    The above links to an article from the Australian Women''s Weekly dated Oct 16 1974, about the then new Torque program and Peter Wherrett.
    "Torque began in 1974 and continued to rate highly in its evening timeslot for the ABC until it came to an end in 1980. Peter Wherrett always said he made the series with the public broadcaster because he wanted to be able to pull no punches about those vehicles that had safety or engineering problems.     I feel overwhelming sadness watching these treasures, knowing that Peter Wherrett is no longer with us, he was so intelligent and compassionate. Way ahead of his time. That said, 70s fashions were brutal!

    I don’t care what anyone says about ol’ Pete, I think he’s a very likeable and very intelligent man with a good set of morals. Had we have been the same age in the same era, I’m sure we could’ve been mates. Good on ya Peter for trying to shape Australia the right way. If there were more people like him in todays media the public would be much better informed and guided.

    Wow! I used to fly that Learjet. It was a Lear 25 that ran out of Essendon airport with Stilwell Learjet. So nice to see BLJ again....

    Pete was a man who had balls and spoke his mind, he wasn't afraid to step on a few toes, all for the betterment of the car driver in Australia and the country itself, it's a pity we didn't have a few more like him in government. About the lead he was right 40 years ago, and now it is out. R.I.P. Pete....................

    Geez! 1980. I was driving a petrol gobbling LX Torana Hatch with the small V8, having just unloaded my much loved and rapidly rusting (and depreciating) Alfetta 1.8 Sedan. The Poor Runner (as my Ford loving mates called it) at least had Radial Tuned Suspension, but it was still a boat anchor after the Alfa.

    As an owner of a Golf 6, this is fascinating. Peter Wherett was so insightful as to the future variations in engines. Great stuff.

    Good TV stands the test of time! It was also interesting to hear Peter talk about the tradeoff needed to grow the crops for alternative fuels. Even back in those days, they knew they'd take up the space needed for food crops.

    I once owned this 1979 Mazda 323 RWD in red with this appalling caramel brown interior. A 1- 4 engine and 4-spd manual moved the car along. It was noisy and slow. You had to put the gearbox to good use to get the thing going. It brought out the driver in you, and forced you to participate.
    Old cars like this make you feel alive. They had character and bought a smile to your face. They were noisy, and motoring was interesting back then.

    In Australia this would have cost as much as the cheapest Ferrari in Europe. The 924 was the "cheap" Porsche in Europe but in Australia they had high tariffs to protect the local car industry

      At least with the early 911 the basic characteristic was oversteer right up to the limit, and you would push it knowing this. 26:38 - Any car like the 924, and especially with a turbo, that suddenly changes behaviour right on the limit is in my opinion very dangerous. Peter was able to catch it on a dry racetrack in the daytime, but imagine if this happened on a wet highway bend at night, with trees lining the sides.

    I phoned him at 7am one Sunday morning in 1977. I was waiting outside Oran Park Raceway for one of his business associates. I can report he was polite even under that circumstance. And he answered the phone!
    The background to this is that at the time Peter had lent his name to an advanced driving and racecraft school - although it was generally taught by others; such as John Leffler, and a few other guys with a racing background, if memory serves.
    Whatever the details, I seem to recall that I had turned up at the wrong entrance gate, or maybe I was just very early... it was a long time ago!
    If anyone else can add some extra specific history of Peter Wherrett's advanced driving school, or any of his other ventures, I would be very interested to know!

      Turbocharging is also mainstream. Cars that would have demanded a large 4 or small 6 just a couple of decades ago are now powered by smaller turbocharged 4s that still manage better performance and economy, despite the rest of the vehicle being loaded down with the safety and convenience items demanded by today's car buyer. Then there are the small fours that are now small threes, because turbo.

    I remember when the 1st generation VW Golf was on the market. I was too young at the time to drive a car, but I've known people who have owned and driven them. Both in gasoline (petrol) powered, and the diesel powered cars. I find that they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

    I never knew diesels were turbocharged to significantly reduce NOx emissions. It's amazing how far they've come an alpine bmw 330d for example has been seen to match track times of a petrol m3, whilst still achieving decent 35mpg economy ratings (when driven normally of course!).

    15s 0 to 100km/h and it only weighed around 800kg. Not quite the performance figures of today. Having said that, when I was around 18 (1981) my friend had a diesel golf and I loved it. We could put $5 in the tank and drive almost anywhere. In 2008 I bought a golf R32 which weighed around 1500kg and did 0 to 100km/h in 6s, that was also a great car. Golfs are truly legendary!

    The crazy thing about this Porsche is that its two litre turbo engine only produced 177hp (132kW), or around what you'll get from a modern Civic or Corolla. How things have changed!

    Just as well that particular Porsche 924 had turbocharger because a non turbo 924 was a limb biscuit. If memory serves that engine is based on a VW in-line 4 van engine.

      Yes it was used in the LT but it was a Mercedes design when they owned DKW VAG bought Mercedes shares in DKW used it in the 1st gen C1 Audi 100. quite a rugged engine. All the engines are basically Mercedes in origin including the 5cyl petrol and Diesel. Wide cam lobes very good top end lubrication. My very early 1977 Audi C2 100 has the Carburetted version of the 924 the 924 being fuel injected. I want an early 924.
      Bear in mind the bog standard 924 was an every day Porsche. They are now becoming collectable. The next gen used contra rotation balance shafts to make smoother.
      Also the 4cyl 2.0L was used in the AMC Gremlin. But strangling smog gear and AC made them athsmatic.

    He praises turbo charged diesels. What he doesn't mention is although the diesel turbo had better acceleration it would have cost the owner a packet in repair costs when the turbo blew up and damaged the engine and turbo internal components. Non turbo particularly at that time would have been the better option.

    funny, how in 2019, efficient turbo-charged petrols are probably the most used form of propulsion in cars. Yeah I know there are hybrids and EV's and they will get more popular, but the best compromise in terms of performance, fuel economy, emissions and affordability here and now is a turbo petrol, be it a 1.5 turbo in something like a Ford Focus or Honda Civic, a 2.0 litre turbo in a Commodore, many an SUV and even Mercedes C-Class, E-Class and BMW/Audi, Lexus equivalents along with 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder turbos in many performance cars.

Think back to the 70's, Aussie manufacturers kept producing the same substandard rubbish because of no competition due to taffifs and duties, and kept pushing the prices up as far as possible. When the Gov finally started reducing tarrifs they forced to start improving and be more competitive.

    Dating back to the 1970's when we became aware of almost limitless offshore gas reserves, Australia should have phased in a mandate that every car, bus, truck, and tractor be designated LPG, and ensured that the wholly locally-sourced commodity was priced at an equivalent 2023 price of around fifteen cents a litre.
    This arrangement would have given our industries a huge competitive export advantage over the rest of the world that are reliant on imported petrol or diesel.
    Furthermore, it would have been a boon for our "Balance of Payment" figures because we would not be importing from nations like Singapore.
    Finally, decidedly cleaner LPG would result in our current national CO2 emissions being already less than our current 2030 targets.
    Australia's unimaginative and short-sighted political and media dullards missed an opportunity to achieve significant economic and environmental outcomes that would have enormously benefited past, current and future generations.

      Daimler-Benz took control of Auto Union in 1958-1959.
      In 1963, DKW released an all-new chassis design, the DKW F102. This was a modern unibody chassis, but with DKW's old 2-stroke drivetrain, causing it to fail in the market.
      Volkswagen ended up purchasing Auto Union in 1964, and in 1965, the Audi brand was relaunched to release the F103 chassis "Audi" (later, the 72, 75, 80, and Super 90) - a lightly modified F102, with a 4-stroke engine jointly developed between Daimler-Benz and Auto Union.
      Make clear the engines were already developed way before VAG bought. The Audis built Under VAG were marketed as a Mercedes at Audi prices.

    Why do you show XA, XD an then drive something else. I had both of the models, one Fairmont XA, first one I bought coming to Australia, and three Fairmonts XDies. One station wagon, done over 700.000 klicks, other two were stolen never retrieved. Had friends from Canada saying how beautifully those cars looked, I like them "cause I could work on them.
