This is my headcanon for the beastmaster perk now. Steeve is the soul of a glyphid grunt that once befriended the dwarves (of his own will) and the beastmaster perk allows him to possess a new vessel.
And then there will be a heart wrenching plot twist where Steve sacrifices itself for Karl to save him after they get swarmed at a drop pod that Karl had just repaired

The part at the end of gunner petting the dead steeve just gives me the vibes of comforting a loving pet in their final moments. Like those emotional videos of old animals on their deathbed just being loved and happy before they go. It goes along with this theory of steeve being the ghost of a tamed glyphid, who probably died being loved and supported a dwarf after defending them. Who got to be loved besides being part of the glyphid hivemind and developed such a strong love he can influence any glyphid that gets love like he did to protect the dwarves who made him feel loved. It shouldn't make me cry but it is, Thank you Steeve!

My favorite thing is having Beast Master and Iron Will. I normally play defensively and just try to protect my teammates as much as possible, so Steeve does too. So when I get to pop Iron Will with Steeve it's a rush, and when I go down again Steeve protects me until my teammates revive me.
