I want to thank the creator for making an easy to follow video on this. My father passed before he was able to teach me everything I needed to know about making a house a home and our wire closet has collapsed twice now! Thank you ❤
Suggestions, paint the wood before installation . . . if you put a shelf in, make sure you position the rod such that allows enough room for clothes hangers to go on and off with ease . . . good video thanks
Thanks. Drilling screws to sides makes sense. One tip, the space for hangers is too narrow (between rod and shelf lip). I would suggest adding 3" to top if you are going to have a shelf going across.
Great informative video. This' just what I was looking for. My whole closet collapsed; rod and shelf. I'm motivated now to get started. Thanks. p.s. I first saw one of your CRV videos for replacing brake bulb lights .
Excellent. The house that I just moved into has those wire shelves that are on different levels in the closet and as far as I am concerned useless. This is just what I need, off to the hardware store. Thanks.
Thank you very much for sharing your tutorial videos. Your video on swapping out a pedestal sink for a vanity guided me. I was wondering if I can use 3/4 x 4 cedar board if I can't get my hands on pine? Thank you.
Great information, but here’s an embarrassing question 😀- How do I add a shorter rod/section for dresses? know I’ve seen this done, but I don’t know how to attach the “dividing board” to the wall behind it? Would I use the same concept you used here (attach the vertical dividing board to a horizontal section that was previously attached to the wall)? A design like this- Divider Rod for. . Rod #1. Board. Dresses. Wall --------l---------------l Rod #2. I. I --------I. Dresses. I I ----------------------- Floor
What do you do when no studs are possible even in the corners? I'm working with a closet that is breaking my brain, as it seems to have boards on the sides just nailed into the hollow drywall. No corner studs. No anchors. But it has held up for almost 40 years?! I just need to install more shelves and I have no idea how the old boards are secured to the wall properly.
@@getitdonehomerepair I am close to getting a portable x-ray machine to see what the heck is going on. I put super thin nails into the wall at every point where the existing boards have nails, and there are no studs. The only place it might be nailed into studs are the back 2 corners, because the fronts of the boards don't extend all the way to the opening where another frame would be.
If rod falls down and need to replace socket, how do you get the rod to fit again since the rod will be too long until the socket is screwed in and cannot screw in the socket after placing rod in it? Without cutting. Thanks!
Great video! How long should the screws be that are securing the pole holders in the 2x4? I'm assuming less than 2" so it doesn't go all the way through the 2x4 to the wall behind?
What is the purpose of angling the screws down? I noticed in the beginning of this video the first few screws were angled down just wondered why. Thank you!
question sir. so my closet has left side dry wall right side is brick. main wall for the center board has no stud because behind the wall is brick maybe 6 inches from it. weird structure of a house. but what would be good supports i DO NOT want the middle of the board bending over time because of lack of support.
I have a question. I made an assembly just as you did. I used a metal rod with a shelf and the support brackets on each side. But I also put 2 support brackets in the middle of the wall, do I really need the brackets in the middle?
At time stamp 7:54, you skipped over measuring to make sure the rod is low enough from the shelf that you get the hanger out and rod is far enough from back of closet the hanger will hang straight
I love this video! Can I ask you when the brackets would come into place? We are going to do this in a really long walk in closet. Can you give me some suggestions for that?
Does the cleat size matter. I am redoing my sons closet. And saved the cleats. But was hoping I could cut them length wise to be 1.5 to 2 inches vs the 5.5 inches it it’s in thickness
I have a closet that is 8 feet wide. If I want to put a shelf across it, will installing these beams on 3 sides be enough to support it? Or should I put some kind of support in the middle?
My daughters' closet rod and shelf collapsed . This is exactly the video I needed to figure out how to fix it. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help! Don’t forget to like and subscribe

thank you youtubers for making our lives easier
Happy to help!
Thankyou for your video. I had problems finding the stud along the wall and your tip to drill on an angle saved me. Just completed two rod installs.
Suggestions, paint the wood before installation . . . if you put a shelf in, make sure you position the rod such that allows enough room for clothes hangers to go on and off with ease . . . good video thanks
Thanks for the good advice. You would need room between shelf and hangers.
How much room would you say to have?
That’s great wisdom. You don’t want to be finishing the material post mounting.
@@tjkong4381 1 1/2” -2” should work.

Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for to hang clothes in my laundry room and add storage. Great instructions!

Thank you for making this easy to understand for a non handy person.😊
Thanks. Drilling screws to sides makes sense. One tip, the space for hangers is too narrow (between rod and shelf lip). I would suggest adding 3" to top if you are going to have a shelf going across.
Thanks for answering all the questions. Very informative video. Love your new Yorker accent 😊
So nice of you
Thanks for your straightforward tutorial on how to hang a closet hanging rod and shelf
Glad it was helpful!
The actual use for my great grandfather’s metal hack saw!!! ❤
Great instructions and make it look very doable for the regular schmuck like me thank you.
Glad you liked it
What an Excellent and a fluid instruction! Im guessing the boards used were pine 1" by 4". I hope so. That's what I'm buying. Thanks.
Thank you! I was happy that you answered why you went in at an angle for the screws, you read my mind!
Great hack. I watched your video early this morning, and was done by late morning. It is solid and practical. Thank you
I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for this video can’t wait to do this to both of my closets!
THANK YOU × 10... This exactly what I needed to know in order to reinforce a closet rod💖

This is exactly what I need, TY for sharing!
is it wise to use PL glue ?to put in the wood before screw into the drywall?
Love it what size of wood is that so I can know what to buy
The shelf is 3/4 inch x 12 inch pine and the supports are 3/4 x 3 or 4 inches.
This is exactly what I needed!! Thank you!!!

I would say that if it has been up for 40 years it must be nailed or screwed into a stud somewhere.

Too funny!
What were the measurements for the wood pieces that you used including the shelf 1 ×4 ?
The wardrobe trunk is simple but a little tricky. for some reason, many people, myself included, installed it unbalancedly.
Thank you for putting thi together. It is of immense benefit to me. E seun pupo😊😊👍👍

Can you send me a picture of the problem?
Very informative! I truly think that I can tackle this project!
You can do it!
Great video, but my only question is: how do you install the shelf on top? Do you use wood glue or do you screw/nail it to the wood below?
Actually the shelf just lays on top. Good question.
Great video! How long should the screws be that are securing the pole holders in the 2x4? I'm assuming less than 2" so it doesn't go all the way through the 2x4 to the wall behind?
Yes 1.5-2 inches.Thanks for watching.
What is the purpose of angling the screws down? I noticed in the beginning of this video the first few screws were angled down just wondered why. Thank you!
Actually the were angled so that they would be sure to screw into the wall/closet studs. Good question.
Can I ask you what a handyman would charge to do this exact thing? Approximately. Thank you!
How do you identify where the beams and studs are to secure the wood with a drywall screw for the shelve to go on top?
You will need to use a stud finder. Take a look in my Amazon store below the video to see what they look like,

If the rod and shelf are long it is a good idea to have at least one support
Can I just use the butterfly on place of the wood
Great video! Your step by step instructions are just what I needed for my project. Thank you! gina
Glad it was helpful! Nice job Gina
Great tip, thanks for posting.
Great video, very detailed thank ya . I'm from Maine , saw it on the hat and got excited 😁
Awesome! Thank you! I love Maine I'm up there every few months.

So helpful! Thank you so much for posting this!
You're so welcome!
Wow. Very creative of you.
Would a pocket hole jig also work for the angled nails?
Ye it may work.
I noticed you never used drywall anchors. Would it be stronger if I used anchors or it wouldn’t make a difference?
Good question. Drywall anchors are ok for light duty but screwing directly into the wood that is screwed into a stud is stronger.
Cool 😎 👍helpful thanks 😊
But man, life is so much easier with an impact driver 💪 try it. Old school.....doing stuff right👌💪 💪
0.75 speed and you sound exactly like jeff goldbloom! thanks for the video :)
Interesting!
How many inches from the wall the rod usually go?🎉
Excellent video. Is that a 2x6?
No actually it is 3/4 by 3 or 4 inches. Good question.
I love this video! Can I ask you when the brackets would come into place? We are going to do this in a really long walk in closet. Can you give me some suggestions for that?
Excellent video and very helpful tips!
Thanks for watching!
If there is no stud to screw the board into, can I use a wall anchor?
Yes you can but it will not hold as well as if you screw into the studs. You should have studs in the corners.
so simple and so smart. Perfection!
Thanks for watching. I'm happy to help.
Would you paint the boards before screwing into the wall?
That is personal preference but it would be easier to paint before you install it. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to sub.
Does the cleat size matter. I am redoing my sons closet. And saved the cleats. But was hoping I could cut them length wise to be 1.5 to 2 inches vs the 5.5 inches it it’s in thickness
Yes you can cut them down but I would make them at least 2-2.5 inches. Thanks for watching.
How do we know if there will be a beer behind the wood?
Simply the Best.
Thanks for watching. Don't forget to sub.
Is it possible to use drywall anchors that hold significant amount or weight for the rod?
It may hold for a short time but not permanently.
How do you find beams in the wall?
You use a stud finder. I have them in my Amazon store below the video.
Are homes in Fl made with steel studs, and if so? I'm at a standstill because of this issue just a novice here.
I have a closet that is 8 feet wide. If I want to put a shelf across it, will installing these beams on 3 sides be enough to support it? Or should I put some kind of support in the middle?
Thanks for watching.
Big help thank you
Another ? What color should paint the wood. White, color of wall.
That is personal preference.
What size drill bit do you use?
About 1/16 - 1/8
Prayer answered, thank you
You are so welcome
What thickness is the board please?
The wood for the shelf is 3/4 inch x 12 Inch pine and the support is 3/4 pine x 3 inch. I hope this helps.
@@getitdonehomerepair thank you! Is that nominal or something? Would that mean I need a 1" board (which I think is actually 3/4"?)
Well..the only question I had is how far from the back wall to the vent or end of the poll socket..and I didn’t get an answer 🤷🏼♂️
What thickness is the wood support?
The wood is 3-4 inches
Very informative. Thank you
What type of wood is used?
Just pine will do.
Thank you
Welcome!
How to do this with metel studs?
You will need to pre drill the studs first and then install the screws. Thanks for watching.
Are these 1x4? Or 2x4?
They are 3/4" by 4 ".Thanks for watching.
What's size is the rod
Thanks! Exactly what I needed, and so well explained.
Glad it helped!
Great tutorial 👌🏾 thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Technically, I would call the vertical stud(s), instead of beam behind the dry wall.
Thanks for your input . You are correct they are studs. Thanks for watching.
What is the size of the wood ?
3/4 x 12 inch pine for the shelf and 3/4 x 3 inch for the support
I'm going to do it .
Is that steel rod pretty firm? I’m debating if I need a center support for a 6ft run.
You should have a support bracket every 32” (every other stud).
At 6' or longer, I would definitely suggest a center support. Clothes weigh a lot more in bulk than you would guess.
very detailed, and helpful. thank you!
