I have a closet where the shelves broke out and all my clothes fell on the floor!! I had no idea how to fix it, so I was looking at videos on how to do it myself. Thank God that's when I saw your video on how to fix it myself!! Thank you for taking the time to explain it step by step without fast-forwarding it!! I'm a 65 handicap lady with a 96 year old husband and we have to fix everything in our house by ourselves because of our income we can't afford to hire people to do it. They always ask much more than we can pay. Thanks again for being patient and explaining it slowly!! God bless you! Now I'll be able to do it.🙏👍👍👏
Thank you for posting your video! My dad recently passed away; he was our resident, "Mr. Fix Everything." He taught me so much about home and car maintenance! I really appreciate channels like yours because you give step-by-step instructions with visual instructions. Dad always said to read the instructions...he was an engineer, so for him, written instructions were a walk in the park. I'm a visual learner, so videos are much more helpful. When he would teach me how to do something, the hands-on approach always worked best for me. Thank you again for your very helpful, step-by-step, easy-to-understand video! I look forward to your weekly posts!
This 14 year's installed Rubbermaid shelf held up with tons of clothes....until it didn't. Thanks so much for sharing the toggle bolt clip "fix" as these 68 yr old walls finally gave up and spat the original plastic clips with nails out leaving large holes. Great help!!
First time I've watched one of your videos. I liked that the teaching was mostly done while you were working instead of standing still talking, then demonstrating which takes forever. Several options, easily understood, and great info! Thanks!
You're a life saver! I'm a new home owner and had 2 shelves fall down and didn't know where or how to start the repairs. This was a perfect step by step video. TY!
Excellent demonstration. Today I’m fixing my daughter’s closet, which came crashing down last week. I now feel confident that I can easily repair and reinforce it.
Yeah, ours came crashing down yesterday. Lots of broken parts and pieces to try and get it put back up again. I think it’s a sign My wife has too many clothes.
I want to echo the sentiments of the other viewers and express my appreciation for this quick, simple, and easy-to-follow installation guide. I had a rack similar to the one in your video that decided it and the drywall it was connected to were going to part ways - literally! The sudden break-up resulted in all of my clothes crashing to the floor. Thanks to your video, I was able to get it back up using the toggle bolts and the same holes.
Thank you!! Your video is by far the clearest and most detailed. Some of us are truly beginner diyers and need all the help we can get. I know I can get my shelving hung correctly the first time now!!
I know this is an older video, but thank you. I had to install a closet shelf this week with zero experience, and I really appreciated the full walkthrough and explanations.
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!! My Good Man. This Video saved my Bacon 🥓 Before putting this shelf up in my Sister's closet. I have forgotten ALL ABOUT the Toggle Bolts. I will be using them for the Entire build, minus the edges because of the brackets. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!
Excellent tutorial on mounting these shelves. I have these shelves in all the closets of my newly constructed home. I hope the original installer did as good a job. I hope to add a few additional shelves in the near future.
Wow! Thank you for this video and detailed instructions. My builder installed wire shelf fell and I've gotten several directions to change materials etc. Yours is the best buy far and I don't have to buy different shelving. Thank you again. 😊
Thank you so much for going step by step and explaining different ways to get to the end result; I am on a journey of installing closet shelves in my new house that came with absolutely zero shelving somehow, and I appreciate you going through everything In a manner of which I can easily follow along and reciprocate. 🙂🙂
Honestly prolly better it didn’t come with it because ours came with the wire shelves and all 3 ripped off the wall and only one had lot of weight but they only used the provided hardware and not into one stud
Same at my house. No shelves in any closet, laundry room and garage so I had been installing all sorts of configurations but I wanted to clarify a few points that this video helped with.
I trick for installing toggle bolts is to run the drill in reverse fast for just a second and the toggle will spin fast on and tighten to the wall rather then if you go in forward, it will spin off and end up at the bottom of the wall cavity….👍
That was a great, help. I wish I had known all, this before, I tried to remount my closet shelf! At,least I can do a more secure job of it now! You are a great teacher without being wordy, you get right to the point. Thank you😅
Yes, step by step was perfect. Ty. I wish u lived in my area. My mom always told me don't wait for anyone. U don't need a man u need homedepot. And, now I'll add TH-cam. But, ty sir.!
Great video. FYI - to avoid creating large craters in the drywall, if repairing or uninstalling, then make sure to remove the nail or screw from the plastic clip first. This relaxes the “anchor” and makes it easier to remove from the wall… I removed many of these from the closets to re-use in the garage. I was sure there’s a better way to install and toggle bolts seems to be the way to go if you need support where there is no stud. Thank you!
Thank you. Excellent video. I had watched someone else's video before yours and what I saw made me say,. 'No, I don't think so.' So, I looked at yours and that's exactly what I wanted to know. I wanted to know how to make the shelf as strong as I possibly could.
This was a great overview of this, I needed to repair an 8 foot section that had been overloaded and pulled out of the wall. One thing to note, I was going to use toggles for all the supports in order to space them evenly, that ended up being a failure. It was impossible for me to start all the toggles in the holes simultaneously and still seat the support brackets properly into the shelf due to the fact that they needed to swing into position and the angles were simply not working out. I ended up locating all the supports on studs, which was certainly a more robust solution but not as aesthetically pleasing as I originally intended. I ended up adding a couple more supports to balance things out. In any event, this was the perfect video to help me figure out what I needed to do to accomplish the repair, thank you!!!
Great video in detail will help a family member put back up a shelf in his closet that fell down because of weight. It was put using the anker type wall that easily fell out and made a hole bigger. Toggle bolt is the way to go.His house is built brand new, and I'm surprised the contractors use a cheap way to put the shelf up.
This video is spectacular. Im a soon to be single woman after 40 years of marriage and I am need to install several of these shelves. Without this video and I’ll this great detail I wouldn’t have been able to do it. Now to look at your notes so I know exactly what I need to purchase to complete this project.
Your instructions are the best! My wire shelf is safe and perfectly installed….you answered all my questions and more, especially the toggle bolt usage…..thank you for all the help😊
Great video. I'm glad I caught this. I had purchased all of the items to put a shelf in my daughters bedroom. Luckily, I did not put it up yet, because I love the toggle bolt concept.
Very good strong installation I would have done it exactly the same way my wife just called me that the shelving fell down in her closet unfortunately I Am 250 Mi away so I cannot fix it myself but I explained to her when the maintenance men come over to reinstall it exactly the way you did.
To start your voice is very nice, and in the way that you explain it is, is straight forward and to the point so consistent. I really appreciate you for making this video. Now if I had listened all the way through (instead of thinking oh I got this) I wouldn't have to be going back to the store to get the side wall brackets :+O. But I will get this done. lol Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video. Because of your clear explanation I easily installed 2 additional shelves in one of my closets today. Thanks again. This video was a life saver or at the very least a time saver.
Very helpful for you to specify what brand you are using. This looks like what I have. The painter took them down and now I have to figure out how to put them back.
This is a good video. These are a pain in the butt - the most expensive and most difficult DIY option. Especially if your walls are not plump or squares - so rare in closets.
Awesome video! I really appreciate how you clearly explained each step, reminded & provided links for the accessories and how you demonstrated why you would choose a toggle bolt. Thank you!!
Time lapse for the sawing lead me to believe I'd get 3 done in 3-4 hours. It can be a lot of sawing! The clips I got had almost no wiggle, so I had to modify the first shelf I did a touch. So a trick I did was to figure out that center hole by count etc. Mark it. Then put all 5 clips up for fit with the level on the shelf. Mark through the clips. Take down. Check for level. Correct a smidge. Then install as you did. No clip problems the rest of the way!
I really liked how concise he was with describing the options from it being a new install or fixing an existing shelf. I'm about to fix my shelf that has become weaker from the weight of clothing. When installed (new construction) they didn't use the studs...I'll be using the studs...I can use this video and follow it very easy.........Thank you so much.
Really great vid. I love how you walked us through every step in detail with very clear and simple explanations. I have to install some of these very soon in my pantry so this was super helpful. Thank you!
I have a manufactured home and the builders used this type of shelving in all the closets and in the pantry - cheap stuff .. as long as you don't hang heavy clothes on them or place heavy objects on the shelf, you're ok .. I've had to support them with 2x4's and am slowing replacing them as best I can .. I've even had to add masonite on them in the pantry to keep cans from tipping and small packaging from falling through.
Thank you, great instruction, very clear, lots of detail, good photography, key points repeated. A question... how would you install on an old plaster wall?
Listen, I still live at home, I don't need these tips. But, you are so helpful and seem like a great person. So, I'm subscribing, probably use this in like 3 years lol.
Thanks Douglas, here is another option as well if you would like a little more strength and ability to adjust the configuration. th-cam.com/video/lO0DMblbsIw/w-d-xo.html Best of luck on your project.
Because you asked about what was useful... I didn't have a full closetmaid kit, but it was my first time installing this sort of wire shelving. I've hung shelves before and will choose placement based on location of studs, but your emphasis on finding studs is likely well merited if shelves are full-on falling out. Drywall's just not made for the weight. The point I'd like to thank you for personally was how you set it up as just a single person. I'd been up on the ladder, trying to hunch up the shelf with my shoulder while looking at my level which was placed on the shelf arranged horizontally, trying to scribble into the nail hole with a pencil, and repeatedly smacking my head when the whole thing crashed down. Your sticking the level on the lip of the shelf and starting from the wall brackets made the second shelf much easier, take much less time, and result in less bruising. Thank you!
It’s like he knew that I was going to seek out his video because my “standard bolt failed” and now all of my closet clothes are on the floor :( Thanks for the informative video!
15:55 well well well. I was searching for the ‘newer’ support brackets that Closet Maid said was ‘somewhere’ on TH-cam. The newer supports have to be ‘forced’ back against the wall. 😮. I removed some of the material from between the 2 ‘tangs’ so that no force was placed on the wire in the front of the shelve. CM said to ‘push’ it back against the wall. That was the design stated the rep on the phone. ☎️ placing so much pressure on the parts isn’t what I call a ‘good design’. IDK about that! My way seemed better as only compression was on the support to the wall. No wires were injured 🤕 durning my installation. 😅
From personal experience, I can tell you that those plastic clips will eventually fail. It seemed to happen right at 20 years. Many aren't concerned about 20 years, but I like to do things even better than recommended. Even better are the metal clips they also sell, but these require 2 holes as the metal clips surround the shelf piece. They are called Concrete/Stud shelf clips, part number 75615. These do come with plastic sleeves for the screws that you place in your studs. We had 2 shelves fall, and before I had time to fix these with your molly bolt trick, the other 3 also collapsed. I wish I had seen the molly bolt trick first as I could have saved time using the same holes. Wall patching wasn't fun, and due to timing, I will have to wait on paint. Another item at the hardware store are scew in metal sleeves. They are rated around 40 lbs vs. the 70 of the molly bolts you mention. I came here to see you mount the shelving as the closetmaid has terrible instructions. I will use a combination of the concrete metal clips and the plastic clips in between as the studs are 16" on center; too far apart per manufacturer recommended spacing. So this will be one clip every 8 inches. I also am increasing the wall support by one more for each shelf than was initially installed by the builder. My reasoning on the extra support is that only one perpendicular wall is supporting the shelving, as the right side is open space. This is a utility room shelf install not spanning the entire wall width.
Thanks for the video and well-paced narration! Wonder if your drill machine can drill hole AND drive the screw into the stud at the same time. Usually, first a hole needs to be drilled into the stud, and then the screw to be driven into the hole. Probably, you have a different (powerful) drill/drive machine that does both tasks together. Also, what length of screws to use for the clip-on-stud? Thanks.
thank you! I followed all these tips and found studs wherever possible. Where I couldn’t I used toggle bolts. All was well until water started leaking from one of the toggle bolts. I must have hit a pipe?! What did I do wrong?
Thanks for the video. The hardware that comes with most kits are no good. Even though you tighten the toggle bolt, the drilled hole has to be bigger than the bolt and over time, as you load and unload the shelf it is going to wiggle and come loose. I much rather prefer an aluminum drywall anchors (rated for 50 lbs). If stud is not an option, I always use a metal drywall anchor. There is no need to pre-drill, looks neat and very strong.
Question: if the support is made to “hover” the wire, what support is it actually providing? All I can figure is that there is a little more support for pulling away from or pressing into wall, but if it was mounted above the rack (cupping the wire) wouldn’t it actually provide additional weight support?
Our house has these closet systems installed in 2007-2008 (new construction). Now in 2021, the brackets that support the rods have begun to break in front where they clip onto the wire shelves. I was able to buy replacement brackets at a home improvement store.

Even Home Depot?
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!

I am starting to like those Togglers more and more 💯
What? I missed that. Back to the video.
Best step by step closet installation
Thank you so much for this video. Because of your clear explanation I easily installed 2 additional shelves in one of my closets today. Thanks again. This video was a life saver or at the very least a time saver.

Thanks dude. Just had a shelf fall out as none of the screws were put in a stud. Such a shame. Ur video helped me secure it well. Now I can it on it🙂
Thanks 'i would like to save this video

Thanks! I found your video AFTER I put a big hole in the wall. Now that I've repaired the hole, I'm ready to tackle the shelves again!
Cheers for the video ! Super helpful
Doing a re install of this system for a lady and previous install was done all wrong
This is very educational 🙏
Brilliant! Great idea for using the toggle bolts! I’ve repaired many of these and you’re absolutely right about the ‘notorious’ phrase!
OMG you are an Angel… Knowledgeable and articulate. Thank you for a clear and easy to follow demonstration.
Happy to help!

Really great vid. I love how you walked us through every step in detail with very clear and simple explanations.

Thank you!
Very comprehensive and out the box. Thanks!🙏
It’s like he knew that I was going to seek out his video because my “standard bolt failed” and now all of my closet clothes are on the floor :(
Thanks for the informative video!
New sub here even didn't skip the ads that is how much I appreciated your know how!
Thank you for such a detailed job answered a few questions I had.
Thank you . Love your channel. I’m hanging 4 foot shelves today do this video was great.
Best of luck with the project!
This video was very helpful. I'm redoing my closet and your instruction gave me the skills to do it correctly. Thanks
Good video! One suggestion use a mud pan when drilling onto the wall to catch the drywall dust!
Good tip! Thanks Kirk 👍
Perfect clear and detailed step-by-step with options video. Keep doing your great work! 👍
I didn’t have side brackets. That is definitely helpful. Thank you!
Excellent. A little bit of know how helps bring a project to a much better conclusion. Thanks
how do you know if there may be wiring behind the sheet rock that the toggle bolt could hit?
Awesome video man! Very helpful.
Well done, feel confident now taking this on. Thanks,
Man I finally got it rite. Lol I’m ready to take all my closets apart and redo them all. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Nice saved me a big headache and money!
Thank you! This was the best video! Your details materials really helped.
Happy to help.
You really made this so easy to understand. It was very helpful!
Thanks.
Good tutorial.... I've gotten better at installing these shelves...
That was a great video! Question:- How can we work around the wire shelving’s on the wall while repairing water stain on the wall.
Great step-by-step details, really appreciate it!
You're very welcome!
What kind of blade/ saw did you use for cutting shelf, could be helpful for those of us who have need! Amazing tutorial. Thanks
Excellent tutorial! Clear and complete😊
Absolutely prodigious presentation! Thanks!
thank you! I followed all these tips and found studs wherever possible. Where I couldn’t I used toggle bolts. All was well until water started leaking from one of the toggle bolts. I must have hit a pipe?! What did I do wrong?
Thanks so much! You talked & demonstrated all I needed to know to hang those wire shelves. 🙏🏻🐰❣️
I have an older system from ~35 years ago that I am reinstalling. Some of the parts have changed in that timeframe, but this was helpful nonetheless.
Hmm, was going to use toggle bolts, these look cool not sure now.
Thanks this was a lifesaver! Appreciate all the detail!!
Happy to help 👍
Superb job Scott and I really enjoy your easy DIY projects!
Thanks Keith!
Thank you for creating this video!
