I mean, they made him pretty in the first season but Canute the Great was called handsome not because he was pretty but because in the eyes of his peers he was an ideal man: very tall, strong, good eyes, like a perfect warrior.
@@FkTheUFC It's been over 3 years since they watched season 1. They gotta watch a metric fuckton of anime on this channel to make money so I don't blame them for not remembering a character that appeared in a single episode lmfao.
@XXIII everything from 5:47 to the end basically, but especially like the last 4 minutes of the episode where Einar gets mad at Thorfinn. The ost when we see Canute with the choir is beautiful.
For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the last 10 pages of chapter 59, all of chapter 60, and the last scene in the episode homaged a couple pages (but didn't directly adapt) from chapter 61. Next episode is likely adapting the entirety of chapters 61-62. The story-boarder of this episode was Atsushi Kobayashi, who also boarded some of the more visually striking episodes from season 1 of Vinland Saga (and is apparently a relatively prolific animator/boarder). Though what was interesting about this episode was how there was a number of additions and changes to the content this episode adapted from chapter 60 of the manga. Some of these include stuff like additional lines of dialogue during Thorfinn and Einar's conversation with Pater (the squinty-eyed ex-slave), cutting of some internal dialogue/monologues from characters and relying more on visual storytelling to convey information. However, the most notable changes this episode had from chapter 60 of the manga was the night-time scene with Thorfinn and Einar at the end of the episode. In the manga Einar actually stops himself from trying to choke Thorfinn before he even lays a hand on Thorfinn (with Einar instead internally thinking the "it's not as though he [Thorfinn] was responsible for killing my family..." line to himself), the manga chapter also didn't give us a peek of what Thorfinn was dreaming about (so no trippy dream sequence). The scene after Einar woke Thorfinn up also differed as well, with the manga focusing on Einar realizing Thorfinn is extremely not used to being treated kindly by others (hence why Thorfinn had no response to Pater's earlier kindness and why Thorfinn asks why Einar wakes him up from his nightmares), and then Einar declaring that he and Thorfinn are friends now (the chapter ending with a small comedic moment of Thorfinn asking "what does that mean" in a nonplussed manner). The anime's decision to instead emphasize Einar's rage more and connect his rebuke of Thorfinn's despairing pessimism back to the lesson/philosophy of Einar's mother was an interesting creative choice. I'm not sure which version I prefer personally, but based on the Twitter of Makoto Yukimura (the mangaka of Vinland Saga) it appears to be a change he is okay with. And that was indeed Canute at the end of the episode, he's just grown out of his feminine boyish looks over the course of the last 1+ years. For those who are curious, in this series Thorfinn was born on February 3rd 996 (while the real-life Thorfinn Karlsefni, the character is based on, is estimated to have been born circa 980-985). And it being September of 1015 during the events of this episode, means Thorfinn is well his way into his 19th year. Also if Lupa wants to be a little more accurate, he should be saying "last time on Denmark" instead of "last time on Norway" for the intros.
@@axlorg89 Whether or not he was technically choking Thorfinn or not is kinda beside my point, which is that it was different from how it was depicted in the manga, where Einar stopped himself before he even tried to reach out and choke Thorfinn.
@@TheoVorster I think the scene gains a bit more in gravity in the anime. Also thanks to the insane quality of the animation. I love how they went with an intimist style for this season. Works really well with the point being made.
Thorfinn and Einar are very close in age. Thorfinn was still a child when he was raiding villages with Askeladd. Einar was on the opposite end at a very similar age. Thors leaving Iceland probably kept Thorfinn from suffering Einar’s fate (Floki threatened to flatten their village if Thors refused)
Scene was so intense even the crickets stopped chirping. The dialogues and facial expressions and the character motions was amazing, this episode is beautifully done.
I don’t know if y’all noticed, but Thorfinn‘s dream sequence when he was slicing those men down was the exact sequence from season one when ashklad told him to get the generals head and they did that cool pov sequence
Roshi's attention to detail is amazing. Yes, the very detailed hands is a conscious choice specifically for that reason. Yukimura said in one of the volume anecdotes that showing detailed rugged hands tells more about the person's hard work than his face
Idk if y’all realized Thorfinn has been having Night terrors every night. That’s why we heard him screaming last episode and Einar went to wake him up. He’s severely haunted by the trauma of everything he did as a warrior.
I remember having a nightmare because of this episode, but not because of Thorfinn, but because of that damn cricket that wouldn’t shut up in my dreams
People who say this arc is boring are the ones that didn't get what this story was about from the beginning. It was never about the fights and war and action. It was always about Thorfinn and his journey as a person, learning and growing.
Thorfinn and Einar are kinda similar. After the death of his dad he was so consumed with hatred and vengeance that he himself turned into a killer same thing almost happened with Einar
Reminds me of Tyson in a way and others before him. I always pondered what the price of being a warrior is mentally and how they cope with it once it’s gone. Especially when it was a majority of their identity and now a whole part of them just left. It’s like the world moved on without them and they’re just now learning about themselves in other ways.
One thing omitted from the manga is that when Thorfinn reacted to Snake he says internally that Snake is just as good or equal in terms of strength to Askeladd which is why he had such a reaction to it.
A thought I had, Thorfinn has been at war since 5-6 we're lucky he has an off switch on the kill button because he's a LITERAL child weapon. Thinking this man really knows what "thank you" means I'm pretty sure he hasn't said "thank you" for more than 13 years. Also when he says "nothing good has happened to me my entire life," I know Einar doesn't know this but this man has spent more of his life at war than he's known peace, I'm pretty sure conventional happiness in his soul has been dead for a long time. Other notes, the nightmare Thorfinn had was featuring the same way he killed people throughout the series. the group of people he ran through killing and the last decapitation that featured the old woman who took him in and hid him for a short time, was the scene where the Thorfinn took the head of that general when we see him earn his first duel with Askeladd, when he chopped his head off and the head fell off the wall into the water (after the boat scene where they're running it down the hills). There is a great deal of attention being paid to everything here because you can also technically look at that old woman dying being the true death of the last shred of innocence that Thorfinn had.
Thorfinn said thank you in episode 2 when they brought them his food I just think Thorfinn in the moment was in thought and still contemplating wanting to be alive and what that means for him
His rage was foreshadowed in the first episode when the Vikings were dragging him away. He now finds the representation of his trauma in Thorfinn and wants to unleash that rage on him. But he's mature enough to understand that Thorfinn hasn't done anything to him. Killing Thorfinn wouldn't make him any better
In case y'all don't remember, the fight in Thorfinn's nightmare was the same fight in season 1 when he beheaded the French captain. The woman that the French captain turned into was the woman that cared for and harbored Thorfinn before he and Askeladd's crew burned and raided their village.
Thorkell would have finished that forest in a week but am I weird for wanting a bit more focus on Thorfinn scenes before getting into Canute/Thorkell war stuff?
Nah, that's what I thought too when reading the manga, but it is what it is. Slight spoiler We get a lil more Thorfinn development before he reunites with Canute so it's all good
@@playswithsquirrels4630 yeah it’s not a bad thing or anything and I know I’m going to enjoy what comes next I was just invested in Thorfinns development so far

Anybody realize that scene of thorfinn cutting down the line of soldiers is the same scene from s1 when askeladd had him take the opp’s general’s head for a duel? (Sorry if that’s hard to follow. Was trying to keep it short and sweet)
We have to remember the root of Einer thinking this way. After Einer’s village was destroyed, her mother basically told him “if you are alive then you haven’t loose”
I think many people didn't notice this, but remember that Thorfinn didn't thank his master for the shirt? But he thanked Einar later on? That's why Einar was a bit surprised
