What a great reflection of motorsport and Rally driving. You have to hand it to Peter wherrett he was definitely ahead of his time and onto things that were still applicable in the 2000's.. A genuinely interesting show. We need something like this today?
Gotta love at 11:30 (and at other points during the telecast) how much Peter was talking about the negative impacts on the environment cars and racing has, like the world is going to end due to the their impact. All the while at that very second he is under a clear sky with absolute spectacular weather to the point that you couldn't ask for a nicer day. Weather that is very common in Sydney (and Australia in general) to this very day. The environment fear mongering is so laughable, even back then.
you all prolly dont care but does anybody know a method to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
This was on TV before I was around. Peter was way ahead of his time and there aren't many journos of his quality left. Imagine and ABC journo calling a spade a spade now.
Even in 1980 it must have been pretty unusual to see all the instruments on a FIAT X1/9 functioning correctly. The build quality on them could be rather, well, variable and indifferent...
Drives away in the Charade, and the very next vehicle they show is the Masling Stanza with the 3.5L Rover V8 in it, with the Charade rolling up next on the ramp.
Hooray to Peter wherret and his great rally skills! That Datsun 280ZX he drove almost suited him. Even better it's not the version of the Datsun z car that has the stupid T-bar roof with its removable outer roof panels which made it a t-bar roofed car. The 2+2 full roof hatchback coupe version looks way better than the T-bar roof version in my opinion.
I've heard all the jokes about the Alfa seating layout being set for people with short legs and gorilla arms...but many Italians I know in the day tended to drive by holding the bottom of the steering wheel, rather than what we think of as the traditional "10 to 2" position. I personally find it a little awkward for spirited driving - but the steering wheel position and angle make a whole lot more sense when driven like that.
I've always loved the Datsun 280ZedX. I find it way more attractive than its predecessors, the 240-280Zed, and it's also more attractive than the Nissan 300ZedX.
It seems an incredible coincidence and perhaps just bad luck that this show spanned the years of the oil crisis (1974-1980), which I guess accounts for Peter's continuing pussy talk on V8's and focus on economy. Hell only a half a dozen years later in 1986 I was pumping petrol in Adelaide at 30-40 cents a litre.
@@turbinegraphics16 Well, from what I remember there was a concerted push for energy and nature conservation beginning around the mid seventies from certain segments of society ( the so called inner city elite and your hippie/greenie types mostly) with the ABC being the vocal conduit and advocate of these views. Perhaps the catalyst for this was the beginning of the oil crisis, but in any case Peter Wherrett's style of automotive reporting fitted this mold/agenda perfectly. But from my prospective this DID NOT reflect the bulk of opinion from the working class and middle class Aussies and you gotta remember this was a time when Australia still had a heap of factories and most things were Aussie made. I mean in the mid to late seventies when I was at primary school, so many kids would wear their Ford or Holden (and the occasional Chrysler) jackets to school, proudly displaying their allegiances.....we loved our V8's. Any way, this "green" push lasted around 10-12 years (even resulting in Ford dropping their V8's altogether for about 8 years...1983-1990), but by the late 80's, with the oil price hovering around epic lows and the "Greed is Good" Gordon Gekko mantra as well as the "Reaganomics" agenda of unbridled consumerism - all that changed. So put it this way, IMO, Peter Wherrett's show's reflected his and the ABC's views and preferences on how Australia and the world should be rather than reflecting the actual views and preferences of most Aussie men. I mean, if for example Peter Brock would have hosted a motoring show around the same time on say channel 7, it would have been a substantially different product and a ratings winner I reckon. Sorry to bore you with my rant!
@@Kamina1703 ah sorry, I thought it was a ZG. I love the old Fairlanes and LTD's. Sorry to hear about what happened to your ZG. What a pity😔 How long did you have it?
Back in the days when you could bolt in a $500 roll cage, $200 for a pair of harnesses, and a couple of second hand motorbike helmets and go racing in your $1000 daily driver. Affordable grass roots motor racing and why Drifting appeals to the yoof these days and no one cares about the unobtainable V8 Supercars, except for Bathurst of course.
The Alfa's were great driving cars from those small motors. Similar sized engines would be the Corolla or Corona, and they had nothing on the Alfa. But build quality and reliability issues did let the Alfa's down.
@@oo0Spyder0oo I should have thought of the Subaru, or the Honda Goldwing GL1100 motorcycle. That was a liquid cooled boxer 4 too. Later models are a boxer 6.
40 years later and the ONLY engine allowed in Australian touring car racing is a 5 litre V8, and has been for decades. And on the road performance car engines are still big, if anything bigger than they used to be.
The datto was a far better car than the aliased. The alfasuds rusted at the site of humidity and the quality was a dismal and they weren't without mechanicle problems either and bits fell off them on the inside.they would of been a decent car if the quality of the metals were good but that's what let them down and what made them a crappy car, there would still be plenty around if the quality was better. From memory one of my teacher at grade school had one and it made a few odd noises and squeaks and you could literally here the fuel sloshing around in the tank when stopping and starting off at the lights. I'll take the datto 280 z thanks.

Familiar voice of ABC motoring commentator Will Hagen can b heard as the MC for the rally
Peter looked like the Doc out of Back To The Future after that rally.
😂😂
Peter wasn't just a great motoring journalist, he could bloody well drive too!
Competed in 3 Bathurst 1000s I think, and owned a driver training school (based at Oran Park Raceway from memory)
John's hair is what lego used to model the "legoman" hair do. It's truly amazing.

John Keith has the "full face helmet" of hairstyles!

That’s a crook old head of hair!
This show is great! Thanks for uploading.
You're welcome
Isn't it funny to realize that Werrett was a hard core Greenie?
Superb head of hair John 👍🏻

It was not variable - consistently woeful!
@@arnonmus1 I wouldn't say that, SOME of them were actually pretty well built...
Admittedly that number was in single digits...
1980 wherret still complaining about running out of oil.
40yrs later in 2019 we have negative oil prices
Fracking is the reason why, very environmentally unfriendly.

The ABC is incapable of creating such a programme today. Unless it was about solar powered tricycles !
Or had an LGBQTI+ angle

I think Ashley & Martin overdosed with John Keith’s “Hair Tonic” formula!!!!
That Commodore reminds me of Willie Hepburn's Wesbank Modifieds NASCAR V8 engined Opel Rekord.

2023 cars have steering wheel angel adjustment and length
The V8 is still going strong and is still being raced. Still the best all round engine!
Yep - got 3 in my driveway - all Fords. Once you're had a V8 its like drugs - hard to give up.
Those Daihatsons were very popular here in Europe back in the days

How many people earned $19000 per year in 1980?
That’s over $80k today. The Charade was the equivalent of $23k today. That base Kia or Hyundai looks pretty good in that context...

Well, here in 2023 Holden is gone and word is that Ford is pulling out of V8 racing. Your doomsaying was not even close to accurate, however.
