The crazy thing is that Freddie was actually sick and recommended by doctors not to do this concert but he did it anyway. So could you imagine how much better it would’ve been if he was healthy.

You can hear his voice give in a few times, that was extremely unusual for him. I get throat infections frequently, and I can't imagine how much it must've hurt to just keep blasting over it like that. Mindblowing.

Remember that this was not a Queen crowd.
Only a small number of them were dedicated Queen fans, but the whole audience knew what was expected of them.

When you say "look at the crowd" what you need to realize is that this was being broadcast live all over the world. People all over the planet were literally singing together. I was a young punk at the time and hated popular music but still, me and all my friends watched this performance live and sang every single word with Freddy and the rest of the world. We'll will never see anything like this performance again. So glad that young people are discovering it. I am not an old man crapping on today's artists but every musician today could learn from Queen.

Elton on Freddie: “Backstage at Live Aid, I had a huge area that I kind of decorated. I made sure there were seats for everyone, so that people who were playing could sit down and have a natter. Freddie came over after Queen had stolen the show. I said, “Freddie, nobody should go on after you - you were magnificent.” He said: “You’re absolutely right, darling, we were - we killed them.”” Elton continued, “He was so excited. Then he said, “You, on the other hand, dear - you looked like the fucking Queen Mother when you were on stage. Where did you get that absolutely awful hat?” That was very Freddie. He was hilarious.

There is a story that Elton tells of Freddie. Freddie passed on 24th Nov 1991. In Dec 1991 a parcel turned up for Elton. Freddie had been on the internet and seen a picture that he knew Elton would love, and that was Freddie's Christmas gift to Elton.

all the other bands and singers got mad because Freddy and Queen completely stole the show, entirely, a lot of them were bitching that Queen made their comeback and destroyed the whole show, with their TOP NOTCH performance, even tho the doctors told Freddy not to sing, he had nodes on his throat and was in danger of losing it for good, but he said screw that, I'm doing it, it did sound a bit rough in spots, but anybody and everybody who knows him knows that it was just a slightly off day and he can sing better than all of them combined in the studio and usually live too,

Live Aid was a charity concert to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia with several famous acts who volunteered to participate and didn’t get paid. Each act had a 20 minute set. A lot of the other performers played their current songs to promote their albums and didn’t take advantage of the time.
Queen took it seriously and spent a week or so putting their playlist together and they had giant clocks in front of them so they could practice and pack as much in as they could in 20 minutes. It also helped that the sound guy worked for Queen and tweaked it so that Queen was louder than everyone else.
By the middle of the set, the other acts backstage started to watch them on the monitors and realized that Queen was stealing the show and basically kicked everyone’s ass and they knew it!! Brian May (guitarist) said that they had an advantage because they’d been playing stadiums for years and Freddie knew how to get the crowd involved.
Many people say it’s the best live performance. Also, because the stage was pretty basic due to all the different artists, critics didn’t think Queen would pull it off because their shows are typically a huge production with lighting etc. and again Queen shut down the critics proving that they can put on a great show with just the four of them.
David Bowie who was a big star back then was the next act in the lineup and was quoted in an interview later saying how was he supposed to follow that.
Elton John was quoted as saying 'Freddie, nobody should go on after you - you were magnificent. ' Freddie said: 'You're absolutely right, darling, we were - we killed them.

And the backlash against gays still makes me really angry, as all prejudices do. And God bless the parents that accept the way their children are born. I have two sons, one of which is gay. Can’t tell y’all how mad I get when I hear it was because I was a single mother! 😡 I taught them how to catch, toss a football because that’s who I was. I believe it’s called transgender today. Walk a mile in the shoes of others. Freddie, I’ll love you forever.

I was at this gig & it was this performance that launched Queen back into the forefront of music again after having a lull in popularity. Those musicians all worked brilliantly together for years and it was a stroke of luck that Adam Lambert was later able to become the frontman a few years after Freddie died. Please note Brian on guitar. He plays 3 different guitars on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". He starts on a acoustic, then to a Fender Stratocaster, then ends with The Red Special. All of them are incredibly talented and play multiple instruments. Roger Taylor has done several solo albums and plays every thing from drums to lead & rhythm guitar, bass, keyboards and many others. Roger is very outspoken about the fact that most people only focus on Freddie"s vocal ability and not to his all around ability as a musician.

One of the unique things about Queen, and I really can't think of any other artists that come to mind, but there might be.... They didn't just push their performance out on the fans, it wasn't "one way". They instead, invited their fans "into" their performances, making them feel that they were just as much as part of and invested in the song as the band, making them all for that short time personally involved with one another. If I am not mistaken, Brian and Roger still continue to do so til this day. Freddie, well he just felt every note that came out of every instrument, he disappeared and became the music, it's as if you could see the music leave his body. And you're right, he could run around that stage like a mad man and did most of the time because he had so much energy when the music was playing, but never lost a breath or even got weak. They are all legends, and don't think another band is ever going to match them, in one aspect here or there maybe, but not as a whole, because Queen had it all, all the genres, their love for and interaction with the fans, their presence, performance, ALL of it was nothing less than 110% because they wouldn't accept anything less than that for the fans they loved so much. Also need to add real quick....Roger (drummer) would keep a close eye on Freddie, he was a filler, he could tell when Freddie would get a little tired, and he would bring his voice in to fill it up, this is why you never caught any weakness in vocals "if" there were any. Roger is an amazing singer as is Brian.

@@adriennevanquill1263 What I respect about Adam is he never came out and tried to be "Freddie" he comes out and does it as "Adam" but in a manner that respects Freddie's work. I do not really like Mark Martel because he is more of a "look at me, I can sound like Freddie" and comes across like he believes he is as good and needs the acknowledgement that he is strong enough to carry Freddie's music. I will say that yes he sounds a bit like Freddie, but a weak one, his vocals will never be as strong and powerful. The only other singer I think could have given Freddie a run for his money in a rock band as far as a powerhouse vocal, would have been Steve Perry from Journey, but Steve could really only sing in Soprano, he didn't have the range and the power like Freddie did in the lower tones.

Nope while odds are Freddie had HIV at that time it's unlikely it had progressed to full blown AIDS at that point. Also Freddie himself didn't know at this time wasn't til later that he begin to suspect and even then he got a lot of negative test back as testing was very hit or miss. But yes once he did figure it out the band was on a short list of people who knew as he keep it tight lipped so it wouldn't affect the band in anyway (also why even though he was super duper Bi/Gay he refused to actually admit it in interviews and what not). It's also why I personally have doubts that the day before his death his announcement that he was Gay and had AIDS was his idea or that he gave permission to announce it as he felt doing so would kill the band in the eyes of the public ( not a unfounded fear he had seen plunty of people dragged though the mud and ruined coming out Roc Hudson I think for example) so I think it was someone in his house ( Caretaker or his SO ) who acted on his behalf.

Liite, I have watched your Live Aid concert reaction many many times and enjoyed it, but i think it's time for you to redownload the entire Queen LIVE AID set and really enjoy the full Queen set from the time they come on stage to the very end. Queen live was and is truly an experience from start to finish. The more you watch it the more you get from it and can understand why Queen fans are the way they are about Queen. It's all about the performance. After all their years together what did they do the week before the Live Aid concert? REHEARSE!! REHEARSE!! REHEARSE!! You commented on why Freddie could so easily transition from one type of song to another and sound so good it was because they rehearsed. Some day when you have time try and catch the Queen concert at Wembley 1986, for your own enjoyment, that will give you a true appreciation of Queen! Queen performed years before Live Aid to much larger audiences in South America. I believe their concert in Rio had something like 300,000 people in attentance. Queen LIVE IS TRULY AN EXPERIENCE!!!
