[110] Alcohol Ink Art Tutorial

- This wispy alcohol ink abstract is done using Ranger / Tim Holtz alcohol ink colors Vineyard and Slate, along with Jacquard Pinata brass for the metallic gold color. It is on Legion brand heavyweight 9 inch by 12 inch yupo. I used 99% isopropyl alcohol, my Revlon styling brush hairdryer, on cool, with the brush attachment removed, and my Foredom variable speed food pedal to help control the airflow from the dryer, mostly starting and stopping the air. I hope you get some useful tips from this and enjoy watching it!

I have the Ranger glass table top. I use cheap baby blankets instead of puppy pads or paper towels. They are washable and reusable. I got 4 for $10.00 at Walmart.

The amount of alcohol is subjective and it can be a dance looking for the right balance. Humidity/weather, the amount of ink on the surface...it all plays in and what works today may not work tomorrow or a month from now. Every artist learns by experimenting and getting a feel for everything and like you said, we don't always nail it perfectly every time.

Lol My husband is a contractor, so we travel around quite a bit. Western North Carolina is our actual home and where most of our family is at. We thought we would be there longer this time, but at least this won’t be another almost 3 years away from home! Maybe I can stay sane until June when we should be heading back to NC for a at least a few months.

Until the hubby retires, I’m not sure we are going to be firmly ensconced anywhere for more than a few months lol. I was hoping to be home in NC for longer, but unless we win the lottery (yeah, right lol) life on the road pretty frequently will continue for a few more years. Can’t say any of us like it, but it is what it is and it keeps me in art supplies lol.

What safety precautions should I use for the fumes of the alcohol? what do you use? love the colors!
Thank you for the compliment! As far as safety precautions go, a respirator using at least P-100 filters will filter out the fumes. Regular face masks, even the N-95 ones, won’t do it. The filters have to be rated for vapors. Some people also use nitrile gloves and even safety goggles if their respirator isn’t a full face one. I have to admit that I rarely use these precautions unless I am working on a large painting using a lot of alcohol because I work in a very well ventilated room. I would highly advise the respirator if you don’t have excellent ventilation where you paint at or if you have any breathing conditions that the fumes could worsen. It’s always a personal choice, but you can never go wrong with protecting your health, especially if you aren’t sure your ventilation is good enough.
