When my dad passed. The makeup person did a great job. But the best thing was they put a closed lip smile on Daddy's face. My brother and I saw him at the viewing and my brother goes. Dad looks like he just told a dirty joke. Well that got me tickled and I was laughing and crying at the same time. People were staring but I didn't care. Funerals are for families and if I want to express my grief with laughter its ok

When my aunt died, my great aunt kept cracking jokes about how the funeral home director pronounced “diabetes” (my aunt died from complications due to diabetes) and of course, we laughed and cried and we got stares too but we always said this is what my aunt wanted. She never wanted us to cry and hurt, she always wanted us to laugh. So that’s what I say to you, your father would’ve wanted you to laugh instead of cry. ☺️

My dad worked at the mortuary that ended up embalming and doing his funeral. So we knew they’d do a good job. But we kids actually, for my dad’s funeral, decided we wanted to remember him how he was. My dad was a funny guy who would transport a lot of the bodies to the mortuary in body bags. Sometimes if we were visiting and rode with him, we would go through a drive-thru for lunch and he would ask what I wanted to order and turn around and say, “excuse me, sir? Would you care for some lunch?” Or something like that just to make us smile. He did love that job.

My mother was a beautician, the funeral home would call her to do the hair on her clients when they passed away. I remember peeking in and watching her do the hair on an elderly lady. I asked how she could stand to do that. Her reply has always stuck with me. She said, 'It's not the dead who will hurt you, it's the living you have to watch out for.'

When my grandmother did her makeup, she would always smudge her mascara because she had tremors. So when she passed, the person who did her makeup must have smudged it on accident. It was very comforting to see.

    • @bleebleeblahblah

Exactly, I couldn't agree more. My aunt passed and when I went to the viewing she had her hair parted on the side. Parted was not the word, It was a comb over.( For those that don't know, it's a style mostly used by balding men to hide a balding spot. Men try to hide the balding, by taking the hair from the non-balding side and 'combing it over' to the other side, hopefully hiding the bald spot).
It was attrouscious (sorry for the spelling) and it took away from the bereavement process and prolonged the closure of her being gone. I couldn't help but think why did her sons let her get buried looking like a totally different person. Everytime I thought of her, that comb over came back to my mind and intertwined with the good memories of her.
Please don't let your loved ones be buried looking different than what they looked like in real life. thank you. and, sorry for long comment.

Why did you get emotional because it was on wrong side?

    • @andinarizkia
      @andinarizkia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +260

@@Cognitoman people want to go to viewing remembering the person as how they remember them when they're still alive.
Little signatures like always combing the hair to one side became an endearing memory of the person, hence if it's done wrong, it can give an "unfamiliar" look to the person.
People want to say goodbye to the person they know, not the person they don't know; this includes how they dress, how they do their makeups, what type of color they usually cater to, styling quirks (wearing a LOT of rings, parting hair, faux beauty marks, etc etc), because at the end of the day we know someone not just due to their faces, but also their personality and choices.

I'm really frustrated that these two women care so much. I wish I could have worked with them. So many people are NOT like them. I had to fight to be involved in the process of my son's death. My son had cuts on his face from the breathing equipment in ICU. The Care Center first made him completely tan face. My son was always pale due to his heart defects. We had them remove the makeup and make him look more pale, like normal. They never covered the cuts and I got judged from family members like it was MY fault. I wish more people would allow parents/family members to be involved in the death process. I would have been with my son through EVERYTHING if I would have been allowed.
People in this line of work need to understand that we can't get these moments back. It's so upsetting.

I am so sorry for your terrible loss, and that your grief was compounded by what happened. It is the worst thing to lose a loved one, and more so, a child. I have not had that trauma in my life, but having been with beloved ones, during their final moments, and after, I know how difficult it is to have anything that went wrong keep playing in your head, which can seriously impede the journey through grief. I do not have anything that can help, but can only say my heart goes out to you and yours. (I basically tell my brain to STFU, when it wants to replay the negative crap it plays around a death, and make it focus toward the full and best life I shared with the beloved. Doesn't always work, but is something I do. Just an aside.)

My grandma was 79 when she was hit & killed instantly by a car while crossing the street to check her mail (she was 79, but still drove, went shopping, went to church, etc. on her own whenever we weren’t around) in Feb. 2015. At her funeral, they had to reconstruct her arms & torso area under her clothes because all of those bones were severely broken. My grandma was 5 feet, maybe 80-90 pounds & she was struck at about 65-70 mph. So her body flew over a 100 ft. It still hurts so much to think about it & that someone so full of life would have to go out that way. Her face had so much makeup on it to cover the bruising and everything from being hit. She looked beautiful & like a movie star, but my grandma never wore makeup other than lipstick so seeing her with foundation on was different, but I'm very grateful to be able to remember her looking like a movie star. The only thing I regret is I was in cosmetology school during this time & my grandma had been waiting for me to get out of the classroom part to the floor to start taking clients. She was so excited to be my first perm. I never got a chance to give her that perm. Sometimes I regret not offering to do her hair for the funeral. I'm so sorry Grandma. I miss you so much & I hope I get to give you that perm in heaven one day.

When my abuela passed, I think it really helped my mom with grieving to be involved with how my abuela's makeup looked. My abuela also had her hairdresser, who she went to atleast once a week, do her hair for free. I will always remember how at med school when we had to take part in a few forensic pathology dissections, after our last practical the pathologist said "I hope I'll never see any of you on my table. I was an ICU nurse for 12 years in a public hospital, one of the charge nurses for 10 of those years. A nursing preceptor I had become good friends with worked there, too, and always told her group as they left on their last day not to be her patient. It made me chuckle a little the first time I heard it since I seemed to have gotten all the morose and sombre preceptors where I went to school. I also wish she had given me the same blessing as I did end up her patient there. Anyway, it is definitely a "take care, stay safe" kinda thing.

Oh, I loved this video so much!! It reminded me of a chapter from one of my favorite manga series, "The Embalmer", about a goth girl who was obsessed with the idea of dying because she thought being embalmed would allow her to be beautiful forever. She snuck into an open casket viewing, and was disgusted when she saw the deceased wasn't wearing any makeup and just looked "normal". The titular embalmer explained to her that his job wasn't to make corpses "beautiful'- it was to make them look like their loved ones remembered, using makeup to make them look au natural if they didn't wear makeup when they were alive, or even painting on wrinkles and discoloration because "To the family, even the faults are dear".

She not only didn't look dead, but she looked beautiful and that wasn't a word that I had ever thought to describe her previously. The last time I saw her in full makeup was probably when I was in Jr. High in the mid 70's. But now my last memory of her was seeing her at her viewing and she was beautiful. I am still in awe on the work they did on her. Kudo's to Mulkey Mason in Denton, Texas for an absolute A+++ job.

Thank you so much for sharing this info. My granddad's mouth had a stretched expression that looked like a weird smile, and his skin was orange. We were left thinking this was the work of a dodgy mortician, who had maybe sewn the mouth together funny in an attempt to hide ageing or distress - and had maybe applied foundation in too dark a shade. To realise now that these were more likely natural effects of dying, and more so an absence of rejuvenating techniques rather than a botched job, is really really comforting.

Turquoise Cheetah that’s actually partially how I would like to be buried. Here are 2 ways I would like to be buried:
      1) be cremated into ashes and have the ashes of me be planted as nutrients for a tree in a dying forest or maybe in a close family member’s yard.
      2) be buried in a biodegradable coffin ( like a fancy cardboard box ) and be wrapped in linen, with a headstone so in case someone encounters my dead body for some reason, it wouldn’t be suspected as a murder.

My mom never wore make up, and I remember laughing my ass off when I saw her with pink lipstick, blue eyeshadow and eye liner in the casket, right before the funeral.
I had baby wipes in my bag, and wiped the whole thing off.
People who were gathering at the chapel, thought I’ve lost my mind because I was laughing and crying, while wiping the make up of my moms face.
I kept laughing throughout the funeral because I couldn’t get the images out of my mind. One of the things that made the funeral a little more bearable.

I found this fascinating. When I clicked, I never thought it would remind me of anyone. But as I watched, I got a glimpse into just how they made my sister look so amazing. She’d been terminally ill since, well, 2 days old, but she made it to 26yo. And she had survived one of the worst cases of infant jaundice ever recorded, so she was yellow her entire life. Her face was distorted from wearing a heavy, rigid ventilator mask 24/7 for 13 years and she had a large benign tumor in her cheek from the mask as well. But at the funeral she looked stunning. Her face was softened, the jaundice appearance was nearly gone, even the tumor looked half its size. The mortician had even styled her curls to look thicker than they were and she put on a small tiara for our princess. I hadn’t been happy to hear her mom had gone for open casket but she looked amazing and I couldn’t be more grateful. To the pros out there, what you do helps heal the grieving. Thank you.

She wants me to do her makeup for her funeral and It was a really tough thing to think about since she's only 65 but it's a reality ill eventually have to come to terms with when she passes away. I had the blessing to fulfill my friends final wishes before she passed.
I’m not a cosmological mortician. Just a regular cosmetologist.
Needless to say I was Scared. I was sad ...and scared. After a half hour of jitters, I finally went into the room where she lay. She had already been dressed and a peace came over me.
I prayed for her and myself to be able to get through this, to guide me and do what she would of liked.
Her words, “ I want to look like a beautiful doll! I not felt like doing my hair or makeup for years. So just make me beautiful.”
I curled her hair in a gentle forward style, so that her hair looked fuller.
And because I’d not seen her makeup Ever, I used soft pinks and browns. I also lightly gave eyebrows;which were very sparse.
I would have to say that was the most difficult part. Not making them look “make-uped” , just a natural gray. I then applied a soft pink with just a hint of gloss. So it looked like she had just licked her lips.
I then did her hands. Thinking back, I wish I would have polished her nails a light pink.
I was so calm! And was shockingly aware of it. Even to myself.
It was an honor to do this for her. And her friends, husband and children hugged me with gratitude that she, “ Looked natural and beautiful!”
I’m unsure if I’ll ever do this again. But it’s an experience I will never forget.
Thank you for your videos that helped me immensely.

You were able to do one last kindness to a great friend. And in doing so you discovered something that we, as a society has lost with the mechanisation and commercialisation of death. Years ago we would have laid out and dressed people at home as part of the mourning process. I think it’s very healthy and important to be able to do this one last service to our family and friends. And yes, regardless of religious beliefs it is a very spiritualised moment you’ll always remember.

I kept seeing Caitlin moving juuuuuust slightly since she's, you know, not actually dead. All I could think was that if I was Monica it would have been FREAKING ME THE HELL OUT, like, she must be so used to working with perfectly still bodies and now she can see twitching out of the corner of her eye lol.
But to be serious for a moment (mood whiplash ahoy)
It's really heartening to see two people so committed to respecting the family and the deceased. It's been a while since my grandma passed, but I still remember very clearly being made so comfortable by the knowledge that the people looking after her knew her and would take good care of her. She had lived in the same small town all her life, and thefuneral director knew her well. He had also worked with her on my grandpa a few years prior. Her hair was styled by the same lady who had done it for her weekly for years. I think there's a natural human reaction right after someone passes to not want to leave them and let them go to be prepared, at least I felt like that. She was gone but only just, still looked and felt very much like her, and it was almost a "don't take my grandma away" kind of reaction that hit me very strongly, even more so than when we left her in the coffin to be buried. Embalming can seem really scary, even when you know what's involved, because it's one of the first major moments after death when you're entrusting your loved one to someone else. It means the world to be able to think, "okay, I have to let them take her BUT I know that they're going to take good care of her." Major, major props two you two and to anyone else in the funeral industry who understands how much the bereaved still think of the deceased as a person and who respect that, I can't even begin to tell you the difference it makes. Yikes, I'm tearing up writing this, and I haven't cried over my grandma's death in years. But it's kind of a good cry, you know? A relief at remembering that the painful bits were mixed in with love and kindness.

The thing that everybody notices about dead bodies is how still they are - no human alive is that still. Military snipers at their best are not as "motionless" as an actual corpse. Even little kids sense it immediately and are disturbed. Humans are not meant to be totally motionless, even while sleeping.

When my uncle died of drowning, he didn't by all means smell any different (by that I mean he didn't stink of death. More so he smelled so much like fresh water with a tinge of lavender). No sign of discoloration in his skin whatsoever and his hair was absolutely so fluffy.
He didn't get embalmed because that was not how we prepare a dead body and was just laying in a retractable bed in the living room. I remember passing by that room thinking he was just asleep because he was still as pinkish and still looked a bit alive with a bit of shine glistened on his cheeks.
Her mother self isolated herself in the praying room, at peace and wishing her son's spirit a safe journey to wherever he wished he would head to, though she cried silently for the last time during the second day.
By the third day, my grandfather's brothers had arrived and prepared my uncle for a shower.
After cleaning him from head to toe, trimming his nails and a bit of his hair, they've had wrapped him in a white cotton/silk fabric and placed him once more in the retractable bed. By the fourth day, they've had prepared his burial grounds with his feet supposedly facing the sun. Six feet from the ground, they made a bed at the side with the dirt they've had dugged the grave from and had him facing his left side before shutting that side with the excess fabric wrapped around his body and was secured with a few sticks that were pierced on the soil.
The brothers recited a verse from the holy book and finally had gently thrown back the dirt to seal the grave.
The crowd slowly made their way back to the entrance of the forest cemetary and I asked to be left behind..
I had no idea why I had the sudden urge to cut one of rose branches near his grave and stuck it in the dirt.. After a month I came back to expect a silent empty grave, but was greeted by a rose garden instead.
His grave smelt so much of fresh roses and everything was green, and I bet he'd have loved that.
Two months pass and the only issue I've had within the people in the cemetary was they were disrespectful. They left trash pieces behind and crumpled the specific path of grass that I planted..
With complete rage, I prayed for the rose bushes to grow furiously instead, and it did. It created a barrier that had made people stay away from his grave to leave it in pristine condition.

So he was able to go down on the prednisone which is good and he always tells others that have rheumatoid arthritis to check to see if they might have gout.
