      That's exactly my thought process as well. Before watching these videos I stuck to Zach George and positive reinforcement, and while my dogs are well behaved, they still have tendencies to be reactive, and one dog is unconfident. Just by trying the slip collar has solved a lot of issues for me in one day and has improved their lives immensely

    I have a German Shepherd and thought he was aggressive with other animals; that took me to a point where I just couldn't walk him because I felt like I wouldn't be able to control it. Now I know that he's only reactive and we're gonna fix it with some hours of work. Thanks. Love from Mexico!

    I find it amazing that there are so many pure positive trainers that would see this and faint. You gave a dog confidence and understanding in a matter of minutes. He can be calm now and enjoy being a dog. Not stress about every new person and dog. R+ trainers would take months if not years of training to get to the point you're at in one session. The dog would go through so much more discomfort than the brief corrections given here.

      SwitchingReins
      There are some decent R+ trainers out there who do everything in their power to use positive methods, but know when they’ve met their match. The trainer I’ve been working with for over 20 years finally met her match with one of my Great Danes. This Great Dane was really a handful! Usually Danes aren’t that smart. I was shocked (no pun intended) when my trainer, of all people, suggested an e-collar to work on my Dane’s recall. My Dane had a Rally Advanced title (off leash), so it wasn’t like I didn’t have any control over her at all. All other positive methods had been tried and failed. I was grateful to have someone experienced with the collar help walk me through it’s proper use. It was used at the lowest level possible to get a reaction out of her (17 out of 270). Within a few sessions my Dane’s recall greatly improved. I will never forget her saying that there’s a tool for every situation, and a situation for every tool.

    • @feralbirdie7352
      @feralbirdie7352 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jane Doe using an e-collar for recall is positive reinforcement though isn’t it? Positive does not refer to whether it’s good/bad/happy/sad or at least that was my understanding

    • @bloedjohan7602
      @bloedjohan7602 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think a light bulb just appeard on top of my head.
      I kinda was searching for an explanation and I've got it now, I reckon.
      While positive trainers use desensitization and counter conditioning with positive reinforcement to create a positive association concerning other dogs, which then leads to accepting their co-existence and being comfortable. Balanced trainers (who use "aversive" tools) just go a similar way with corrections that help with a clear communication and guidance to basically give the dog understanding and safety, which then results in trust and comfort in the situation.

    • @SwitchingReins
      @SwitchingReins 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@bloedjohan7602 yep. But the balance trainer can also use positive reinforcement to also create that positive association. That's the great thing about being balanced. You're never restricted to one way of training. You can use any humane means to train the dog.

Abused Neglected , I think he was meant for the evil dog fighting trade. Hes a sweetheart and by far the most affectionate GSD i ever owned, and I renamed him CowBoy.,from his former fighting name Gunner. He listens well, but is very insecure and a big baby. He will also hold his bladder without probing me to go out until i tell him to go out in his fenced in yard. He was caged his whole life before i took him. I think hes about 3 now. Thanks for this video, very informative and helpful, trying to build his confidence. I Love this Dog.

      I just got an 8 week old Elkhound for my 5 year olds rescue lab that was devastated when our 16 year old white lab girl died. He was good with other dogs until he got attacked by an intact male dog when I was walking him and he thought he was going to play. Ever since he was good with our white lab unless steak or chicken were around and then he would fight. He’s been so depressed the last two months without her That he wasn’t wanting to play snd he’s been super over needy so we thought another dog would help. We brought home the puppy and had him on a leash and we were shocked that he didn’t want to play he growled so we didn’t push the meeting until 3 days later when he seemed to be fairly calm. Had a muzzle on him and leash and took them both out. He seemed so excited like he was with his Sister and he was wagging and sniffing and puppy rolled over to show his belly and everything was great until puppy went to get up and made a sound and he managed to pop the collar and the muzzle off and jumped right on him. Luckily two of my kids were there and one got the puppy and the other helped me get his leash back on. That was 3 days ago and I’m so sad because we have them in different rooms and are trying to watch how to help him. Looking for a trainer here because these two dogs need each other. Would be sad if they had to always be in separate rooms. I believe it’s that he’s in fight or flight. We have had him around all kinds of other animals like pigs, guinea pigs snd rabbits and as long as we are there he’s pretty good and not over obsessed and now he’s just ignoring him when he’s in same room but he goes back to growling when puppy growls or gets near him! I’m terrified and so are my two kids that were there when he attacked and I know a big part is our fear he will hurt the puppy. Wish someone could come help me!

    I LOVED THIS VIDEO!!!! This is my dog exactly! Very reactive, very "HEY I'm here I'm big and scary" but he has no bite behind him towards people. Dogs however, while he isn't necessarily out to kill, he almost seems like he just doesn't know what appropriate interaction is with the other dog. So he nips and bites out of fear and confusion. Long story short, we've been trying to desensitized him with other dogs to correct the lack of socialization when he was a puppy. (We adopted him at 1.5years)
    How frequent would you recommend these dog meeting sessions? Well go for about 30 mins or less depending on his threshold and state. We try to replicate what you did here with Lakota, but both dogs leash, one walking circles around the other slowly decreasing the distance, then swapping the dogs to have the other circle around.

    • @ABCdogtraining802

      In my opinion.....find 1 friends dog he hates/reactive to (with a good owner who understands proper training, patience, repetition)....and every other day for only a minute or 2 starting from 50 feet, 40...wherever his tolerance is still observable as tolerance increases its threshold in TIME!! calm=REWARD, 5 feet closer, etc, dont say anything and dont move if barking/reactive...WAIT until CALM, praise, move away and give it another go! Set dog up to succeed, end with positive and play like hell/reward/throw a party...build that confidence and feed the dog while in view of the other dog after a few days or so. But, YOU must be confident in your leadership above all else...stay calm and relax ALWAYS!!!! Dont talk...yes/no/leave it/heel......#1!!!

      I would suggest teaching a "focus" and a "place" command. This way they can be in a certain safe spot and not have to worry as much about other factors going on in the house or yard. I would also suggest tightening in home training. For example, make you dog sit or go to "place" before breakfast. Make them sit before a treat. Sit before a potty break. Sit before pretty much everything. this will show your dog that everything they need and want will be given if they simply ask for permission first by following a command and focusing on you. Letting your dog get what it wants is a surefire way to get a bad mannered dog. Once you have that, Id suggest slowly exposing her to distractions and working on the same stuff..guidance from you in the form of obedience and focus. And if all that fails, try an Ecollar to work with a higher stimulation than just a boring ole treat or a chewed up toy. I hope this helps! :)

    So glad I watched this video. My 4 year old male, although he attends his weekly GSD Club Training sessions, has won various trophies at breed shows and is well behaved in the house and around the club grounds, as soon as you want to take him for a walk, he becomes extremely anxious and I'm certain it has to do with unfamiliarity as well as countless other dogs barking at him. I will definitely practice these techniques with him. Although I am aware of the methodology, sometimes as owners, when presented with a stressful/anxious situation, we don't react in the way we should even though deep down we know what to do, this video has been a stark reminder of that, be firm but kind and reward the right behavior with loads of praise and treats so he can understand right from wrong. Thank you

I’ve had a GSD before and also a Doberman Pincher, both were shelter dogs, both wonderful dogs.
