I think in your case, it was less about bringing a corpse to work, and more that you dressed it like Borat and you tried to, how should I put it, "'Weekend at Bernie's' the corpse" around the office. Corpse Stew is okay. Puppeteering a dead body in a lime green mankini is not. And, no, calling it "Mr. Cryptkeeper" did not make it better.
My grandmother is going to go to a body farm when she dies. The paperwork has already been done years ago. She's a teacher and likes the idea of continuing to teach after life.
I asked my kids to do that for me when I die, but if they don't feel they can they don't have to and can just have me cremated and do what they want with the ashes.
Good on her! My grandma wanted that, too, but she passed away at the height of COVID and no one would take her. So I'm going to donate my body for her. I'd been considering it anyway, but that clinched it.

Hi Caitlin Not sure you will read this but my husband and I lost our old dog Max recently and rather than have his body rushed away by the vets, we took it home for a day and washed him, brushed him and sat with him. In essence, we had an undisturbed dog body in our home for a wake and as odd as it sounds, I think it helped a lot with the grieving. Life long Franklin Tn resident here!! I remember when this happened SO WELL! It’s actually what peaked my obsession with Forensic Pathology. I adore Dr. Bass. He’s a Tennessee treasure! Keep up the great work! Sending love from this proud Patreon supporter!
My dad was friends with famed sculptor Frank Bender who pioneered facial recreation based on skin depth measurements by race and gender. He would literally sculpt with clay over a victim's skull which would then be shown on the news attempting to identify a victim. I'll never forget the day we went to Frank's unannounced. After a long wait for him to come to the door, Frank seemed unusually anxious about our arrival though we visited often and had seen many of his sculptures in progress. As Dad and I descended into his studio, Frank suggested that we should all go to the coffeeshop around the corner rather than hang out there today. He had a big kettle on the stove which I could see boiling as we looked down from the stairs. Dad didnt see the need if Frank was cooking. It was at this point Frank insisted we head to the coffeeshop turning off the stove and grabbing his jacket because we had caught him on a day he was "boiling the skulls".
Frank Bender was incredibly talented! I've seen way to many sculptures and police drawings that are........not great😅 but especially his work in the List murders is spectacular as the killer was still alive and 20+ years older then the last known photo of him.
I LOVE this video. I never knew the history of the body farms, and I love how Dr. Bass didn't just admit his mistake, he embraced it and did everything he could to learn from it. A bit of humility we could all learn from.

Love the work that Dr Bill Bass has done on the study of decomposition. His "body farm" has advanced post death science more than anything else. His "Jefferson Bass" novels are really good too.
Yes! This is the longest January I've ever seen. Jam packed with crap from brutal cold (here in Dixie) then a swing into the 70s triggering migraines I haven't had in 20 yrs. Here's hoping February isn't also 87 weeks long.
My dad was a collector of roadkill critters for bone art purposes. My mom banned indoor bone boiling as a condition of their relationship so he had to take it outside, but in the end he settled on paintcans with holes punched in them/hardware cloth buried in the yard for a summer and that worked well too.
I’ll never forget being in a FA class, watching a video of the Body Farm where Dr Bass is walking around and he comes across a skull that he gently kicks out of his way. It’s the funniest thing, if you know his sense of humour.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Bass at one of his book signings when I was a teenager. It's so surreal to be hearing a story about him now! (Also I'm cracking up over the "he ain't goin' nowhere!" comment, big mood)

So I realize you’ve been on here way longer than me, but I’ve been dealing with demonetization since day one. I can’t even find your Marchioness video AT ALL, so that’s a new one, but one thing I have noticed is that recent events basically never get through. I’ve had pretty good luck with stuff from the 1930s or earlier but nothing from the 1980s forward has ever gotten through, and mine is just a history channel. It makes it hard to even get started because literally every video of mine that is popular is demonetized. It is so soul crushing. I seriously doubt you remember but I met you when you spoke in Springfield, Missouri, about three years ago, and I told you about my channel. I probably only had triple digit subs then. I have 30,000 now but basically no income, which is sad because I think I make quality stuff. Your channel has probably been my biggest inspiration, and it truly isn’t right that meticulously researched and intelligent content gets targeted. Quality documentaries should be off limits. How is our work not art? If a music video with super inappropriate stuff gets through as “art” why not valid academic stuff? Learning history and science is important and shouldn’t be attacked the way it is on TH-cam.
I got my anthropology degree at UT and everyone in Knoxville has a Dr. Bass story. He was a regular customer at the restaurant I worked at and when I got rejected from grad school he offered to call the university I applied to and chew them out. At 95 he was still just as sharp as he had ever been, and his wife is one of the nicest ladies I’ve ever met. This is absolutely off topic but anytime I hear about Dr. Bass I have to talk about how sweet he is. Also, the crockpots are absolutely in use at the body farm with a little bit of meat tenderizer for good measure. I have personally used them and we just get used to the weirdness.
Thank you for sharing one of my favorite stories about Dr. Bill Bass. The other one being that someone, can't remember where they were an agent, suggested he donate his name to that body farm's official name making it the Bass Anthropological Research Facility, or BARF for short.
I just yelled YAY aloud in my empty house, because I was recommended this video so soon after it's been posted 😅 Hurrah for historical mortician based content.
You are beyond hilarious! I've been watching for several years, and even introduced my husband to your videos when we first met. He's now a fan, too. Much love!
I worked at Hillcres Memorial Cemetery in Jackson, Michigan. The stories I could tell you, from illegally spread ashes, disinternment, a smelly mausoleum, the famous Little Mary... and so much more.
The ‘boiling heads in a pot on the family stove’ segment reminded me of my university professor on abattoirs who admitted doing just that except with cow skulls. Full grown, adult, cow skulls. Repeatedly. Apparently he’s barred from doing it but ‘what his wife doesn’t know won’t hurt her’. She also worked for the university and apparently the first thing everyone does when meeting her is ask how she put with him for so long.
There you are, Ms. Caitlin! I've been looking forward to this. Curious as to what you'll be teaching today. Fun fact, there are 2 unknown Union soldiers buried on this property because the town that used to be here wouldn't allow them be interred in the segregated cemetery next door. So, yes. I have a 2 Civil War cemeteries in my backyard.
Thank you Dr. Bill Bass and the Body Farm. And thank you, Caitlin, for your respectful and fascinating discussions of death, its history, and traditions around it.
OMG the patreon credits, lol! Truly this was fascinating and really awesome too. Someone who made a mistake set about making sure that no one else would make that mistake and also further forensic analysis in the process.
I quite literally cheered out loud when I saw this upload! As an anthropology student, I've been a huge admirer of Dr Bass for many years, and I absolutely love sharing this specific story of his! It intersects perfectly with my interest in Civil War history as well 😅 Truly, though, Dr Bass is an incredible researcher and investigator! If you enjoy this topic, I can HIGHLY recommend both of his memoirs, "Death's Acre" and "Beyond the Body Farm". He tells so many fascinating stories about his research and assistance in solving cases, as well as all of the research he inspired in his students and how it's expanded the field of forensic anthropology. Caitlin did a wonderful job sharing this story, and I'm so glad that there's now an intersection of my two favorite death educators! This video was honestly the perfect way to end my day 🥰

Been home all week sick. A headless corpse in a cival war grave was exactly what I needed as a pick me up. Thank you, Caitlin! ❤
Whatever works for you. Hope you feel better soon!
😂😂😂 What a GREAT story!
This is amazing. I read it outloud to my husband and he made a noise to express he did not share my enthusiasm.
@@AuDHD_Mom Username is golden 🏆
Priceless.
Frank Bender was incredibly talented! I've seen way to many sculptures and police drawings that are........not great😅 but especially his work in the List murders is spectacular as the killer was still alive and 20+ years older then the last known photo of him.
I love how you turned this story about a major failure in forensics into a major win for science and a redeemed Dr Bass.
The Dr is 1000% the poster boy for learning from your mistakes.
I LOVE this video. I never knew the history of the body farms, and I love how Dr. Bass didn't just admit his mistake, he embraced it and did everything he could to learn from it. A bit of humility we could all learn from.
A mortician with a delightful sense of humor. You truly are a treasure
I knew about The Body Farm, but I didn’t know anything about Mr. Bass, thank you for sharing their origin story!!!
In the spirit of mistakes becoming the catalyst for something wonderful and new, I’d just like to share my favorite quote; “Failure is always an option!” -Adam Savage
Colonel Angus from SNL would be proud, and so would Rue McClanahan as, from her interviews I've seen, she had a sense of humor that would match nicely with Caitlin's.
I’m from Tennessee and my grandfather donated his body to the Body Farm before I was even born. Now, 31 years later, I’m learning more about it thanks to being a death enthusiast! Thanks Caitlin 🙏🏻
I've been missing your videos!!! There is no reason they should be demonetizing you. Your content is fantastic, informative and covers so many questions people have. Keep doing you and we will keep following, liking and commenting!
Right? Who else will talk about this stuff with both humor and tact?
It's educational and less graphic than half of the stuff on major news channels.
Thanks for reminding me how much I miss the music of the 80s, Kaitlyn. I would recognize a fellow Robert Smith fan anywhere!
Love the work that Dr Bill Bass has done on the study of decomposition. His "body farm" has advanced post death science more than anything else. His "Jefferson Bass" novels are really good too.
I read a while ago that pigs have been studied underwater while they are picked apart.
It was a complete surprise for me. I knew about the Body Farm, but not who the founder was. Cool.
Beautiful close out to this January that’s been 87 weeks long 🖤
Yes! This is the longest January I've ever seen. Jam packed with crap from brutal cold (here in Dixie) then a swing into the 70s triggering migraines I haven't had in 20 yrs. Here's hoping February isn't also 87 weeks long.
January was a rough year.
Are you kidding??? I learn so much from this channel. It's the BEST!!!!
The humour, the body horror, the educational content I never knew I needed. I adore Caitlin. 😂
This video is perfection. What a crazy, fascinating story! And then the song... I'm dead, it was too good. 👏🏻👏🏻
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Bass at one of his book signings when I was a teenager. It's so surreal to be hearing a story about him now!
(Also I'm cracking up over the "he ain't goin' nowhere!" comment, big mood)
Well, TH-cam might not have notified me, but Caitlin’s work definitely raised my spirits talk about bringing the dead to life in the best way possible! Keep it up, Caitlin! ✨😍
Amazing Dr. Bass had no side effects of arsenic poisoning!
take notes fellow deathlings, this will be on the practical "hide a body near caitlin" exam!
Caitlin I just want to tell you: I love your work. Not only are you a funeral home director, making peoples passing to the afterlife as easy as it can be, but you are also an author (I love your book) you’re funny, and you make these amazing documentaries for us to watch that I can’t even believe these are free because of the quality. You’re a bright spot in these difficult times for me.
Never stop doing what you’re doing we all love these documentaries. ❤
I ñeed to read this book!!! Title please?
@@PattyHamilton-ph3ik she has three
Smoke gets in your eyes in an autobiography, it’s really great, would recommend, and the one I talked about. and the second one is called from here to eternity, it’s about how different cultures around the world celebrate and mourn death, and the third is called: will my cat eat my eyeballs when I die, which is a sort of q and a book answering questions from young kids each chapter, one of the questions being, will my cat eat my eyeballs when I die. Very fun read.
She has written 3 books and I love them all!
Smoke gets in your eyes,, From Here to Eternity, and Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? Think another is coming soon. @PattyHamilton-ph3ik
As a Civil War guy and a Deathling I really enjoyed this video. The Civil War is such a DEEP well when it comes to death related topics. I really enjoyed the video about the Hunley as well!
Well done young lady. A very informative and humorous video. Many Kudos to Dr Bass for taking a mistake, realizing there was zero research on the subject and making a breakthrough on it.
That's a real scientist!
Wow, Caitlyn has a weird audience. Dark humor, morbid curiosity...I feel like I'm finally home.🌕
I was just talking about the Body Farm with my boyfriend the other day. He looked at me like I was crazy to know that a university had such a thing.
you're not crazy! simply informed. and if we do go there, i see nothing bad about being a bit cooky
Not married, eh? There is still time...change him, change boyfriends. Either one,lol
My spouse didn't believe me when I said one of the things that can happen when you donate your body is scientists letting it rot. 😂
Being from Knoxville - and an avid fan of Bones (the TV show) since being a kid - I read his book about the body farm in middle school. So fascinating, and it made me proud to be from Tennessee. Hard to do these days! Forever thankful for his work.
Well this started out as a fascinating corpse mystery and then took a sharp U-turn in to the educational and inspired!
Also, thank you for the corpse disposal tip, as an Englishman their aren't many civil war graves near me sadly.
Get some Halloween type tombstones and say they're for your deceased pets or something. You watch Caitlin's videos, so I know you have to be a creative type.
There got to be-just not from the civil war you had with the American Colonies🙂
Of course you have Civil War graves, they just older and I doubt they have arsenic embalmed corpses in them.
That was a rebellion.
Any English grave from the 1640s could be a civil war grave...
I love Caitlin. I'm so glad she's back. Absolute stellar timing 🙌🫶😁 This is one of my favorite ways to do my self care. It's so relaxing settling in & binging episodes. It's so peaceful. & trust & believe I need some peaceful quiet time as of late lol 🫀🧘♀️🤸♀️
Yesssss. My Friday just got better
AGREED
Very “Flight of the Conchords”-esque song at the end. Funny since I’ve been thinking about them lately and how I miss them. Great vid!
We get so many examples of people who double down on mistakes. I love how Bass instead became determined to bring good out of it. So much good and thoughtful research
Good to see you back, great video!
Ilu queen. Welcome back during this period of extreme stress and uncertainty. Hearing your voice actually did make me feel a bit better though, so thank you
So good to hear you again! Thank you
I had the honor of getting to meet Dr. Bass at LMU when I was 19! He is absolutely a wonderful person to speak with.
Oooo, sit down for lunch and a new Caitlin video has dropped? What a treat!
This one might not be lunch-compatible for everyone.
Same!! Was waiting for my burrito bowl when I got the notif
I hope you enjoyed your lunch 😂 I was pretty glad I wasn't eating during this one 😂
Hope it wasnt a boiled chicken lunch
Same! 🎉❤
My favorite Queen of Death has returned! I enjoy learning from you! Thank you for what you do!
"Doughty Has Risen From The Grave!" (rated PG-13, for sass, snark, and information)
Thank you for sharing one of my favorite stories about Dr. Bill Bass. The other one being that someone, can't remember where they were an agent, suggested he donate his name to that body farm's official name making it the Bass Anthropological Research Facility, or BARF for short.
The twists! The turns! The SVU references! This video has everything👏👏👏
I'm almost afraid to ask but...who's Little Mary?
Tell us about little mary!!!
I’m very intrigued 👀
Do tell
@@gothicavictoria1341I looked it up. I wish I hadn’t. I was already prone to claustrophobia. Silly me.
Caitlin, thanks for the FRESH video! 🤣
Also thanks for your collab with Mike in the Morro Castle video! Really enjoyed 2 beloved youtubers together!
Yay! Caitlin is back!
Yes. We all love Caitlin. She makes the subject fun and interesting.
Thrilled to have received this notification. I do so look forward to these. Thanks so very much!
the ending! 🤣😂 this is why I love your channel so much! as well as thoroughly researched material and excellent presentation. thankyou so much!
I cannot be the only one who got overly excited to see Caitlin posted a new video! I skipped a work meeting to watch this. Well done!
I'm sure you didn't miss anything
Was thinking about this channel yesterday and to get my fix, I rewatched some episodes. Then.. lo and behold.. a fresh video today! Hooray!
Cool.
This video was honestly the perfect way to end my day 🥰
less than half way through the video and instead of being freaked out im like "woa someone got killed during a civil war reeinactment? just like in that episode of psych?"
C’mon son!! 😂 that’s one of my favorite episodes next to the Dual Spires episode 😂
