Kyokushin Karate is the foundation of Dutch kickboxing and Kudo karate. On the the subject of " no face punches" is somewhat debatable. I started Kyokushin Karate in the early 70's and the full contact tournaments were few and far between so in the dojo we would practice for the street and practiced the original Kyokushin way with grabs, throws and face punches ( we would wear football hand pads back then) like you mentioned about someone who has done boxing before starting Karate, it helped a lot.

This video is mostly about the organized curriculum that is commonly practiced. When it came to karate styles, I was thinking about what is needed for grading and common competition practices. There are definitely Kyokushin schools that bring that kickboxing style into the school to cover their weakness, but it is not a part of the curriculum, in reference to grading or competition in most dojos. So, while some dojos may add it I didn't count it for this video. If I was to add it I would have to add it to any martial art that may bring it in as additional training. And while I know TKD schools that actually have a kickboxing style sparring once a week, it wouldn't make sense to grade it on the same level as kickboxing. If that makes sense.

Just to point out, you will need more than just sparring for self defense. This include some of the following,
    •Multiple attackers
    •Domestic abuse
    •Defending against weapons
•If legal in your country, learn how to use weapons
    •Scenario training
    •De-escalation skills
    •Awareness training
    •The pre and post fight
•Have some understanding about your country's self defense law, just in case you have to justify your actions in court

    • @patrickrichard5948

All valid points, but the vast majority of martial arts dojos and combat sports gyms will claim to be able to deliver on those standards, but almost none of them do. Self defence is a legal term, not a special technique

@@Liam1991 Everything you brought up in your comment EXCEPT de-escalation shows that you have no idea what you are talking about and are probably endangering people. If you attempt to fight someone with a weapon, you will die. If you attempt to fight a man as a woman, WITHOUT a weapon, the same. If you fight multiple attackers, you will at a minimum get the *&^% kicked out of you or die. There is also no such thing as pre or post fight, that is ridiculous. If you can pre fight, run or escape, and if you are one of those weirdos looking around to make sure there are no more attackers, you are clueless. So while you are degrading someone for saying a gun is a defense against multiple attackers, it is the only thing that will keep you safe BESIDES not starting the fight to begin with. Please don't tell people you know how to do any of those things, its clear you dont.

I also wanna say there's kickboxing styles that make use of similar rulesets to Kudo Karate: Sanda/Sanshou, Kun Gek Do (Korean Kickboxing, which takes TKD and actually practes it in a way that you can use, pretty much right off the bat) and Shoot Boxing. All three of these from what I've seen and heard should be good enough for Core Style placement IMO. Although my understanding of Kun Gek Do is admittedly limited as there's not much on it. I do like how traditional martial artists are trying to revive their arts by incorporating more elements and more pressure testing nowadays. Even Kung Fu guys in China are starting to cross-train with Sanda guys more and more. There's hope for Traditional martial arts to experience a revival. If a Choy Li Fut, Hung Gar, Wing Chun or Baijiquan fighter practices regularly with kickboxers and pressure tests a lot, these styles can become good enough for Core style or at least auxilliary.

So, for Ninjutsu I just recently found out about this thing called AKBAN Ninjutsu and I gotta say that one is actually pretty good. Some Israeli guy named Yussuf went to Japan, studied Bujinkan Ninjutsu under Hatsumi Sensei and earned his 5th degree belt, went back to Israel, mixed it with Krav Maga, BJJ, MMA, HEMA, etc and then incorporated shit tons of pressure testing and basically revived the dead art. From what I've heard and seen, his Taijutsu (the martial art aspect of Ninjutsu) is actually useful. I'd say AKBAN Ninjutsu belongs either in secondary/auxilliary or full on core/base. I'd say probably Auxiliary but I'm not sure. I think if the AKBAN guys compete more, it might be worthy of Main/Core systems placement.

    Hi Leo,
I watched every video on both of your channels now, and I want to thank you for the well-made content!
I'd also like to ask, as I'm a bit confused with some of the info (e.g. the usefulness of karate, uechi ryu and kyokushin).
In this video, you state that Kyokushin is more allround and useful as a base. But in other videos you've also said very good things about uechi ryu which you're practicing.
For the purposes of getting good at self defence and general conditioning, would your rather recommend MT, Uechi or Kyokushin?
I've found an Uechi dojo 1 hour away, and a Kyokushin gym 25 minutes away (which competes in tournaments and has several medallists) (and several Muay Thai, boxing & MMA gyms).

    • @StrykeTeamOfficial
      @StrykeTeamOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

So in this video I am talking about averages. The issue with Uechi is many gyms don’t do traditional Uechi sparring. If they did I would actually put it above Kyokushin. My school did, and the old dojos did around 40 years ago pretty consistently. Now it’s much more rare. Kyokushin on the other had does Kyokushin style sparring at 100% of gyms and that is why I rank it higher. You have that same thing with Muay Thai. If you aren’t at a cardio gym chances are people are competing and sparring. Since you’re actually looking at specific gyms I would try to not look at the averages and actually go visit them all and do a demo class plus watch an advanced class or sparring class. Judge them by the teachers ability to explain techniques well, the average ability of those who are competitors, and the overall culture/ the people you just think you would like the most as friends. One thing from a self defense aspect though is headshots. For the Kyokushin gym ask if they have any days that they allow training with headshots. Thats Kyokushin’s main weakness. Also, make sure they all spar and extra bonus if any of the teachers go over the non-combative principles of self defense which are arguably more important. Was that clear enough?
And thank you for watching all those videos I really appreciate it and it’s good to know people are getting value out of them!
