A deep dive into the style savvy series!!! 🎀 had some technical issues while uploading it, but I have fixed all the issues and am excited to hear your thoughts about what do you think of the Fashion Dreamer game after having been out for almost a full year now!! How is it holding up to you? 👀

I loved the Style Savvy games but I still had such a poor idea of what Fashion Dreamer even was, even after watching people play and praise it. It just seems like there's hardly anything to do! Glad to see someone who shares my opinion on it.

To be fair, syn Sophia (the dev team behind Style Savvy) has been wanting to make another Style Savvy for years. It's Nintendo that didn't wanna back it. So they went to a different publisher and couldn't make it too much like Style Savvy or Nintendo might have sued, so their budget and quality suffered as a result. That's what a lot of people don't understand. Fashion Dreamer never tried to be Style Savvy, people just let their hopes, assumptions, and expectations take over. It's best to not compare them and just think of it as a simple fashion game that has nothing to do with Style Savvy beyond sharing a dev team. If you just wanna make cute outfits and take pictures of them for a few minutes a day, like old-school dress-up games, it's great for that.

Technically, game mechanics are not copyrightable, which is why there are so many “spiritual successors” to games in the industry. But yeah I agree that budget can definitely be a big impact on how much content a game has. I still think charging $50 on launch for a game that, like you said, is a similar experience to old dress up games which were free is a bit wild

You definitely have to play Style Savvy Styling Star at some point! I initially skipped it as a teenager cuz the whole idol aspect turned me off from the game at the time. However I finally decided to play a European copy of it for the first time as an adult after the disappointment that was Fashion Dreamer and it's been a blast! The idol storylines you follow are so silly and loaded with charm, highly recommend!

I've heard a lot of mixed feelings about this game and it makes me SO sad. i think the initial concept of this world of fashion and social media honestly made the game become a lot worse then something that was a lot more engaging of a game play concept (selling clothes, coordinating outfits for customers and the like.)
I do hope SynSophia comes out with another game soon though, I really do think they can make something with similar charm like before. Maybe on the second switch console...

Hi! I'm form Europe and played the original Style Boutique when I was a kid, also remember playing Love Nikki when I was a teen and always got this attraction for fashion games
I was soo excited to know that the developers of Style Boutique were making a comeback, I remember loving that game... But when I got Fashion Dreamer I was so disappointed for the same reasons, this is an e m p t y game... I had other expectations, didn't knew it was going to be basically a mobile game with gacha and everything XD
After some time, I got used to the gameplay dinamic and kinda liked the feeling of making clothing for people over the world liking. I also really enjoy dressing up other people's muses in hopes that they liked what I made for them
But that is that, there's nothing much, the only things that make you open the game again are those updates and festivals or your own desire of creating new pieces or experimenting with your creativity,,, but there is a lack of idk... personality to the game (?) It's all looks really ;-; AND, this is more like a personal level comentary but, I absolutely hate the festivals technique for making people keep playing the game (they work pretty much like a battle pass lol but free)
This game just reflects the game industry evolution and makes me saaad I don't want empty pretty games to be the standar now... I want to feel thingggs.... at this point im just yapping :P thank you for reading bye

I never liked Fashion Dreamer especially since they based fashion off of social media and clicks… yes that’s modern fashion, but man, it feels strange.
Fashion to me is the reflection of the inner soul and to slap social media and likes on it is just so… not it. I get it though, I really do, but it feels so wrong.
I will acknowledge that Fashion Dreamer definitely had some effort on it, like some of it has some charm. Sadly not my thing, I think.
I loved Style Savvy, although simple, was really engaging and fun with how you could coordinate outfits and even follow storylines of characters- ugh I miss the storylines and the funny dialogue, they were so charming.

Style Savvy always had a level of fantasy and escapism. Like, in the first game you get hired without experience and your boss loves you and basically lets you run the store and do whatever you want by the end. Your customers are cute girls that want to play dress up with you and you all live in a quaint, clean, walkable town with only cute men lol. I've never played fashion dreamer but it seems like some elements of that escapism are lost by it being too abstract. The town and boutique were idealistic but it was still a grounded world.

Style boutique (the second one) was so fun!!! Literally my whole childhood… I was obsessed… played multiple play throughs… many different styles of clothing, customers will actually wear your outfits, you can decorate the boutique, outside, inside, and windows, my favourite was how beautiful you could make your own character in such detail… it felt very customizable, personal… it was amazing 🥲 also the contests felt rewarding and the relationships meaningful… literally a perfect game 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Ps: YES!!! They need to make a game sililar to game 2 and 3 … all the existing features + open world + better graphics + deeper relationships… something like that would be so amazing…

  • @linesmakeshapes
    @linesmakeshapes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +45

Styling Star is such an amazing game 😭 the attention to detail is just so heartwarming. I love the absolute whacky random client bios. I love the message of expressing yourself thru fashion. I love the expansive photoshoot section with tons of facial expressions and poses and options for posing with another character. And of course, the little performances and songs/dances are SOOOO cute. Like i still go in to play and dress up the girls and the backup dancers for their concerts, coming up with new stage concepts in my head LOL. The dance animations are truly sooooo charming. I love the idol aspect of it, to me, it gave some real weight to my styling choices.
ALSO I think playing these kinds of designer games on the 3DS is such a core part of the experience. Like simply to be able to instantly pick the item you want rather than scrolling through makes it more enjoyable. The switch's touchscreen capabilities are not as responsive as the 3DS. IMO, this is also why Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer is wayyy more enjoyable than the home design aspect of AC New Horizons. It's just so much more satisfying to instantly choose and place ur item exactly anywhere u want, rather then using the analog stick on the switch or trying to clumsily place the item with its inaccurate touchscreen. Anyways ya srry for the rant❤😅

Fashion Dreamer is kinda like the Sims 4 of synsophia fashion games; Best graphics in the series (most advanced and smooth), very cautiously selected content stripped of all uniqueness to appeal to the widest audience possible/general public, claims to have innovative and refreshing features but ultimately proves itself to be a super simple and repetitive game that feels shallow at best. While I did have some fun for a little bit, I am pissed that I paid full price for this.

I think because people on socials associate and advertise it so much as a Style Savvy game they get disappointed once they play it and find out it's nothing like the other games, some people call it Style Savvy's sister game or cousin even and that's definitely better. I'm just glad that it didn't release during lockdown I can imagine the game performing awfully sales wise since we were all indoors with a lot of free time, a nightmare for this game!
    I'm a strong believer that if they had a little story mode or plot it would've improved the game by a lot, even without changing the virtual world aspect like the aspect of social media and fashion has a lot of potential yet they didn't do much with it which is a missed opportunity! All I hope is that they will make more fashion games for consoles as we are definitely lacking that, I'd hate to see another fun franchise bite the dust ;;
(Going on a tangent here oops) For the Nikki games getting attention thanks to Infinity Nikki, I genuinely hope developers really start taking fashion games seriously so we get more games that actually care about that side of gamers.

I absolutely LOVE Fashion Forward more than Styling Star (I love Styling Star too) just bc I feel Fashion Forward world is more alive and the fact it has a real time clock makes everything less overwhelming for me (I get very stressed if I'm playing Styling Star and I have to do a girl's makeup at morning, and go to the boutique at afternoon and in the night go to the hair salon and also do any quest from the storylines), in Fashion Forward I could go a talk with everyone and go to different places an take pictures and change the landscape, etc while in Styling Star I don't feel that freedom (but I'm somewhere between the start of the game and the half of it I guess, I just unlocked Enid Chen brand) and I also hate we can't earn money helping at the hair salon, makeup salon or boys boutique. But I enjoy the storylines. And I love both art styles specially Styling Star one bc I feel they did the makeup and skin tones better. But if I had to choose I would probably stay with Fashion Forward. I also love Fashion Forward UI, it is so adorable and I just love it so so so much!!! 💗💗

Honestly my biggest criticism with the game is that it didn’t lean more into this “fashion sandbox” theme it’s going for. It needed more organization options, more muses, more showrooms, more flexible customization with creating outfits/clothing, a better way of unlocking things. Not to mention it runs pretty poorly and navigating its different systems is clunky and inconvenient. I don’t mind that it’s different from Style Savvy and tried something different. If I want to play Style Savvy I can still play the other 4 games for that experience. But I think it somewhat failed at what it was trying to do.
That said I still somewhat enjoyed the game and don’t regret buying it. Hopefully they can use the bones of this game to create something better in the future.

This video showed up on my recommended and I loved it! Feel like replaying now 😊 While I do love the first game, I have a special spot for the last 3 style boutique games (not fashion dreamer ofc) + I loved how the customization was more varied as they went on. You should definitely play Styling Star, I don’t know where it could be bought but there were definitely physical copies being sold within Europe (as that’s where I lived when I got all of mine). From the other comments, it seems like North America were the only ones not selling it physically. It’s a great game and the idol part adds so much, for me it’d sometimes get a bit boring only taking care of the boutique so it was cool styling my clothing differently and seeing it be used in such a way. Same goes for the fashion shows/contests.

Fashion Forward was the first style savvy game I played and I LOVED it. I think I put 200 hours into that game, mostly in the first year alone. I had my eye on Styling Star when it came out and I loved it even more. I loved how plot heavy it was, and the amount of characters. The thing about the story is that you see the characters so often, they really feel like your friends. I care about their lives and what happens to them and they’re all so great I couldn’t even tell you who my favorite is! The best part to me was that there was MUSIC. I rarely see it talked about but some of the songs are actually pretty good and this was one of two or three games that got me through middle school for sure.
You summed up my thoughts on Fashion Dreamer exactly. It’s a BEAUTIFUL game and I love the customization and how unique you can make your character look. But without true goals to progress towards, it all feels meaningless. The lack of any sort of plot really put the game at a disadvantage. One of the things that bothered me the most was a lack of true currency, honestly. You can just pick up whatever clothes you want, whenever you want to. Part of the fun of the old Style Savvy games was finally getting enough money or stock room to buy the new items you really wanted! Having all the items handed to you at once makes everything feel a lot less valuable. I still think the game is beautiful and I loved messing around with it for a little while (I mean my pfp is literally from the game) but I haven’t picked it up in months and I don’t really see a reason to go back when I could spend my time playing games that have actual progression to them.

as someone who played trendsetter religiously as a preteen i was so hopeful for fashion dreamer and although the customization was very pretty from the makeup to the hairstyles and the fashion, it felt a little off to me and the technical issues that came with the game's release also put me off (like the lag when loading up your inventory)
as a kid i was able to play a lot of games i find boring nowadays for hours, but i recently decided to replay trendsetter to see how it holds up and was surprised at how fun it was and how often i would actually choose to just sit and play it for an hour or two, i think fashion dreamer missed out on a lot of what brought the style savvy games to life by putting you in more of an online hub than a cozy small town with a bunch of people and customers :( i do hope this doesn't mark the end and that they'll make more games because i'd love to experience something closer to the style savvy series again

Oh man, this video was such a trip for me. I played both Trendsetter and Fashion Forward and was OBSESSED with both. I played each game over and over and over, giving myself different goals to complete each time like achievements in other games. It's a huge part of my fashion style nowadays, and it really allowed me to live out my punk and gender nonconforming dreams before I had the money/parental allowance to explore them on my own. Had no idea there were games in the series besides these two. Thank you for making this!!!

i have styling star! it might be my favorite game in the series or a tie with trendsetters! 💖
imo it has the best storyline in the series. it's more than "you take over someone's boutique and progress through the fashion contests." you still run a boutique in the game, but you also meet three different girls who are trying to become idols and become their personal stylist. and they all have different personalities and their own little stories 🎀
and there's plenty of side quests too! also imo the dialogue is hilarious, sometimes it makes me laugh out loud 😂
there's also a bunch of quality of life mechanics they added. for example you can tell a customer to wait while you restock clothes for them. and you can also restock clothes you bought previously on your phone! i love it✨
i know there's a couple playthroughs on youtube of it!

Hi! Amazing video, I fully agree with your points (even though I have over 60 hours in Fashion Dreamer - admittedly I got it on sale for around £35 and I only ever played the original Style Savvy for DS so ig a lot of the content feels new/worth it to me - plus I just genuinely enjoy playing dress up a lot lol)
I also am a former games design student at uni. One of the first things covered in the course is all the theory about what makes a game a game. And what I find super interesting about your, in my opinion, completely correct analysis of the failings of Fashion Dreamer is that I genuinely don't think it's a game.
There is no win state to achieve or lose state to avoid - sure, there are four cocoons to unlock but they are functionally identical and outside of some more photoshoot opportunities you don't really get anything for that. There is no objective or real purpose: no plot to complete, no character development or relationship building, no discernible end to collection since content is user-generated and therefore, hypothetically, infinite, and no competition with other players. And, I think most importantly, no 'meaningful play': which is your actions having a discernible outcome both before and after you make them. Which is what you describe when you talk about the lack of consequences in the game.
If anything, I would say that Fashion Dreamer is an app. A very pretty, fleshed out app that happens to be made for a games console, but an app nonetheless. However it is still marketed (and priced) as a game. If they'd just called it an app, made it much cheaper (and maybe sorted out the organisation issues with items) I would not have any issues with it. And it is certainly not a successor, spiritually or otherwise, to Style Savvy.

I owned a Japanese copy of a Style Savvy game and played the game FULLY in Japanese back when I didn't know a single Japanese word (before I even encountered anime haha).
The way the game presents itself is very easy to understand and the outfits are cute too! I love how they validate everyone's fashion choices (I was obsessed with mixing graphic tees with fluffy skirts back then), and how your 'boutique' isn't you designing a new article of clothing, but mixing and matching fashion items to create a new look with existing clothes (which actually inspired me to look into my own closet and start to experiment)

I played all style boutique games and Fashion Dreamer and I agree with you, Fashion dreamer lacked the life that the style boutiques games had, the npcs feel bland and the only way for you to enjoy the game at full you need online mode. The characters and outfit making are prettier and there is more variety but the game for some reason just feels repetitive compared to the style boutique games those small moments you had qith the charcater, the story mode this games increase your connection with the game i replayed all 3 style botique games (the 3ds ones) so many times to relive that. It's true fashion dreamer is a interactive game but they could have added so much to give life to the game also in some events certain clothes are locked by follower numbers forcing you to reach 1M and fastest way is not even making outfits it's taking pictures with muses

I loved Style Savvy!!! I did play the demo for Trendsetters (thanks to the Style Savvy medley from Super Smash Bros for Wii U), and in the technical sense, Fashion Forward was my first and only Style Savvy game (thanks to its demo as well). I played the heck out of it during most of my free time in 2017 and 2018! I also liked how they implemented not only amiibo functionality, but also Mii Maker/StreetPass functionality as well. You get a dress of your Mii's color once you get to a certain level and I thought that was really cute.
There was a demo for Styling Star that I played that could be found in the North American 3DS eShop, which gave me a glimpse of the game, but I never downloaded Styling Star due to Nintendo Network ID complications and my being a broke college student at the time.
When I saw that Fashion Dreamer was announced in the February Direct of 2023, my first reaction was, "Oh shoot, Style Savvy for the Switch?" It did seem intriguing, especially because of the fact that it has more clothing options and inclusive hairstyles (which Nintendo should use as a base if they want to update the Mii Maker in my opinion) and the idea of copying others looks, a la Animal Crossing, but Nintendo would post the update videos for the game, which made it seem insufferable. Thanks for playing it so I wouldn't have to. 😂

have you ever played life makeover? i found it after being SUPER disappointed with fashion dreamer and cant get enough of it. its so gorgeous. it is a gacha game but since you mentioned infinity nikki i figured youd be fine with that. its on pc and mobile. i never played the first style savvy game but i love trendsetter and styling star on 3ds. i hope we can get an ACTUAL style savvy game with modern fashions. fashion dreamer is NOT style savvy, and anyone going into it thinking its style savvy is going to be horribly disappointed. i like the aesthetics and style and fashions of fashion dreamer but theres nothing to DO. i was like cool theres quests and then they just die off. then later on they finally added more quests but its so boring and repetitive. also you cant dress characters incorrectly, theyre always happy regardless of how you dress them. i also find the search function to be useless. you end up with like 500 of the same item that is all different colors but you can barely even see what color some of the stuff is. i just find it to be irritating to play.

I bought fashion dreamer, pre ordered even, and it was the biggest disappointment of the year for me!!
"Oh it's not style savvy! Stop complaining!" Bruh I saw this so much and that was not even my problem, it's ok, it doesn't need to be like it's big sis, the disappointment is cuz ITS SO DARN EMPTY!
I had a lot of fun doing lookits for a bit, but then it struck me, why? There's, like, nothing to strive toward, and the follower number is such an annoying thing to raise... And so unfun after a while, too. Literally the worst part of the grind, forever.
Like, I thought we'd be like a fashion influencer of sorts, maybe a few things to do with promoting brands and your own brand, but then NOT EVEN A STORY IT HAD! THE NPC ARE JUST HUMAN MANNEQUINS WITH A LITTLE BIT OF PERSONALITY SOMETIMES!!
Plus you kinda can't mess up. No matter how silly or weird or out of theme, the NPCs just accept it and you get points anyway, and don't even lemme start about the bloody lack of filtering and how weird the colour thingy is?
Ok you want leopard print, lemme scroll for 3 years till I find one. Wait you want polka dot? Do I even have polka dot... wait, leather? ...does this one count? I dont know, uh... Oh, you want pink? Ok here you go- what? That is literally pink, why the heck is my score lower?! It counts as red? Whyyyy?!
And the eggs space thingies, there so few?!
    The whole game feels so undercooked and empty, even if the stuff that is there is nice... when I started I found the models so pretty and stuff like this, only to be faced with ultimate sadness when I saw it was like a beautiful vase, devoid o flowers... ;-;
Sorry for the long rant, thanks for making this video! Seeing the old ones... now I want a true new style savvy even moreeee gaaaah lol

Personally I felt like the series started to go downhill after the third game. The third game was good, but I remember finally getting to the fashion show and I thought it was like the first game (where you participate in multiple shows until you get to the final international one)- but no. You participate in a single show and THE GAME ENDS! I remember being so mad because I felt like the plot ended way too early. Also the dollhouse aspect was kinda a miss for me. For the fourth game I only played a few hours of it, and I remember the characters and story were cute and funny- but I got bored quickly as there wasn’t much new compared to the past games. Trendsetters/2 was the absolute best and the series had so much potential that they just never built upon… so sad. As for Fashion Dreamer, I haven’t played it after hearing all the bad reviews. I’ll wait till it’s on a huge sale to play it.

I played the Style Savvy/Style Boutique games on the DS and 3DS (I unironically found Style Boutique on sale and bought it on a whim). I really enjoyed 2 and 3 a lot due to the amount of customisation options and npc interactions and 3 had a really good story with the main idols you were following and helping. I was looking forward to Fashion Dreamer and was really disappointed with the whole game. There is a huge focus on getting likes and collecting points for your outfits and showing your customised clothes (recolour of a base clothing pattern) in the showroom and it is super grindy to unlock new patterns, colours and eye styles from npcs. Npc dialogues in this game are so shallow and empty. I really want the store owner gameplay to return because I got attached to the npcs that I met in my boutiques and I also enjoyed the fact that we can give hairstyles and makeovers for npcs.

thanks for making this, i've been waiting for anyone to talk abt style savvy this extensively. i played styling star when it came out, and i really did miss the fashion shows, but the relationship building with the stars you got to style was really nice, they all have very sweet and in depth stories and the relationships you get to build with them feel like genuine friendships, i set my in game phone background to a selfie i took with Rosie, because i just love her so much. i was soooo excited for fashion dreamer, and so so disappointed when i played it and realized there was no story, not even a boutique, no relationships that feels like anything with any of the npcs. the fashions are great, but it just feels so empty without all the things we got from style savvy. i wish we could get another style savvy game, that looks like this but with everything we got from the past games. sigh. maybe someday. i loved this video, i subscribed :)

The Style Boutique/ Style savvy Games were my whole childhood, I loved playing both new style boutique and new style boutique 2. I was kinds thrown off when the third game of this series came out because of the graphics. But when fashion dreamer was announced, I was so hyped and I looked forward to playing it. I played it for some time but I found myself not picking it up as frequently as I did with the other style boutique games. I wish the NPCs had a little more personality to them, in the style boutique games it felt like you made friends. I still play fashion dreamer from time to time but there’s really not a lot to do. When I wanna play dress up, I will play this game. Other than that there’s just nothing much to achieve besides your followers. This video made me want to revisit my old style boutique world, made me feel very nostalgic 💕

Being in Europe, I had no idea Style boutique was called Style Savvy in the US 😅 thank you for the explanation
Anyway, being a huge fan of the style boutique/savvy series, I'm really happy I didn't buy fashion dreamer. Unfortunatetly most (if not all) reviews I saw confirmed that the game is not as great as the old ones, that's such a shame 😓
I had a similar feeling with little friends on the switch. I didn't see if you had the opportunity to try it but that was a huge disappointment for me as well (but that might only be me because I saw more positive feedbacks online)
I guess our old games were so great (and still are in my opinion) that we build too much expectation on the equivalents on newer consoles and end up disappointed all the time 😭

I didn’t like fashion forward because of the dollhouse plotline. When I was a kid I liked the fact that I got to actually be a boutique owner, that little bit of immersion is probably why I spent hundreds of hours with it as a kid. when fashion forward came out and the premise became that I was NOT actually a boutique owner in the game, but actually a kid pretending to be one in a dollhouse, that was enough for kid me to never touch it again. Maybe now as an adult I’d like it, but back then the fact that they made me no longer a real boutique owner in the game was enough for me to drop it. I still play the first 3ds style wavy a ton, it is such a comfy game and creating different outfits will never get old

Fashion Dreamer was my first actual dress up game. I picked it up because of all the praise I heard from the studio, and Style Savvy as a series always intrigued me. I had a lot of fun with the game, but hearing from og fans really does make me wish the game was more than what it currently is. Either way, I enjoy having tried out the genre, and I'm super excited to play the new Nikki game when it comes out! And if I really wanted, I wouldn't mind going back and playing a proper Style Savvy game.
Also, I just wanted to note I love the way you capture and display 3/DS footage and gameplay! Capture cards are hard to come by for the console, but you still make your footage work so well!

As a young style savvy fan who has always loved dress up games and only played Styling Star in around 2019, i fell in love with its story and songs, playing it for a really long time.
When this came out i was so excited, just like you said, mostly because of the beautiful graphics, but it ended up being a disappointment, I've played it for less than 10 hours, and i guess it made me realize that what i liked the most about styling star was the story and the songs, so just mindlessly making outfits wasn't really for me...

Fashion Dreamer just was NOT it for me, if it does get a sequel (I feel like it’s sold fairly well, hopefully) then I’d expect it to be a lot better, these are things I would change/ add in a sequel (I just started the video so if any of the points I make are similar I apologize)
They need to find some sort of gameplay loop because it’s just not fun.
Better customization, maybe patterns and fabric/texture?
I LOVE the idea of the four different areas if I was them I’d expand on that I think all of them are unique and fun, like maybe add more stuff, minigames? Enterable buildings? Idk
Get rid of the time exclusive events, I paid 50 bucks, I don’t want time exclusive content that *might* be made accessible in a later update. If you’re gonna do events at least make them loop or something, or make them unlock able one after another or something!!
Also add bags and make necklaces its own item category, those being gone especially give off the vibe that they are saving them for if a sequel is made (to me)

I have 140+ hours in Fashion Dreamer so far between 3 save files and well, Style Savvy is the clear winner, but for me Fashion Dreamer still accomplishes being a fun game to dress up in! Games you can dress up in are my favorite but there's a lot I don't bother with, I think Fashion Dreamer does have many quality issues, but it manages to be solid still. There's so many options for different types of styles and they've been continuing to update! A lot of my friends have it too so we all dress each other up teehee. Definitely improves with friends imo. You also don't need to pay anything to go online in this game unlike many other Switch titles!
