I think the cons for FluentU are actually a plus for me. - I'm patient with waiting to speak until I have enough vocabulary (maybe equivalent to completing A2 level) and have become acclimated to the accent and flow of the language. It's a tool in the toolbox, not a be-all-end-all app. - Speech recognition tools don't work well for me, since I'm hearing impaired (since birth) and that affects my voice. I tried with Rosetta Stone in English (native language) as a control test, and pretty much failed speaking according to the tool. - Maybe it's because I'm an older learner (GenX here), but I hate modern UI. I do love how watching the videos, especially if it has comprehensible visual cues, (and the option to have captions - can you turn one or both on/off individually?) has exercises and explanations AFTER the video is done, as well as video topics. This is how I like to learn (I'm a visual and analytical learner), not gamey "Fill in the blanks", "Unscramble the word", "Connect the words", "Multiple Choice (with unintended process of elimination - looking at you Rosetta Stone)", "Whack-a-mole" (click on the correct word that's falling down from the screen) without having any prior context. That would be like if I were back in school (the 1990s) and only used the workbooks (it had exercises like that, which, ironically, was homework) instead of the textbook. The biggest thing I'd like in an ideal app would be to have a progress page where you can analyze vocabulary you've learned, reference which videos taught what vocabulary or grammar point, and has clearly defined levels (like CEFR levels) and vocabulary/grammar lists for each level from A1 to C2. My biggest con personally is that there's only 9 languages. Having stories/audiobooks to read/hear and learn vocabulary/grammar from would be a big plus, but there's other tools like ReadLang for that.
Yes! You're right! There is no tools to improve conversation, not even to improve pronunciation. Although to improve listening comprehension is great in my opinion.
An excellent review of the Structures, processes and content of FluentU . In Summary this application is best used as an important supplement, rather than a comprehensive language learning tool.
Thank you! I never knew that I am a visual learner, but I guess I am, so I'm going to give FluentU a try! It will be just one tool in my Spanish-learning toolbox.
The huge fail is the app does not support landscape mod. I want to do this on an iPad. You have to hold the iPad vertical…which is ridiculous for watching videos. This is a deal breaker for me.
Thanks for continuing to make awesome videos! There are so many language learning apps nowadays it’s nice to have a place to find honest information about them.
I didn't know FluentU had a subscription model. It looks cool, but with all the other apps and programmes out there I'm seeing on this channel, I'm not sure this would be my first choice. I'll check out the site again, tho
Thank you for such a great review, I am currently trying to find several different methods and this is a great review to help me decide without wasting money.
I'd never heard of this platform before - thank you so much for the detailed review! Especially as I'm trying to evaluate which app(s) would work best for me. Great work!
Fluentu have no fluency activities! Interesting. NOT having a speech recognition tool is good news. None of them work. Try using them as a native speaker and they'll find errors. Case closed. Thanks for the review.
Agreed! I'm hearing impaired, so that makes it even worse (my voice has a "hearing impaired accent"). Even then, there's multiple dialects (like how y and ll are pronounced in various Spanish speaking countries).
Thanks for the review. Sounds like a great course but expensive. I get the feeling there’s a ‘pathway’ that would swap between the strengths of different apps at different stages of learning - ie fluentu May be good to get early comprehension and then move on to a different app for speech, then another for grammar etc - dipping into each strength and moving on to the next level via a different app. Perhaps you could consider what the ‘perfect progression’ may be…?
Definitely their framework is right for me but my family and I have been pretty low on money right now so we can't really use FluentU even though it'll help with my major :(
6:20 thank you, sincerely. I can not find a good conversational course. my wife is Korean, and I learned korean 30 years ago. We speak "konglish" together. that is korean and English mixed. we can communicate, but that is not enough to convince immigration. she needs to speak English better. can you guide us to a good conversational course?
Useful review - thanks! I'm hoping to pair FluentU with Hello Chinese, and supplemental flash cards and videos from Yimin Chinese...damn...a lot of work to impress the server at my favorite Chinese restaurant! And yes, I'm happy to use your link to sign up. I was going to sign up anyway.
Thank you. I actually came here looking for a way to access the app freely :( I live in a country where there's no credit cards nor e-paying. Could you please help me by providing me a premium account or maybe by suggesting another method that might work for me? Thank you again.

I would recommend checking out Pimsleur and Rocket Languages. They're the best apps for conversational development.

Haha! Great reason :) Thanks for watching!
Very helpful! What would be a good compliment to FluentU that has the speech practice? Is there an AI speech practice app?
The FluentU's method might work for German.
So then what learning language app is good for conversation??
Rocket Languages and Pimsleur!
If I was to learn a language, It would be mandarin.
Thank you.
I actually came here looking for a way to access the app freely :( I live in a country where there's no credit cards nor e-paying. Could you please help me by providing me a premium account or maybe by suggesting another method that might work for me?

Funny, I only actually want to learn how to read.
same lol since there's no one speak Spanish here in my country and we're far away from latinos and hispanics but I'm in love with this language
