  • Grandmaster Ben Finegold spends a short time on many games where a player blundered and lost several moves later. See if you can solve these mate problems faster than the class. You must be at least four years old to answer!

    I used to play chess a long time ago and fell out of it for some reason. Watching Ben Finegold has got me interested in it again :) I got a chess app a week ago in hopes of rekindling my love of the game and looked up offensive openings to give me the spark I was looking for. I bounced around several lecturers on TH-cam and almost called it quits until I found Ben Finegold. With a personality like that, it's hard to watch any other lecturer on chess! I always lose interest after a couple mins but I can watch Ben for hours. What a guy!

      If you're starting chess again,I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with tactics first if you're looking for really sharp openings since it would require a really large amount of calculation.There's a grandmaster in this channel I'd recommend for that.Look up GM Alejandro Ramirez
      and his video Tactics Training Session.
      The tactics there are absolutely gorgeous and you'd learn a lot.That is if you're really willing to go back to chess.

    at 14:31 black can just play knight f6 and block that attack almost entirely? Am I missing something with that move? Why would black play pawn h6 over knight f6? Thank you if anyone sees something that I don't.

    At 1:41 Ben doesn't go into black's other losing variant:
    1. Nxh6+ - Kh8
    2. Nf5+ - Kg8 (check is discovered, also knife f5!)
    3. Rxe7, threatening 4. Rxb7 and 4. Nh6+ Kh8 5. Nf7+ Kg8 6. Qh8#. If 3. -, Rf7 then Qxf7+, Qxg7+, Qh7#. If 3. -, Q?? 4. Nh6+ gxh6 then 5. Qg6+, Qh7#.
    At 9:00, what should black have done instead of Qb2-e5? White might like Bg5 and Bf6+ and either mate or winning black's queen. Ne4 is an annoying defender, so maybe first Bxa6 Nxa6 to distract it, depending on what black plays first-which should probably be R?8-but white also has Re1, threatening Re8+ Rxe8 Qxe8#, and of course Qf8# if black's rook leaves the 8th rank. White can also look at Bxa6, Qxa7, Qxb6 and cash in the passed b-pawn for a piece if all else fails.

      Kasparov Blundered a queen and a rook versus Anand in a blitz game. Ivanchuk missed a mate in one versus Anand. Everyone makes mistakes, including Grandmasters and World Champions.

      @@michaelwisner7551 The interesting thing is, i never ever experienced such a big mistake from a elo 2000+ ... they quiet never blunder a piece or mate... They make occassionally strategical blunders - yes , weakening their position from time to time... but never ever blundered a queen. So im very surprised to see it, when others play with eachother, and they are 2100+ or more, and make rock-blunders etc

      @PygmalionFaciebat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Parralyzed Yes, maybe thats a point. Psychological pressure indeed plays a role at chess. Thats how Emanual Lasker often won out of losing positions (and the opponents tended to say : 'he was just lucky' ) ... But still i found it interesting.. i mean: i also won enough times, without the opponent blundered his queen... So even if he didnt felt under pressure, he lost ... Thats interesting... Feeling the whole game 'better' and 'comfortable' against the opponent (me), but still losing against me - but atleast he didnt blundered his queen xD

    At 24:01 when they're at queen B2 and say white loses now, why not have white play rook C8? If Black takes the rook, white takes the queen and stops checkmate by defending the black rook's entry square on C1. If black takes the queen, white takes the rook with checkmate. Am I missing something? I think it works.

    • @naphackDT

      That rook is hanging. Just force a trade of queens by giving check, then take the rook.

    In the Capablanca game, I think white has a better chance with Rc8. Now if black takes the queen, Rxd8# and if black takes the rook he's down a queen. It's still losing for white (NOW you check the king and trade queens and win the rook) but when black has more blunders than good moves that's better than having no obvious blunders on the board!
