but it was done in dry/desert environments. I'm not sure they ran into much mud. I would love to see DSA come up with a FAL 2.0: basically the same setup but with a rotating locking bolt and improved bolt carrier. If you want to see some truly custom FALs check out Vandenberg Guns out of Texas. Vandenberg even has an actual free float handguard (as far as a piston rifle can be free float).
The sandcuts didn't do much improving reliability according to SADF trials. The R1s did not have them on their rifles. I have heard of Vanden Berg Customs. Not my cup of tea. Well, if you want to change the bolt then you'd have to change half of the gun. And DSA won't be doing that anytime soon
Well, the IMBEL IA2 is, basically, an FAL with a rotating bolt. The IA 2 derives from the MD series, which were intend to be an FAL but in 5.56. They found out in early prototypes that the tilting bolt was not reliable with 5.56, so they went with an AR-15 style of 7 lug rotating bolt. The IA 2 comes both in 5.56 and 7.62, using STANAG and metric pattern FAL mags respectively. So, it's kinda the FN SCAR we have at home for Brazil.
Very interesting, would've thought the sand/ groove cuts in the BCG would've helped move the soup and keep it moving, but there must've been enough grit in the mud mix to snag everything up. Thanks for showing us the test bru!
Boet, lekker video. Just a few points. The para system was always a bit more temperamental than the fixed stock even in sand. I saw that enough times with our shortened para models when training on ranges. Guys ploughing into the "lê houding" because the instructor was in a foul mood and made them do it repeatedly. Never happened to any of us in an actual contact though. Second thing, take care with grabbing that mag like that. I know lots of us did it with the R1s but DSA FALs do not have the safety sear like on the military FAL. There is therefore a slight chance of an out of battery discharge. Should that happen all the gas is vented into the mag and that's not pretty. Very unlikely thing to happen, but it did happen to a US friend of mine using steel cased ammo. Fortunately whilst he was shooting on sandbags so his hand was nowhere near the mag. Your videos made me look for a 16 inch FAL locally, now I just need a spare 2995 Euros to pay for it. Cheers
Mhmm interesting regarding the mag. Could it also be because your buddy fired steel cased ammo? I have yet to hear something positive regarding FALs and steel cases ammo...
@@thefalguy9848 Perfect storm of steel case ammo and the unfortunate lack of the safety sear. Back in the days of the old FAL Files there were a few cases mentioned like that. Not so likely to happen with brass ammo, although there was one case mentioned with Radway Green ammo. I think that was a "FAL Kit" though so who knows what went on with the build. In the end it's just something to keep in mind. It shows the difference between rifles fitted with the safety sear and those without it. Unfortunately DSA has to make them without safety sears because of the legal requirements. In SA I was 10 years in the "mag" and shot R1s a lot on the job and in the old "Diensskiet" and never saw anything like that with any of them. Also not with my own privately owned Belgian FAL. So I was a bit surprised to hear about it. Steel cased ammo is not something I would use in a FAL. Leave it for the G3s and bolt actions.
The fact that this is a DSA FAL makes me wonder if that add to the malfunction in some way. I am also curious if the G3 and AR10 would do better. Keep up the good work.
the f***.... FALs have the design flaw that they do not cycle well if mud is poured into the system due to the exposed chamber/ bolt. If you can close the dust cover on the AR10 it would not happen that quickly
I hate that the fal is so easy to induce a malfunction, and the gas system is so finicky to tune. I still love my fal. Even tho it almost never runs right. Lol
I have a question? If you are being fired upon, and you don’t have this much time to do what you’re doing to get it back into battery, couldn’t you pour water into the chamber to temporarily get it functioning and clean it later when the threat has been eliminated? 🤷🏼♂️ Just a quick suggestion and thank you for another great video!
It's a fantastic rifle setup. And this 16" Para runs like a champ. Yes, it's heavy and the recoil is slightly sharper than on a regular FAL but the heavy front-end helps reduce muzzle climb. Overall 10/10, would buy again.
@@thefalguy9848 I've got a pre-ban DSA SA58 carbine, standard recoil system. I've been considering converting it to the para so I can put a nice folding stock on it but have been hesitant over reliability concerns.
Pretty much every rifle miserably fails this test outside of AR pattern rifles. Including bolt actions. In and of itself it doesn’t make the rifle not “battle worthy”.
The dirt got into the chamber and on the rails the bolt carrier runs on. Would not have been able to "carry on with mission" if I would not have cleaned it properly

I like how you actually went through getting the gun working again. Very practical. Other guntubers should take notes

100%. The grit messed up the bolt carrier

Thank you!
Informative video. I had no idea that such a small amount of mud would render it inoperable. Good to know. I need to test my equipment more.
@@TavorTuner yeah, wasn't the greatest moment for the FAL. But again, many other rifles would not have survived that either...

Great video, I noticed the ejection pattern was a little week towards the end. By the way, I love the FAL.
Yep, I fiddled with the gas setting a bit too much. Now it's back to normal and runs fine
My STG58 has different ejection depending on whether the right or left side of the staggered magazine loads the next round 🤷♂️

I don't think so since the grit of the mudd got into the action/ chamber. That prevented the bolt from properly firing
Hey FAL guy, if i can ask what carrier do you use? and what are the belt you have along with it?
Plate carrier? Ferro Concepts. and belt is a bison belt (also by Ferro).
