I got one after using it twice for about 6minutes total it was useless blunt and i dont have the correct size file to sharpen it. Total waste of 16 pounds
A colleague of mine was using one of these on these on site to shape a piece of timber. It's a really good thing he was wearing gloves because when he ran it through the two of his fingers I didn't have to scratch around on the floor looking for them, they were hanging in neat little pouches by the remaining threads of the gloves. Surgeon was able to reattach them but with the knuckles destroyed his fingers are half an inch shorter and don't flex anymore. This tool is seriously dangerous and the damage it does to flesh and bone cannot be underestimated. Definitely the most gruesome injury I've had to treat on site. Please do not treat these blades casually and use all of extra guards if you ever need to use one!
As a young man trying to learn, this seems like a brilliant tool. Whats the sharpening routine like? The teeth look quite irregular, so i cant work that out... Maybe like a chainsaw blade, file each tooth?

@@MrFran007 umm… you do realise this is a disc for wood carving? It’s not your standard inox or stone cutting blade. It’s meant for exactly what your saying it’s not?
I worked for a company that made log cabins for a short time. This was used to carve out the end of one log so it could meet up to the round outside of another log. Every log is different (not perfectly round) and to get the "seam" to match up was an artform.
I use this carving disc as a wood sculptor. I removed my grinder guard for better maneuverability, as well as the grinder secondly handle, again for more flexibility. As a carpenter for 40 years and a chainsaw fanatic I will agree that this attachment is dangerous, however most of my tools are. The most dangerous attachment in my shop is myself. Respect the risk, keep your fleshy bits away from the moving parts, and keep your tools in good working order, you must be in control. Bottom line, if your scared, if you lack the confidence…..use something else that your ok with. And yes, I still have all of my fingers!!
Dude, you shouldn't play with toys you don't know squat about. I have a 4 piece set. They are wonderful for what they are made for. ❤ it's a carvers tool, you know, them little bears from logs and such.
What a tool, the operator not the carver, totally clueless. These have been around for years in one form or another. A little research and he could have found out how to use it safely. Some PPE would have have helped too.
Agreed 100%. Harbor Fright Lancelot knock-off. This asshat has no clue how close he came to gutting himself. We've known this "high-end" finish carpenter/boatwright for years on different billionaire jobsites out here in Hawaii. Kind of a running joke since his end product is quite excellent, but he works at a williy nilly, no plan/prep pace like this guy. He's missing THREE fingers, ....all from different accidents. I was there for the last one, ....or more precisely the most recent. Believe it or not he yelled, "...oh nooooo! Not again!" It's now a jobsite meme anytime someone mentions him. His name is now hyphenated with that. Now sporting a true Leper Colony "Molokai Shaka".
I was actually thinking at first why is this abomination a thing, a grinder moves way faster than a chainsaw moves those type of blades. Was thinking wouldnt a skill saw style blade work better for cutting wood? And then I saw how nicely it carved, I'm impressed, I thought it would be rough as.
When it says "Use in any direction" it means you can cut with wood grain or across the wood grain. You have way too many negative remarks before actually using the product or knowing what it is used for. I find it very annoying.
I think it means that you can flip the disk around so that the chain is spinning in reverse or that you can remove that chain and flip the chain around to expose a second set of cutting teeth
@@axtra92 no PPE whatsoever, shorts are the worst pants, short sleeve shirt, just... everything is wrong. you should wear a long sleeve shirt, preferably a leather jacket, leather gloves, jeans, steel toed boots, a face shield, and safety glasses. when one of those wheels decided to go the "Rapid Unplanned Disassembly" route, they can launch a piece of a grinding wheel THROUGH your abdomen.
I have used this tool exactly once a few years ago. I ended up in the emergency room a few minutes later. Anti kickback action my ass. DO NOT TRY TO TO CUT A CHANNEL OR GROOVE WITH THIS TOOL. It will flutter between the side walls violently when you least expect it, jump out of the groove and liquefy everything in its path. It caught my left arm and right palm before I dropped it. Feel free to purchase and use it, but be very aware of its destructive ability. It has lounged around in my toolbox sneering at me ever since our first/last encounter.
@@sentry8992 I was trying to carve a head on a piece of wood. Once I started carving the chin and the neck I tried to do too much too fast by plunging the tool under the chin to the depth of the neck and the tool told me it wasn't happy with my method. Totally my fault. I need to build some metal vambraces if I ever plan to use this tool again.
@@michaelsemenchuk3056 I'm an artist as well. Based on your description, a saw zall would have been a great choice to make a series of relief cuts first. The saw zall would have quickly got to the depth from chin to the neck, then you could have come back with the carving disc. Wherever possible, always make a series of relief cuts first. Also there's 2 other carving disc's available on the market that does very similar carving operations but do not utilize the chain mechanism that could get caught or bind up in the material. The other 2 designs are easier to work with. Amazon sells a 9 disc set for 30 bucks. The set includes all the different styles of carving discs.
As a wood carver I used one for a while. It was effective and i liked the results, but every time I used it when I would put it down i would have to kind of meditate and think about how i had used it. I also used angle grinders for years in construction for rebar. Then my angle grinder jumped with just a sanding disc and bit in to my forearm. Had it been the chainsaw disc I would have likely had permanent damage. This thing is scary and there are belt driven grinder attachments that extend the cutter away from your hands and if it does kick, the belt stops it spinning
How did the angle grinder jump and catch your forearm? Were you using it with one hand? An angle grinder should always be used with the handle and two hands.
I used this blade about 10 years ago. I cut off my left index finger and the next two fingers next to it were cut half way through. Three operations and four weeks in hospital as a result. Take my advice. Throw that thing away and never use an angle grinder to cut wood. Be warned. 😬😬😬😬
That's because you were using it wrong like this moron in the video. I've raced dirt bikes for the last 30 years and lost the function of my right leg (almost lost the whole leg) on one in 5 minutes on a test ride being careless. Point is, I don't blame the bike, I still ride. And I certainly don't tell everyone else to throw theirs away. What's the difference? Please tell me. Shit happens sometimes. Be better at it is all I can say...
Craig Wheeless - I think it could be more dangerous. I have come to the conclusion that you pretty much need two hands on a chainsaw to maneuver/ operate. However a grinder can easily be used with only one hand on the tool and the other holding the piece of wood.
Had you bothered to open the entire package there are directions for use inside. The only thing I saw that was dangerous was the tool trying to use it. When set up correctly and used for its intended purpose its just as safe as any other tool.
I used the King Arthur's Tools carving disc (the Lancelot) years ago for sculpture. It's very useful for shaping wood. If I remember correctly they recommended turning the guard on the grinder to a different position. Occasionally, the grinder would kick, especially if I was careless with it, so I always kept a careful grip, and I always wore gloves and a face shield. I probably should have worn leather/kevlar protective clothing. I think it could have cut through flesh like butter.
It's always nice to wear gloves. Maybe the grinder grabs it but its always a good idea. If you don't know work safety you have no buisness using any tool.
An apprentice using a grinder had their hand mangled because her glove touched the wheel. She doesn't work anymore. Gloves are not a good idea with spinning tools. Imagine it catching on a lathe.
Try using the proper apparel when working in the shop. At the end of the day you’ll be in one piece and your loved ones will love for that. Be safe my friend.
@@user-wp5fe8ec6l welded one together with sheet metal and a chainsaw blade, did an awesome carving on a 30' long bar counter top, started trying to use existing tools like a chainsaw and none worked as well and often ended up being more dangerous for the work we were attempting, this tool (our version of it) actually worked amazingly and did the whole counter really fast.
It's made for carving in curves and round edges when you're carving stuff when you want to take a lot of material but you want to keep a certain shape it's a really good tool to have if you're carving wood especially if you're doing animals and people it works awesome
My husband of 41 years passed away this past August. I have been looking over his tool collection and trying to decide which ones I should keep. I came across his die grinder but had no idea what it is used for which is why I am here. I am very impressed with what you were able to do with your new attachment. My mind was racing with the possibilities for it's use. I will keep the die grinder and tomorrow pay a visit to Harbor Freight for that attachment. Thank you for sharing. And yes I agree it has the ability to do a wicked amount of damage if used without the proper precautions, I will use it with all due respect.
i literally just saw that like 3 days ago. He was carving a large piece of wood and the chainsaw bits dug into the wood, and kicked backed with a vengence
You never do that with your circular saw? I know it's sketchy for grinders, when people do that with cutoff blades, but I think thats actually the purpose of this blade.
There's a picture out there on the internet of a guy with a similar saw deeply lodged in his sternum. Please dear god don't put a circular saw blade on a grinder.
My dad has actually used this before and used it to carve a wooden axe for my nephew but while he was making it with that attachment for the angle grinder the table he was working on was metal and he lowered it a bit too much and it caught the edge of the table which yanked the grinder out of his hand while it was on.. he wrecked the axe and cut his hand but luckily it wasn’t anything crazy he now knows to not use something that looks like a bad idea
Absolutely, I thought the same thing. The man has never worked with steel/ grinding disks, It's like he's only ever used his grinder to cut, using thin cut-off disks.
You’ve never heard of Lee Valley? Well... they are a pretty well-known and respectable company that sells high quality woodworking and gardening tools amongst other things. They sell a very similar item. And as someone else here has indicated, the only thing dangerous here is the guy who has no idea how to use it (and had never seen one before - REALLY?? You never saw this type of tool before?). I guess the peg board full of tools is a a Zoom background.

The guy has no clue. The tool is just fine.
Mark Hunter he's the type of guy who skips through all of the instructions and gets confused why it's not working as advertised.
@@Neishy4AGTE That's not true. Chainsaws can go up to 14k rpm, while most grinders won't go more than 8k. Those battery powered ones even less.

Why were you using it like that? It's a carving disc. Not a cutting disc. Cutting channels sound like a operation best accomplished using a router.
@@michaelsemenchuk3056
I'm an artist as well.
In the proper hands it's a VERY useful carving tool...in your hands it makes me nervous!
Be warned. 😬😬😬😬
Mork did the chain disengage and whip across the fingers?
Whoa
Yes, please tell us how it happened. I’ve owned 3 chainsaws and this doesn’t seem more dangerous

That is true, almost any tool can be dangerous if not used properly.
RDAllen you obviously don’t know how to use it
I used the King Arthur's Tools carving disc (the Lancelot) years ago for sculpture.
You have no business using that tool without gloves or properly adjusting the guard.
Kinda bothers me he's wearing shorts but he complains about being worried about the chain coming off
It's always nice to wear gloves. Maybe the grinder grabs it but its always a good idea. If you don't know work safety you have no buisness using any tool.
