There has to a man in power that sheds blood in order to achieve peace. Canute is that person. and he was forced to grow up and become this person not because he enjoys it, but because of his responsibilities and position. he himself doesnt agree with what he's doing, but he knows it has to be done. kinda like eren yeager, but canute is way better written and you'll see by the end of this arc.

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapter 72, and the first 17 pages (out of 22 total) of chapter 73.
In regards to the passage of time (which is more explicitly indicated in the manga) this episode takes place in 1018, with it specifically being September 1018 at Ketil’s farm (and since Einar arrived at Ketil’s during the early-middle Summer of 1015, it’s been a little over 3 years since he started working with Thorfinn to clear the forest).
This currently makes Thorfinn 22 years old, and Einar 23 years old.
Some trivia for this episode: the flashback scenes of Canute and Harald as kids playing are anime original additions (though Canute discussing how he and Harald used to play the ball game is in the manga).
Also the man who Canute greets as Wulf (who is one of Canute’s loyal men) is likely based on the real-life Ulf Thorgilsson, commonly known as Ulf Jarl. Who in real-life ended up becoming Canute’s brother-in-law by way of marriage to Canute’s sister Estrid (who we meet in this episode as well).
In regards to Canute’s final lines in this episode, the manga phrased it like this: “So this is it. Nothing to it.”
The way I interpreted it is that Canute is trying to convince himself (and/or while also being sarcastic to himself) that the horrible things he has to do for his goal of utopia aren’t that significant/great a weight for him. Like he’s trying to convince himself that he doesn’t feel guilty or remorse for poisoning his brother, because it’s all for the “greater good” Canute is pursuing in his ambition.

2:38 It's not as impossible as it looks. If you cut 2 or 3 trees per day then in just one year with no breaks you'll cut down 700-1000 trees. If you add into the fact that they'll only get better and better at it both from experience and their stronger physiques then clearing a large forest like that in three years is very doable.

"Those who live by the sword die by the sword" I think this bible quotes is simple but beautifully conveyed throughout vinland. Also the inescapable physiological damage I also found very interesting and how it is present in both thorfinn and canute and how both are following their fathers footsteps however it seems canute is on a downward spiral and thorfinn is on a upward journey. I feel like it would be a very interesting dynamic if they built these two character stories and had them cross paths later on inside the story, I feel like it would be a very interesting reunion between the two. I can't believe people actually had me considering dropping vinland by calling it farmland and mid. I love shounen like jojo and bleach but man this shit is so detailed in a different way and is just as good as the other series honestly. Can't wait for next week honestly

Correct me if I'm wrong or maybe the scan was translated wrong, but in the manga Harald also said something along the line of he was going to give Denmark to Canute anyway unrelated to his sickness. In addition with the extra scenes of the anime it hurts more than a dagger to Canute, therefore "this is nothing" probably implies more to how hollow and empty he really felt in his pursuit of utopia.

I absolutely love this anime. The pacing is incredible given the amount of times skips we've seen. And even with those time skips we are still able to see the growth in these characters and understand why they're growing the way they are. Not many mangas that I care to purchase but I think I'm going to buy this one.

What's interesting to me about this episode is that nothing is said about what sort of a ruler Harald was. Instead, it goes over what the brothers' relationship was like.
He could have been a saint, or he could have been a vicious warlord. It makes no difference in the end. His death was 'necessary' for Canute to achieve his ambitions.
