    How does the frame mount to the car? Does it utilize the two inch hitch only? Maximum weight?

  • @korswe
    @korswe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think the Tesla Owner's Manual lists vertical weight limit on the hitch at 160 lbs. The EXO Swingbase weighs 68.5 lbs, Topshelf weights 33.50 lbs and the Gearlocker weighs 28 lbs. Assuming that bike weighs 25 lbs, there is not much you can transport in that Gearlocker.

    • @rackattack
      @rackattack  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello. Tesla does not show the tongue weight for the hitch on the product page but with a 3500lb tow rating, it should have a 500lb tongue weight capacity. A brand that makes an aftermarket hitch for the Y, which is likely the same hitch, lists the tongue weight at 525lbs: www.draw-tite.com/product/76430_class-iii-trailer-hitch Thanks!

      @@tristanbrotherton Tow weight and tongue weight are the only two commonly used specifications for hitch capacity. Please consult Tesla for clarification on the difference between vertical weight and tongue weight. Thanks!

    Hi awesome review of the Yakima system. Is the installation process for the Tesla Model Y different from the standard installation instructions from Yakima? If you guys could create an installation video for the MY that would be awesome. Thanks.

      @JackWu its a super simple install, once built just slide the 2” hitch into the receiver and tighten a bolt to 70 foot pounds with a torque wrench then put the lock on the end and its done. Is the hitch tongue weight rating 350 lbs or more on the model Y? I have this system on my Subaru Onyx and its rated for 350 which is a full system with Yakimas weight limitations on each platform.

    Great design. Here you swung away the entire thing, then swung back just the top platform to get access to the boys, but can the top platform be swung away without swinging away the while thing?

    Can this system work with my Thule cargo box and Wilco swing hitch?

    • @rackattack
      @rackattack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I can read and see the Yakima EXO system is meant to be used with Yakima EXO accessories. Using a Thule box on the EXO modular system could be potentially dangerous. If the box is too long you could clip and hit people on the side of the road or other vehicles when driving. Most Thule boxes are meant to carry Skis and that would be far too long for the width of your vehicle to transport safely. For warranty and Insurance purposes I would only use the Yakima cargo components with the Yakima Exo system. Better safe than sorry.

    can I carry two bikes and some stuff in the box for a Tesla model 3

    • @rackattack
      @rackattack  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your biggest issue with trying to mount that on a model 3 would be the tongue weight. The tongue weight is hoe much weight can hang straight down at the hitch. This car is only rated for 300lbs, this is plenty for caring most bikes, but not for carrying cargo and bikes

    I have this system and im telling anyone thinking about getting the wheels for the basket GET IT. Using it as a giant wagon is the greatest thing for camping even using it to pack your car with camping gear. At my campsite this past weeked i used this thing to move my dc fridge, heavy ass tent and ez up , placed my 200 watt pecron solar panel on it and easily move it towards the sun. The kids were also pulling and riding the wagon. Also wheeled it to the beach with umbrellas and chairs on it. I swear it is the greatest camping tool i used so far. I do hope yakima makes a rear bigger cargo box that just sits flush ontop of the basket. I looked at the gear locker in person and its a bit small for my families needs so opted to get the skybox nx 16 instead

    I was very nervous putting my brand new beach cruiser on this rack. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxG6JIgwJhur8_Rg8UeQ3EmePzi_wSncL8 But after reading many reviews I decided to get this one and take a chance. When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...

      Keep in mind to check the vertical load limit of your hitch receiver for your vehicle. The Model Y is only rated for 160 lb. The Yakima exo base component is already 68 lb, then when you add the 2nd level arm it's an additional 30 lb. Leaving only 62 lb of useable storage left.

    This rack system block rear view camera. And if you go for a top/dual rack it basically block viewing anything from the rear. For a $2000 dual rack/box system it's not a good design.

So far I haven't found the product to help me do that in a safe and nice way. I think that I am asking too much. I want to sleep in the car because its more confortable. So the fridge has go be outside somehow. I also don't know about how to find the right hook. 100 kg max sustainability. I have a kia sportage 2017. So if you have any good ideas let me know

    Doesn't the tesla MY hitch have a max vertical weight of 160lbs, so the hitch itself and the box weigh nearly 100lbs, so does that mean I can carry only 60lbs of stuff in the cargo box? And that's not including the bikes or the bike rack....

    • @rackattack
      @rackattack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. The Model Y tow package hitch has 3500 pound tow capacity and 350 tongue weight capacity (vertical weight). Subtract the configured weight of the EXO system and gear from the tongue weight to stay within the hitch capacity. Thanks!

    • @r_o_b_o_t
      @r_o_b_o_t 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After doing a lot of Googling, my understanding is that the max 'Tongue Weight' rating only applies to towing trailers and is not the same as the max 'Vertical Weight' rating which applies to things suspended off the tow hitch like bike racks and cargo boxes.
      Tesla says the Model Y factory-installed tow hitch has max 'Vertical Weight' of 160 lbs. So by my calculation, the Yakima Exo setup shown at the beginning of the video exceeds that before adding any bikes or cargo:
      SwingBase: 68.5lbs
      GearLocker: 27.8lbs
      TopShelf: 33.5lbs
      DoubleUp: 37.2lbs
      Total (without cargo/bikes): 167lbs
      I personally might just stick with a single-layer Exo setup on my Model Y-- still great to have the flexibility the system provides!
