What you are seeing is a man walking out on stage and taking control of about 20% of the world population for his time on stage. Even his band was amazed at his performance, other bands went on after Queen but they knew they had been overshadowed and couldnt live up to what he just did. HE OWNED THE WORLD FOR THIS SHOW
40% of the world watched Queen during Live Aid. Though Fred had laryngitis it’s considered the best rock performance of all time.

John laying down a brilliant baseline, Roger on drums and vocals, Dr May with his homemade Red Special guitar and vocals, then, of course, the greatest front man ever, Freddy!

totally agree. I found reaction channels due to lockdowns and boredom - the only good thing for me to come out of all this. Watching younger persons discover and fall in love with all the music i grew up on is so endearing and leaves me just a little bit of hope for humanity.

I love this because Freddy got to show off his charisma with the crowd. He was just pure talent plain and simple and a very class act. The crowd just loved him. He had/has a huge following.

Most bands get one or two truly career defining songs, Queen have (in my mind) ELEVEN, Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, Don't Stop Me Now, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, Another One Bites The Dust, Under Pressure, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Show Must Go On. I watched the entire Live Aid show as an 18 year old girl. Both the USA and UK concerts. It was an all day/ night concert with the biggest musical stars in the entire world. However the UK part, as wonderful as they all were? It became known as The Queen Show. Best twenty minutes of musical rock n roll history. Queen wasn’t considered the huge draw by the producers as they weren’t as big then as the newer hotter stars like Phil Collins and U2. More nostalgic. However the producers underestimated the magic of Freddie and Queen. Timeless and hits like a punch today just as it did when I was a kid. I’m a 55 year old woman now, but will never forget that day.

I watched live aid in a horrible rented room on a borrowed t.v on a rainy Manchester, England Saturday, All I can remember from that day is how Amazing Queen were. I’m now 56 years old . Freddie is so missed but never forgotten.
Saturday 13th July 1985. What a day. A hot, sunny day (unusual for Scotland). 16 yrs old and watched the entire concert from start till end. Opened with Status Quo, Rocking all over the world. Walked to my mates house for an evening Live Aid party and every house had the windows open and concert blaring out. What a day. Once saw an interview with Bob Geldof, he said the concert had gone a bit flat and the donations had started to slow. He had just done a piece to camera backstage asking for more money to be donated when he heard the crowd erupt. WTF has happened he thought. Freddie had just arrived on stage and was doing what he does better than anyone before or since. Had the audience in his hands. Reinvigorated the entire audience of 72,000. The donations started pouring in again.
59 and Australian. It was a great day.
Every time I see this performance, I just think how there was never really been a showman quite like Freddie, and if I'm being honest, there'll never be one like him again. People have and will come close, but he set the bar so high, he took it with him when he got his wings.
It kills me that I never got the chance to see Freddie the genius live. Love him. Best frontman ever!!
I remember sitting watching this with my mum and dad. I was only 5 at the time. When I asked my dad who that man with the vest on was he said, that's Freddie Mercury, one of the greatest musicians alive.
I saw Queen on their first American tour, a long time ago. Now I'm sitting here during covid crisis, I'm 62 years old with tears of joy running down my cheeks!

This was in 1985 Freddie Mercury was diagnosed in 1987 after becoming ill in late 1986, and only made is known 24hours before his death in 1991. He told the rest of Queen in 1989. So in this performance none of them knew what was about to unfold. Its a misconception that he has dying of Aids here. However, there is a theory that Freddie Mercury contracted HIV early 80s but the tests were not reliable at all and he was not displaying any of the symptoms to make anyone worried or concerned at that time.

They weren't even on the original lineup for Live Aid, and were a last-minute add on. And they stole the show.
Not true at all, the queen movie exaggerated that. They were actually pressured because the organizer of live aid said they were coming without asking the band first so they decided to do it. They definitely were not last minute.

I’m a mom and every single time I listen to Freddy Mercury sing those first verses and I know he died of AIDS I cry. I can’t imagine how his mom must have felt. He’s angelic & brave & beautiful soul

The moment he stepped on stage you could tell this was going to be epic. He didn’t waste anything; he and the band jumped right into it and never came back down. They just kept ascending. That’s hard to do. I’m a true Prince fan at my core and nothing can ever replace him but this guy has my utmost admiration and respect. It’s 2023 and I’ve been around since Purple Rain and now I’m living history by watching a legend pour out his essence.
Realize just how difficult Queen songs are to sing. Then know that Freddie’s doctors advised him not to sing because of polyps on his vocal cords. He went on anyway and performed the best 20 minutes of music EVER. So , Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio GaGa ( where Lady GaGa took her name) , Ehhoooh , Hammer to Fall ( the biggest hit from their album just released at the time) , Crazy Little Thing Called Love( Freddie wrote it in tribute to Elvis after he died) , We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions. These last two were written to encourage audience participation. They sure did ‼️‼️‼️
We Will Rock You and We are the Champions are two completely separate songs. Somewhere after the album was released, some radio DJ had decided both were too short to play individually, so he did a bit of mixing and created the ‘song’ we all know; even if many no longer know who it’s by. But you hear that “ThumpThump CLAP!” And you instinctively understand it.
It wasn't polyps, it was the early stages of HIV/AIDS, but he hadn't been diagnosed. He was very unwell, and running a fever but still came out and delivered a performance for the ages.

Also it is well known that Freddie wrote Bohemian Rhapsody, no one knows why he wrote it. He did say he had 6 incomplete songs and that he took those songs and choreography them into one. No one asked him why he did what he did. A lot of his songs where like that. I think that there is only one song that he mentioned a true meaning behind and that is "Love of My Life" which was for Mary Austin is best friend and former fiance.

I watched Live Aid just to get a chance to watch Freddie Mercury live (R.I.P.) and have forever been thankful to have witnessed it live even though it was on television. At that moment Freddie held the whole world in the palm of his hand and it was incredible.

By the way, this wasn't even one of "their" concerts - when the tickets were sold, they weren't even on the list of performers, so many in the crowd weren't Queen fans... until after this performance, lol. They were known to fill stadiums in various parts of the world, sometimes playing for 300,000 in one concert. That kind of explains how they were so comfortable playing for the 72,000 at Wembly. Still a lot, but nothing for Queen, who almost invented the stadium concert.
Yeah, Freddie was about the only one to use that stage to its fullest extent and then some.
Before Queen took the stage, Live Aid was pretty much a flop when it came to why it existed; a massive concert televised to raise awareness, and money, for famines in Africa. Viewership was low, donations were few and Bob Geldoff, creator of Live Aid was furious at the lackluster coverage and was on his way behind the scenes to give the BBC a piece of his mind. Then, not originally on the billing, the lead singer ill and advised by his doctor to take the stage, one of their biggest hits hampered because staging and performance considerations wouldn’t permit them to use necessary background recordings, Queen took to the stage. HearingFreddie sing,Bob turned around, knowing things were going to be just fine.

It's incredible to see 65.000 young people singing in sync Bohemian Rhapsody the whole song nearly 30 years after his death (and more than 40 years from the releasing of the song).
The way that the crowd gets involved is one of the coolest thing ever.

that´s the begin of a legend. i watch that live on tv. when queen finish that amazing performance the guy doing the comments could only say "OH MY GOD!!! OH MY GOD". then started the phone calls. reporters all around the world saying people in front of tv shops, in bars, coffeshops, anywhere with a tv toned in queen live aid show dancing and singing. in japan, australia, india, africa, south america... definitely the biggest sing a long the world has ever seen
I remember having my living room full of friends as we gathered together to watch the entire Live Aid for Africa concert as it was happening. It was a very special day for the entire world, and everyone we knew watched it as well. We all felt like we were Brothers and Sisters, regardless of race, color, or country of origin. We were just humans trying to make a difference in our world and combine our efforts to help other humans who desperately needed help. Music brought us all together that day and it was powerful. Queen's performance at the end of the concert was the icing on the cake. It was like magic, and one of the best days of my life. I became a teenager in the late 70's and a young adult in the 80's, and the music during that time was incredible. I'm so glad to see the multitude of 'reaction' videos made by younger generations who are discovering how amazing the music was in those days. Keep listening, and keep discovering, there is much, much more to be uncovered. Peace. ✌

These weren't even Queen fans - they had already bought the tickets before Queen agreed to appear at the last minute. David Bowie was the following act, and as Queen walked off he just said to them as they passed "You bastards!". Then Bowie went on and did a great set as well. Watched it all on TV live. What a day!

As as die hard metal head and a past touring death/speed metal musician.....I can confidently say that the loss of Freddy Mercury was a true tragedy. Not only to music but to the human race. RIP my brother.
A defining moment in music history. One of, if not, the greatest live performances of all time. No rehearsal, no pay check, just 25 mins, but all from the heart and for a wonderful cause. I remember the day like it was yesterday but now nearly 36 years ago. RIP Freddie and thank you, Queen, for the memories. ❤️
@Pietrasantino, they actually rehearsed for several days before the concert, and I believe that they were the only band that did so.

I was lucky enough to have attended one of their concerts in Montreal. Event of a lifetime, i would've loved to been at live aid. More than 70,000 people and Freddie was the master of crowd control. It is fantastic to see a new generation falling in love with the music of my generation.
When you are performing in London and achieved audience participation in Philadelphia, you have officially.stolen the show.

@@ShannonRous no he said it correctly. Brian May is one of the most amazing guitarists of all time but please make no mistake that Queen would have been nothing without Freddie Mercury. There has not nor will there ever be another front man like him EVER again.

RIP Gord Downie too. His final concert was just as powerful.
Maybe not in the west. But Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Alam lohar, Kuldeep manak, Sukhwinder Singh, and various other Indian/Pakistani singers are at that level, or better. Part of the reason for this is genetics (incidentally, Freddie was born a Parsi Indian) and part of it is a culture in which singers take pride in practicing for hours each day.
I recommend you listen to some of those singers before you say there will never be such a live performance.
I’ve grown up with the sound Queen for a long time now, in my twenty age years and till now. I’m now sixty eight and still they are fabulous. Never heard any band to beat them. It still makes an old man cry😢😢 will always love Queen

Freddie’s doctor advised him not to sing at Live Aid. He had a couple of vodkas before performing to help his voice. Brilliant showman.

I honestly thought "crazy little thing called love" is originally from Elvis and Queen covered it. Just found out Freddie wrote it in 10min and wanted it to sound like an Elvis Rockabilly song.

Here in Britain 🇬🇧 we grew up through 70s, 80s. It was fantastic music for our teenage years. Freddie was the greatest front man ever. Glad you enjoyed it as much as we do. 👍😀
