      Mate I was doing some pad work with a pal. giving it 10% to work on technique. He decides to up the strength but tell me he's going hard while the punch was already flying. The way my forearm snapped back it tore something in my elbow. It's been sore for weeks now.
      Could you do a video on how NOT to injure yourself in training by doing stupid things... and maybe what to do after you've did a stupid thing.
      Brilliant episode as always dude. Keep the high punches low and the low punches high.

    Thank you my fellow boxer and champion Tony Jeffries. I am a competitive boxer that trains 6 days a week- sometimes 5. Each day for me includes running/jogging for 52 minutes (8 min/per mile pace) and boxing 🥊 training in the late afternoon or evening. That’s for me a total of 10-12 sessions a week. That’s definitely enough! Thank you because especially as competitive boxers 🥊🔥🥇that rest for 1 or 2 days off makes us stronger and definitely fight ready. I had to watch and save this video to my boxing playlist because I am a very disciplined boxer. Thank you, too much doesn’t mean better. We need to rest. God bless you, Champ and thank you. 😎🔥🥇

    Hey Tony, I dont usually comment on videos but finding your youtube has made a world of difference for me, I was in a very negative mindset and struggling to find motivation to change the way I felt my life was going and then I began training, I live far from the city and dont have many options for gyms and training partners where im at, I started looking for help training online and your tips and insights have really motivated me to improve myself and have a real confidence in my ability. I watch you daily and absorb whatever tips you can offer. Ive entered a 2-day toughman tournament in mid february for my first amateur fight and have been training around 3 months already with your help. Looking forward to more videos, Your doing more for my boxing than anyone else. Ill give you a shout out when I win the prize money for my weight class for sure. Any chance you could post a video about precision work on a standing reflex (or cobra) bag? Also, Im 5'11" - 135lbs and most my opponents are between 5'5" and 5'8", Any tips on maintaining range and fighting shorter opponents?

    Thank you, Tony. Great info as always.
    If I may humbly add some things as a 50 year old that just had his hip replaced and is probably going to have the other one replaced.
    Protect your joints. As Tony said, it depends on your goals. Just know, repetitive movements over time wear out joints. Focus on mobility, not just flexibility, when you're young. Specialization comes at a cost. Train bilaterally. It will help with your skills and will help prevent imbalances. Work on the accessory muscles. Condition all your connective tissue for strength, durability, flexibility, and bounce. Be careful about too much heavy bag training.
    If you want to be a champ, that's great. Just know if you don't take care of your body when you're young, you will most likely pay a price later. I hope this helps someone.
    Edit: Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition

      You talked about joints, man, my left shoulder six months ago just crapped out on me six months ago. I was focused on improving lead hook for months and one day I couldn't lift my left arm. I have minimized the amount of reps that involve my left shoulder since but the pain is still there. I'm 51 BTW.

      @CyclistChris 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I had both my hips replaced at 20 and 21, and the key things I note above that are both pre and post-hip injury are mobility and flexibility. These things are so key to the recovery side as well. I have still got terrible flexibility as I didn't get any post replacement physio, and was basically given crutches and told don't bend to 90 degrees for 8 weeks.

    Great video! I’ve found that when it comes to training there is a lot of great general guidelines but you need to listen to your body a lot as well and do what’s best for you and your lifestyle. Personally I train to be a better boxer, not necessarily to compete but I want to be a better skilled fighter. I like doing 3 big sessions a week including heavy bag, shadow boxing, power shots/skill work, strength work and roadwork and then on the other 4 days just do some light shadow boxing for technique and don’t overwork myself. I used to split the big stuff over 5 days but I found that to not allow enough recovery between sessions and my current regime is doing great for me! Thanks again for super valuable information and motivation

    I'm 52 years old and have kept this regiment for the last 10 years, at least.
    On the heavy bag...Monday thru Thursday; 4, 5 minute rounds, 1 minute rest in between
    Fridays, 5-5 minute rounds, 1 minute rest inbetween
    Saturday, Sunday, and any holiday time off; 12, 3 minute rounds, 1 minute rest in between.
    I will mix in an aqua bag and double end bag...but use them alongside the heavy bag.
    I never spar. I never take a single day off...

    I spar almost every day, but the type of sparring varies dramatically. Headgear full 3 minute round heavy sparring, maybe once a month if that. Some low power focusing on touch landing combos on helmets, shoulders and body sparring once or twice a week and then point sparring most days. Point sparring is just touch, point reset. It's a 99% defensive minded sparring style - this is a bit like a Mauy Thai style of sparring, I did it growing up in kickboxing and my main sparring partners background is Mauy Thai so it's playful and focusing on just feeling range, keeping your feet where you need them etc. It's still exhausting physically after a good few rounds but it's so soft you could probably do it without any gloves on, we're just tapping each other. We're lucky enough to be able to afford 3 hour sessions so it's not detracting from our core work for that day :) If your goal in the gym always is to learn and imrpove, you don't need to put your body through it's paces every day

    Hello sir I started watching your videos before I was in the boxing gym and it helped me a lot so I wanted to tell and ask you that is it enough or should I do more than my training so, that's what I usually do 45 minutes of running on the first day of the week (Sat) by the end of the week I run 1 hour after that I do some stretching and exercise around 12-16 mints then 4 rounds of shadow boxing each round is 4-7 mints long (based on the day of the week. for example on sat I do 4 mints and on Thursday 8 or sometimes 7 mints) first round is just to work on my 1 2, left jab and right hand then the second round is 4 punch including hooks uppercuts straights 4 punches combination, etc. In the third round, it's footwork like almost everything defensive, ducking, head movement. everything and the last round is short around 1 or 1 and a half mint this one is for speeding up constantly throwing punches and then bag so, I like to ask you do I have to increase anything more in this and can you plz tell me anything more that I or anyone can do in shadow boxing.

    • @stephenellis6601
      @stephenellis6601 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Hey Charlie, I'm not Tony but thought I lend my help. I'm a personal trainer and Martial artist so I have a bit of experience with this.
      I recommend separating the boxing and hypertrophy session by 4-6 hours. Keep volume in mind, as it only takes 10 sets (hard) per week per muscle group, to elicit a muscle growth response. This is just starting number, you may need more or less, but keep in mind that the biceps, anterior delta, pecs etc, get alot of work with boxing. So a focus of the posterior (lats, mid back, rear delts) would go a long way for health, balance, and a more symmetrical physique.
      I hope this helps a bit.
