For those who are interested in reading along with the manga this episode adapted the remainder of 57 (the last 13 pages), all of chapter 58 and the majority of chapter 59 (specifically 23/32 pages). The passage of time isn't always super explicit in this arc, but the fact that the farms are harvesting their wheat crops now is meant to indicate it's now Autumn in Jutland (which is where modern-day Denmark is located), hence why Einar said he arrived in the Summer (it's been a couple months since Einar arrived at Ketil's farm). Also good eye for picking up on the implications of what Arnheid being Ketil's "personal" attendant slave entails. What's been neat about this arc's animation so far is how the focus in the character animation is now on the little details (or making scenes with numerous background characters less static) instead of action, creates distinct feel to the flow of the scenes compared to the previous season.

Yeah Thorfinn a basically a legendary warrior and he's not even 20. He could have easily killed everyone there if he wanted. But think of the personal cost to throfinn. shift the perspective a bit and his mental state makes perfect sense. At 6 he saw his dad die then he had to work with the guys who killed him in order to get a chance at a proper revenge. He's never even had a single friend or really any good thing a normal person may experience during childhood. On top of that he didn't even get his revenge instead you could argue his target died a heroes death achieving his goal while raising up his own artorius in Canute to the throne. So far he literally hasn't experienced a single good thing that didn't end in tragedy and even in his dreams he is haunted by those he killed.
What's sad about this season is how it'll probably get zero traction in the anime community as a whole. It's barely going to be action oriented, it's a slow pace, there's not many grand epic moments, it's also not a slice of life either, so no romance or chill moments. Just the depressing reality of being a slave and having PTSD. I personally think it's an amazing arc, one of the best. But I doubt most anime only watchers will agree.

Thorfinn's only goal, dream, desire, purpose in his life was killing Askeladd which he couldn't accomplish, now he has nothing to accomplish and as a wise evil douchebag man (Griffith) once said, those who don't have dreams are dead in living corpses. That's what basically Thorfinn is right now.
I actually think Einar made a smart choice, still brave but in his eyes...Thorfinn isn't strong but probably quicker than him, so out of the two of them, only he can physically hold off the kid. He was wrong and it was still brave, just don't think he was sacrificing himself.
I didn't think Thorfinn was going to fight back but I did think he was going to try the Thors but na hes not there yet way too dead inside right now lol
