- I've wanted to make this video for a little while now since it seemed like a lot of fun to do. Meso and I created a BIONICLE set waves Tier List and I wanted to show you all where I ranked everything. Feel free to disagree and show me your lists! Thank you and I hope you enjoy!

In my opinion, summer 06 would be an automatic S. Nuparu inika and Brutaka are my favorite Lego sets ever.
I'm huge on the Makuta of 2008. Easily the most unique of the lot is Kirka, but for me Vamprah steals the show. He's a perfect set in my opinion because his inspiration is captured beautifully, yet he still looks and feels like a Bionicle villain. With the Makuta aesthetic drawing the species closer to the appearance of Rahi than we've previously seen, the introduction of a new torso prefab, and fully embracing the advantages of the Inika build without the disadvantages of being clone sets, the 2008 Makuta are the epitome of the set design standardization we've come to appreciate from 2006 to 2009.
Am I the only one who thinks the tier list looks like it's flipping me off sideways?

While I understand the critique for the Hordika designs, I feel it's an inconsistent point. Their toa Metru forms before them were also clones with different colors, masks, and weapons. If you grayscaled them before adding their masks and weapons, they'd look identical. But honestly, I don't find a problem with that. The consistency makes them feel unified. The Toa Mata and Nuva were quite similar as well (although not as much as the Metru and Hordika), but at the end of the day, that was kind of the point. They're meant to be a team and have that visual unity. Just my opinion
one thing the toa metru do that the hordika don't is the variation in height between the toa, nokama and nuju being the tallest, with whenua being the smallest. The hordika all have the exact same proportions with little to set them a part other than weapons and masks.
Hordika masks look like hippos, just a bad design.
I don’t understand how you can be dismissive of the piraka for being clone sets when their spines giving them all a drastically different, unique appearance that tons of other clone waves(vahki, bohrok, rahkshi, etc.) don’t even come close to.

@@fernystein9516 ccbs doesn’t mean it’s hero factory. It was a way LEGO used to make a standardised system for action figures. Hero factory was ok anyways.
It's actually kind of funny. I was thinking about this yesterday and came to the same conclusions in terms of the S tier. So now, when are you going to do every character?
My favourite sets are definitely the Mahri. The underwater atmosphere and theme are just extremely appealing to me. Just wish I could’ve actually got them as a kid :/.

Don't know anything about Bionicles and I am already loving this channel.
The Piraka were meant to be thugs in the storyline, I saw their promotion very fitting as these were the ruthless savages that the Toa were up against. I changed the usual “bad guy” perspective in bionicle, these guys weren’t allied with the Makuta, the Toa or the Dark Hunters .. they were their own gang, and I always though it was really badass. They were essentially bounty hunters at on point, I just really love that we got to see Bionicle show that even in their universe immoral thugs exist .. these Piraka didn’t care about anyone but themselves and I loved seeing them locked up, I take it authorities of some Bionicle island took them into custody at one point. Idk I disagree with your points on the Piraka, to me they were very unique & I am very happy they were portrayed the way they were, it was very fitting for the gang that broke off form the Dark Hunters & did their own thing :)
Nice to see gen 2 Masters get the recognition it deserves, they are some of the best construction sets ever IMO
Found myself agreeing with everything presented despite initial feelings on certain choices. Having a hard time thinking of anything I disagree with, even. Some thoughts on 07, 08, and 09.
2007 is my personal favorite year, both set and story. The theme, set diversity, and overall ambition was out of this world. Story was great too. If I had the choice for one high budget BIONICLE movie year adaption, it'd be this one. I see it having the potential of delivering something not quite ever seen before.
Two key problems to the year though. First, the infamous lime joints. It hurts the long term appeal of 07 so much (my poor Hahli Mahri has not aged well). Second, the squid launchers were a functional and visual flop. Cordaks had to pick up the slack big time. A shame it also became a splitting point of opinion on Kongu due to overuse.
2008 didn't really fix their growing issues. More like, a culminating crash of their problems. And yeah, the adaption of the Toa Nuva to the Inika build was terrible, despite the air and swamp themes being pretty good, and the spot on idea of hero V villain waves. The av-matoran build was also killer... killer bad, that is. If it weren't for the vehicles and takanuva, I'd say it was one of their worst years, if not for story and ace-in-the-hole twist they'd been saving for years. Ignoring dues ex machina shadow leech curing rahi.
I felt conflicted on your choice of placement for 09, but I find myself agreeing. From a set and theme perspective, it was a great recovery from 08, despite joints still being an issue. Av-matoran build wasn't quite as hate-able as before too. Given how polarizing it was naturally gonna be, I kinda feel like they should've taken an extra gamble and dissociate the BIONICLE brand name to the Glatorian wave. All the more satisfying when Mata Nui comes into play, and 2010 happens, bringing back the BIONICLE brand name to the forefront, where we get the epic culmination of-

Onua looks good, in a vacuum.
He looks nothing like he sould, but is surroundet whit two Toa what would fit into his bodytype.
If anything, Onua looks like a redesign of Nuparu Inika, and it wouldnt surprise me if he was plant to be him.
Pohatus Mask looks, beside the Vahi of course, more like his original Kakama.
Lewa remembers me of Kongu again but maybe just because of the Bodystructure.
Honestly, imagine if 'Glatorian' was its own line, but Bionicle fans were told in the comics that it was a direct sequel. Like, "to be continued... in the Glatorian Saga" or something.

over the point of being difficult to wash (16:56), you can simply remove the electronic component entirely by pushing it out while the battery cover is off, then replace it once dry. This even allows you to swap the colors between the different designs
I liked the Stars, they were fun affordable sets that represented important moments in the Bionicle storyline, could it have been better? Absolutely.
Desprite my love of the Kal, its fair.
Its absolut fair. Its filler, there recolorations, storywhise there was nothing, you can pretent it never happend and it wouldnt change anything, except the detail what ExoToa can move, and the Bahrag survived, and the Matoran have nice Masks and coloresheme.
Im glad that the Bohrok Ark outshines so much for you. Bohrok are easily my favorit sets in all of Bionicle.
I think a neat idea that Lego could have used to solve the Inika zamor problem would be to insert small magnets into each ball. The magnets would only be strong enough to hold the top zamors from falling out and weak enough so that the function of the launcher still works.
Magnetic zamor spheres sound wonderful for all sorts of uses in mindstorm and technic builds too. I would've also liked if they used a blue pin and axle to attach a swiveling top cover to the zamor launchers. This would've required them to make a female axle connector instead for the capacity expansion pieces, but I'm sure it would have been doable.
Who doesn't like GADUNKA.

The thing is the Piraka were the first 6 bad guy sets with characters that can talk and have personality
The Metru Nui (Great Cataclysm) and Voya/Mahri Nui waves are my personal favourites in terms of aesthetic.
Mabye I’m just null to nostalgia, but mata totally should’ve been C tier. They set the standard that every following wave should’ve improved upon. That’s just my thought process though
I feel that you have a good point here, as outside of a subjective point of view, the Mata are not the best sets, and I wouldn't even put them against later waves such as the Inika, Glatorian, etc. Were I to do this list purely based on an objective criteria (Points of articulation, recolors, play-ability, pose-ability, functionality, collect-ability, etc, etc) I feel they would have ended up in C-tier or lower.
Eljay Johnsen yeah that makes sense. And it is kinda worth noting you did put the Nuva in C tier, which is pretty close to the same idea as putting the mata in C.
And here I am with my 2001-03 sets thinking I'd seen most of what Bionicle had to offer.
I would’ve loved to have seen Blue Sky make an Island of Doom movie...
very objective argumentation, yet i would put the Nuva and Rakshi in S tier because they are the most iconic sets of bionicle by a longshot

Pretty good list, I agree with most of your points, though I would’ve personally moved around some, namely Winter 2016, Summer 2009, and Winter 2016.

I do love the rankings of your list, although the Nuva may not be as nostalgia as the Mata, they are still an improvement.

Ayt let’s do this. So I’m gonna attempt to do it here, but I’m gonna do the same as Eljay. I’m gonna let Nostalgia play a part but I’m not gonna let the story affect the sets (unless the theme, eg. Underwater, means they have to be a certain way). Meaning that for example, both ‘09 waves are in the C tier, even if it’s my least favourite year, simply because I don’t care about it. Anyway:

A- S2002; 2001; S2003; W2002; W2015
B- S2007; W2007; S2006;
C- W2008; S2004; W2009; S2009; W2005
D- W2006; S2008; W2016; W2003;
E- S2015; S2005
F- S2016; 2010;
Also yeah I quite like the Hordika (and think the 2005 story is very good) and adore the aesthetic of the Toa Nuva, more than the Mata. Like the aesthetic as much as the Metru, but the Metru are better sets. Don’t @ me.
As some who was too young to experience bionicle g1 (cuz i was literally born in 2001) i got the 2015 toa when i was 14 and only bought them cuz of the gen 1 story of itself was amazing when i read it in that same year.

2001 is definitely my favorite we get so much, the toa, the Rahi, combies that make rahis, the set that includes a lot of rahis you can make, the turaga, the Main matorans set wise there is so much world building and playable features are so awesome.
The Uniters of 2016 were great designs imo, and I really didn’t like G2. But you can’t deny the designs weren’t lack luster at all

2009 is a great year with the incredible Vehicle sets. The Skopio XV-1 and Thornatus V9 is excellent. I really liked the Drivers. Telluris looks cool and Perditus is a decent size for a rider. And I like his colour scheme. The Glatorian and Glatorian Legends were solid and overall it was a very decent and fantastic year! Loved the location and the atmosphere of 2008, Mazeka is incredible! Takanuva is a very consistent Titan and an incredible set. And alongside Mazeka, the vehicles were fantastic.
2007 was through the roof! Maxilos is definitely one of the best Titans we’ve ever received! Gadunka is brilliant and Hydraxon is awesome. The Mahri, I liked them. I like how sleek Nuparu is and Jaller looks great but the Matoran are fantastic. Loved the Mahritoran build. It is one of the best designs of Matoran we ever had. The Barraki were extremely unique and Nocturn was enjoyed by many and all of this made 2007 one of the best years.
2004 was incredible and therefore it takes a high spot on the list. Always liked Metru Nui and the Toa Metru build. It was an incredible year! The Titans were some of the most solid Titans we had. Dume and Nivawk being the highlight of the Summer Wave along with the really cool Vahki with their dual modes and transformation. The story was great and the sets being solid made this one of the best years.

Man you got me torn on whether I agree on the Metru/Mahri placement.
I wish the Mahri had a little more diversity of tools, not every one of them needed a blaster.
As far as set design and most of their visual aesthetic goes though, I feel like the Mahri crush the Metru figures.
Still, I think you hit the nail on the head with this, overall.
I t was cool to see 2015 get some love, because they were really fun sets.
Kinda sad to see all those years of innovation fizzle out.
My biggest beef was stickers over texture pieces.
Still, seeing Onua stacked was cool as can be, those body designs were all round masterful.
Gave each Toa a sense of being.

Loved the original toa, the bohrok, and the toa nuva. After the original sets i kept an eye on the comics but didn't do much except with the barraki, which were amazing.
I agree the Legends sets were the best since the Toa Metru

I love Hewkii inika, because of colors, name spelling/vibe, body design, and mask design. Secondly I am very fond of Ehlek, due to hues, feet design. Thirdly love Carapar due to colors. I love Hewkii Mahri, due to body and mask design, and weapon.
Eljay: Yeah, I don't think this wave is as good, but I'm going to put it in a higher tier anyway.

I would always put 2008-2010 as F tier because of the joints. The entire point of LEGO and BIONICLE is that you can build with them, both from official instructions to whatever you come up with. But since building with them literally breaks the pieces, they are worthless in my eyes. Literally kills the entire point of the toy.

It's a promotional poster from 2001 that was given out at Toys 'R' Us stores with any BIONICLE purchase. I found a handful on Ebay, however I haven't seen any for sale recently.

Crazy hearing how people apparently didn't like the Nuva set so much. It was sadly never sold in my area and watch the Mask of Life movie was a dread knowing I could never get the Nuva set. :c

I honestly think the Metru were the best canister heroes the original line had to offer. 04 gets a lot of flack for 'doing in the wizard,' moving away from bright colours, and leaving the island of Mata Nui behind. But honestly, I think everything those sets did was required for the line to survive. New colours were necessary to keep things fresh, and the same thing was true of the new setting; "Mata Nui gets attacked by Rahi/Bohrok/Rahkshi" was getting stale. Plus, sci-fi elements were coming anyway; the Great Spirit Robot was always endgame according to Faber; the more techno ascetic helped ease into that.

Summer 2009, Summer 2008, Winter 2009, Winter 2008, and Summer 2007 are my favourites. The vehicles were the best addition to BIONICLE in the later years. Takanuva is a solid Titan, and so is the Phantoka and Glatorian Legends. Summer 2006 I like too because of the Titans and Summer 2004 had fantastic Titans too aside from Krekka and I like the Vahki too and also the Visorak alongside the Titans from Summer 2005.
The 2015 weapons broke on me easily which brings it down for me quite a bit but the ascetic is not good either with them being overly bulky with patches of grible. But I liked your list and respect your opinion

I cant stand 2015. Partially because of the 2d prints, kitsch colors, proportions, and the lack of Bionicle aesthetic that we loved from back in the day. They are good toys in terms of articulations, playability, part count etc, but they are to my eyes ghastly to look at. It seems one either love them or hate them.

Well tbh I do really like the Nuva but they are some of my lesser favourite Toa's.
They're just the Mata with worse masks and dorky looking armour.
I do love Tahu and Pohatu Nuva, they look great, Kopaka looks fine.. the rest? Kinda ugly to me. I actually prefer the 2008 Onua, Lewa and Gali.
But then on the other hand I think 2008 Pohatu looks ugly.
Piraka deserve higher as they are very cool and original sets

My only disagreements with these lists are The summer 2015 if only because they were a definite improvement over The Lord Of The Skull Spiders.
Also people will remember Summer 2016, if only because it was the final wave of gen 2...

Visorak are so underrated. I rather have 6 semi clones that are basically perfection, than 3 misses 2 hits and 1 meh unique builds in a wave.

@@EljayJohnsen i acpet that thats becuase ima huge fan of the toa mata they came second in my life but first in my life is the ininka i love the way you can pose the toys and put them in stop motions like how cool is that i also love the the 2004 four sets i have alsmot all them expect for the blue one and i think that the 2006 titans were great my fav bionincle theme out of all time is ininka the music makes me fill better the sets throw me back to 2006

I completely agree with you for putting 2001 on the S tier, you've just earned yourself a subscriber. In addition, where would you suggest I find the Toa Mata for a good price? I only have Toa Kopaka and Toa Lewa who are two of my favorites, but I would like to find the other 4 Toa as well as the 2001 Rahi and Bohrok

This is your personal tier list - if you think something is D-tier, you don't need to assure the fans of the wave that you don't think it's awful twenty times. Say it's D-tier, tell us why, and if people don't like it, they can make their own videos.

I never touched the reboot and it's largely how I remember them from childhood, so mine came out with W2004, 2001 and 2006 as the top picks and 2005, 2007 and 2010 as the bottom rung.
Is 2007 well liked? I feel the concept of deep-sea equipped sets was cool but the executions on a lot of them sucked, the Barraki squid launcher for example was probably among the shittiest gimmicks in Bionicle history, and the Toah Mahri sets seemed like half were decent and half were shite and ugly-as-sin.
