hi paul let me compliment you for your personal attribute you have "your voice" and "clear communication". you are absolutely fantastic, i have been seeing your videos whenever i get time. your creativity is excellent as an Angler , cheers keep sending your videos and techniques i really loved them thanks
Awesome vid paul. Skip, whom i dont know but grew up across the bay from where he is,got me into watching your lure making vids. This was a real treat. It is amazing how many people do not have a clue about being able to do a simple set up as yours, and are able to catch fresh fish process, and eat. They go about their daily lives thinking evrything magically appears in their local super markets. (OUTDOORS IS WHERE ITS AT) Thanks for sharing...
Yeah i just touched lucky that morning, although fishing into the sunset a couple of days earlier on a empty beach was pretty special also. Considering that it is so close to civilization it is a great place to get a bit of peace and fish.
I like to think it is Australians on bottom half of the world, just as their water goes down the plug hole the other way so to there thumbs up are, our thumbs down, you cannot fight physics, Happy Christmas
.just a friendly tip..cutting the gills is the best method for killin cause its instant death plus it drains the blood out wich gives you a cleaner and much better tatsing fish......your vids rock thanks for sharing the tutorials are very helpful....
Hey! That's a veeery good video. I've really liked it. Continue making this type if videos. You "how to make" videos are great, but keep making more FISHING videos. I love your channel and your videos. :)
The reason I do not just use 20lb line straight through is 10lb helps me cast further as it is thinner and offer less resistance to the rod eyes. If you are casting large weights say 6oz you can use 60lb rig/shock leader and then something like 15-18lb reel line, with the right rod and technique this can produce incredible distances.
Thank you, a simple vid ...Easy to follow no faffing and well cooked in the pan no messing about with a salad and endless bits of this and that just mackerel and a dip with chips will do more mackerel fishing..Alan
For 2oz (60g) of weight everything between the weight and the reel requires a minimum breaking strain of 20lb (9kg), as a rule of thumb every 1oz (30g) of cast weight requires 10lb (4.5kg) of breaking strain; so 1oz requires 10lb bs, 2oz requires 20lb, 3oz requires 30lb, and so on. So my setup in the vid starts with a 2oz (60g) weight, the rig is looped in and the main line on the rig is 30lb (13.5kg) so above the 20lb. The rig is looped into a swivel also rated above 20lb. cont.
Great video Paul I'm not near the ocean but that sure looked like a lot of fun. I was thinking about trying some of your mackerel jigs out on panfish to see if they'd like them.
rather than tapering all the way to the base which is more likely to become wedged a small taper then a cylinder seems to snag less. With the feather rigs i found if i lengthened the distance between the weight and the first branch above from 300mm or less (on shop bought rigs) too 450mm i lost far fewer rigs. That extra bit of line meant i went from loosing 2-3 rigs per trip to having one rig on rod for fifteen trips. I also never use a swivel to connect to the weight cont...
very nice, thanks a lot, I enjoyed that, takes me back to September last year, took two weeks off work, spent most days catching mackerel on a float, one at a time, In Shoreham, lovely video, makes me long for some nice fresh summer mackerel for tea, incidentally, Sept 8 is my birthday
I realized after i had finished the video i never mentioned bleeding. I generally snap the necks of mackerel and that normally severs the joint and the arteries below the gills and they bleed out. Commercially Atlantic mackerel are not bled they are chilled which and so i am led to believe the blood is draw from the muscle to the organs as survival measure. Cheers
Love your videos, thank-you. One of my favorite parts of fishing is making my own gear to catch, you have that part down, well done. My wife prefers the fish that are not so fishy tasteing, so when catching mack's or blues, I bleed them. Cut through the gills before dropping them into the cooler, it seems to cut down on the oily-ness. I do not really mind the extra flavor, :). I am in the USA, no pebble beaches. If I wash anything in the suds, it would be covered with a lot of sand. Thanks
i don not fish down that often, but i would of thought there is still a fair chance, it feels a little like summer is not going to end this year. Good luck, but if the mackerel are in you won't need just a cool box cheers.
sadly i have never fished in the red sea, i used to fishing in scotland from a boat over reefs covere with a thick weed called kelp. On e of the main reasons i started tying my ow feather rigs was because i was loosing so many of the bought ones and the weights. What worked for me was using a smooth weight with a flat bottom almost like the the one in my weight making video. I found weights with pointed ends more easily find there way into gaps and get stuck also rather than taper fully cont.
Luckily we still have reasonable stocks over here but I guess that can change rapidly. I am kind of always conscious when taking wild fish for food that although it may be free after the cost of the tackle it feelsa bit like a privilege and that means I have duty to maybe honor that by not wasting or abusing it. If only we could catch mackerel on Barts, that would be something to see. cheers Cheers
It was one of my plans to do some more catching and cooking,I realy want to do a full series of videos on a more professional level with some time devoted to the cooking side of things. I think i am at the end what i can achieve with my current equipment, not so much the camera but the homemade dollys, slides and lack of sound recording equpment, Fundementally what really pushed me to make my own lures was fishing for food. I think i need to do a kickstarter, thanks for the feedback
The swivel is tied to a piece of shock leader rated a 20lb bs this is monofilament fishing line, some companies make a particular type of monofilament called shock leader for this purpose. I use two rod lengths as the measure of the length of my shock leader; this means when I wind up to cast the shock leader is wound round my reel half a dozen times. The shock leader is then tied to my main line which is 10lb (4.5kg) using an Albright knot which is strong but also neat and slim for casting.
Makeral are a relatively new species to the west coast of Vancouver Island.British Columbia The are considered a problem fish to the Salmon and other species. They started coming more up north with the ocean warming up. The government and local commercial fishermen encourage sport fishing for them and nat releasing them
For the beach and fishing i used one camera and a digital recorder for sound and filmed from different angles, this was a bit of a nightmare as i kept catching fish. For the filleting i used three cameras at the same time and a digital recorder, this was a bit of a nightmare setting up but quick to film, for the cooking 2 cameras and the recorder. The cameras are all digital compacts i have been given as people have bought better cameras. I still have a lot to learn especially about sound cheers
yeah Paul i have in the past, but i liked the way you made the casting silouette, maybe you could combine your filming talents with an other, john makes it look oh so easy,i have tried and made the cast a few times but its not as straight forward as it looks-even with practise.love your channel
Excellent vid mate - loved it. I'm down on chesil this friday and are hoping to get some mackerel and codling (I hear they are showing now) Is it too late for a few mackerel?
A shock leader is one way to deal with this but another is to use 30lb braided line which may sound very heavy but it's extremely thin, casts a long way and eliminates a bulky shock leader knot. Another advantage with braid is it doesn't stretch so you feel connected to your end gear all the time and can detect the smallest of bites. Downside is the cost but there are bargains on eBay and it will last for a few years.
wow mate you do the lot lure builds , cook .We catch those slimey mackrel for live bait in Australia and have never thought to eat them probably due to the prep time but you may well have inspired me ! great work great channel
My mate takes his smoker down to Chesil (we're lucky we live in Weymouth) and you really must try hot smoked Mackerel on the beach, I don't think they can be beat ... Thanks for the video
When you cast a weight you can generate a lot of force just before releasing the line. So everything between the weight and reel needs to be able to deal with that force. Rods are normally supplied these days with the recommended weight it will cast printed on the rod so mine casts between 10 - 40g, in the vid I go a little higher and use 60g (2oz) lead mainly because they do not sell 1 1/2oz (40g) weights in the shop. cont.....
i always thought that with lighter line and smaller hooks this may be workable for small fresh water fish like perch, but i have yet to test it in freshwater.
What are the white rings in the jug of water?? Great vid. I'm going to copy your instructions from start to finish! and can't wait to taste the end result. Thanks for a fantastic film. Very much appreciated, thank you!
to connect to the weight as i found they can also become snagging points, instead i looped into the weight and placed a swivel between the rig and the main line. I don't know if this will help fishing in the red sea.
Ryan Hewitt Have fun, I always think the worst thing that can happen when i go fishing is I end up spending a hour or so staring out to sea or at the pond and if the fish turn up it is always a bonus

Great videos Paul. We go fishing in the red sea and of course there are lots of reefs in the bottom and that is why the sinker once touches the reef below, it gets stuck. Not everytime, but as the boat moves left and right, sometimes it gets stuck! Any idea how to make a sinker that is creative enough to avoid getting stuck!!!! I know it is a stupid question it seems, but that is a very annoying issue for us anglers and we have to be very very sensitive everytime we through the line.

Hi Paul, great video, I am gunna give this a crack at Dawlish soon. I've got two rods, one big beach caster I guess around 11 ft and also a smaller rod with smaller reel, around 8 ft. New to this, which rod is best for off the beach and sea wall at Dawlish for mackerel? Thanks!
Is your camera very good and with good clarity or do you use bright coloured lenses? Its a really brilliant video thanks Paul ps I watching that makes me hungry!
All of this-- from the rig setup, fishing, cleaning, and cooking-- was really well shot. Thanks for putting in the effort!
thanks

Great video, I'm 16 and look forward to early morning mackerel fishing In summer all year, can't beat it:)

Only just found your channel bud, superb!!! Very well presented and a great watch!
Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down? It was very informative and excellently shot! Well done and thank you.

A mackerel cut in half and popped up makes an excellent pike deadbait........great video and I bet that fish tasted bloody handsome !!!

Top vid mate. From sea to plate. Well I know what me and the wife will be eating this weekend. ;)
Great simplistic fishing vid from start to finish. TYVM. ATB.Reeco
I like how at the end he said ' 30 seconds later '. I would've eaten it in probably 5 minutes though. Thanks Paul Adams!
You have manners, i was raised in the wild by a pack of chiwawas. Thanks lol

Great video! Mackerel looked delicious! Xxx
Joshua Roberts it’s not a very nice tasting fish
West Bexington, 4 m from Westbay, there is a car park which gets a bit busy at the weekend but it is free before 8am and after 6pm cheers

Great vid mate. liked the way you fished light rather than with standard beach caster and feathers. I fish light and the fight is so much more fun.
robert knight-archer I never really understood the whole beachcaster thing for mackerel, but i might give it a try i need to lose some weight

thanks, funny one man's bait is another's dinner.
sorry about the ashes mate :)
yes we are eating humble pie made with slimeys
lol onya mate
Yeah mackerel put up a GREAT FIGHT especially for their size.. Also when you get more than 1 on your rig it feels great!

Looked delicious! How many cameras did you film with to make the whole video?
smoked mackerel, i once ate so much of it i began to smell like someone smoking a cigar in fish factory. I might rig up smoker in the garden.
Cheers
Back to Chesil Beach for the last chance for some Mackerel
im in love with u man
ur voice and u mesmerized me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i wish i was there wit u in the kitchen
It is a couple of hundred miles from where i live. Cheers, really happy memories of fishing there
A beach with gravel and not sand...that's amazing.
SuperLocness This is really a huge bank of pebbles that runs about 18 miles, it is naturally graded by the sea so at one end all the pebbles are tiny and at the other very large and hard to walk on, but all good for fishing
Outstanding, love them cooked in a bira butta.
helpful video to watch. I normally catch them and give them to my dog.
Thought it may have been, its a little bit tight down that rd,i live down near Wimborne me self so not that far from the sea in any direction last time I fished chisel i blanked
Even though your video is 3+ years old it's still inspirational to watch Paul. I am new to fishing and I had some limited exposure to fishing in New Zealand. I've never done fishing here in UK before but watching this video makes me wanting to get hold of Fishing Rod & Reel kit. Is it possible to get hold of you via email?
never mind i don't think you will starve with 30plus sausages that would last me the day., do you cold or hot smoke?
lol love the ending funny guy!
nice video,enjoyed it a lot
Thanks
Good video man.
nice nice! i think i'll try making one for myself
Great vid !! Next time you get some mackerel could you show us how to make mackerel pate please.
The traveller It has been a long time since i made mackerel pate, i think that is great video idea but i do not think we will see mackerel again until next summer, thanks
i love it please do more videos!!!
cheers, working on one as i type
in the uk they get used for bait as well, but not if i get to them first.
try john holden, his youtube channel has a lot of pendulum cast videos and links to information.
Cheers
Well done.
I've never had the pleasure of makerel,. Looks delicious. Is it anything like trout?
Ah OK mackerel. Nice dish!
Do you have any good ideas on making a good spinner lure? like maybe form a 10p coin or something similar?

Can't beat some fresh mackerel
Hi Paul, great video, I am gunna give this a crack at Dawlish soon.
I've got two rods, one big beach caster I guess around 11 ft and also a smaller rod with smaller reel, around 8 ft.
New to this, which rod is best for off the beach and sea wall at Dawlish for mackerel? Thanks!
Is your camera very good and with good clarity or do you use bright coloured lenses? Its a really brilliant video thanks Paul ps I watching that makes me hungry!
this was filmed on mostly on a sony nex 5, i think i benefited from the light at the beach. In the house i used some lights. Cheers
