The Lions did this to themselves through terrible ownership and management. They weren't a victim of the NFL. Nobody has cared about the Lions for ages because the Lions never gave anybody a reason to care. Maybe they build something worth giving a damn about in years to come, but don't pretend that the NFL is the reason they've been bad. The adversity the Lions have had to deal with came from within.
The Lions went for Gibbs because when Anderson was gone they Gibbs. The Lions set themselves up in free agency in the backfield, they got the 2 that they wanted.
Put Gibbs and La Porta on the same side, spread out about 7-10 yards to split the defense and make them commit to one then Goff roll that way and pick the more open one to throw to. Both will get yards after the catch. Actually that is of kind of a Tennessee play so it will work with Hooker long term as well.
The whole argument that suggests "don't draft a RB early because you can find one later" can literally be applied to any position on the team. Personally, i think you should draft elite skill players when you can and who cares what pundits think. One year from now nobody is going to be saying that Gibbs or Bijan were taken too early.
I believe he is going to be a wonderful complement to David Montgomery and with our offense line he will have space and opportunity go Lion's #Onepride
To me taking a top RB in the first round isn't as bad as some people think but it also is as bad as some people think. Here's what I mean, you will have this RB on the cheap for 5 years with the fifth year option a first round pick is given. But again you will usually only have him for about 5 years because of the wear and tear on his body, so you can't look at him as a 10 year player, so not a foundational piece like a QB edge player or a LT.
No, but he did get tired of the game overall (maybe also tired of losing and culture). Probably lots of minor injuries that didn't get reported. I have an NFL player in my family, someone that played a less tackled position, and he would say his body felt like shit every week for his whole career.
In ‘93 he missed a few games at the end of the year. I believe it was an MCL injury. It was especially upsetting for me because my first game I went to was the season finale that season, which they won to win the division, but I didn’t get to watch Barry play. I think it was 4 or 5 games he missed, but that was the only injury in his career. Barry’s playing style was different than what Florio was referring to. He never got hit, so dealing with all those car wrecks didn’t apply to Barry like it applied to Emmitt and Beast Mode.
He can tote the rock, maybe not an inside runner so much but can flex out as a wr and run routes with a 4.3 top gear. This was a good pick to expand and offense that was getting better each week after a bad start, The Lions are doing what it takes to build a winner with depth of talent, and tons of speed.
No one talks about what the Lions are doing. The Lions are putting weapons left and right around Goff. A lot of young talent and a veteran quarterback to lead them. An explosive offense and a defense who can cause turnovers is the recipe to a superbowl
Idk why anyone is surprised Gibbs was a beast at Bama last season has all the tools to be a great running back lions saw what they wanted and got him better than teams reaching or not getting the guy they want
Two comments: 1. Bell cow Bijan was passed up as Lions had very experienced, seasoned Bell cow RB Montgomery and Bijan would have not complemented anything for years to come. 2. Not taking Bijan at 6 and getting Gibbs and LaPorta in return, will prove so much more for this offense, as Swift had not panned out, beeded to go and LaPorta is a genuine tackle breaking tight end, who is ultra dynamic. Both Gibbs and LaPorta are instant starters in this offense and in addition, Gibbs will be a great kick-off returner, if Dan chooses to use him that way, like he did in his college. Who gives any damn what armchair GNs and clueless critics think ( actually say without thinking)!!!! Mel Kuiper got 1 out of 256 correct!
Every year there’s a few fan bases that feel the need to very strongly defend their teams picking an RB high or giving a huge contract/extension to one. They always say this guy is worth it, even though previous high picks and big deals haven’t worked out. When will people learn?
We had reports that there was several teams that wanted Gibbs we in Detroit are tired of the knee cap Crap. We have a great team and coaches finally. Also a great front office. We in Detroit have never had that before. I know. I’ve been a Lions cat for over 50 years. We are extremely happy to have Gibbs and Jack.
I would expect Montgomery to get 15 to 20 carries a game and about 3 receptions. I would expect Gibbs to get 10 to 15 carries a game and about 5 receptions a game.
Sounds about right, I expect both to have a 20 yard play at least once a game also. 58 is about to become an even bigger star this year cause both those backs are going to be tremendous in the screen game. September can't come soon enough
Lions went into this draft knowing that Swift wasn't going to be with them much longer. Whether it was for this year or just through the weekend didn't matter, he was gone in their minds. Gibbs makes sense when you think of it like that. Factoring in his pass catching abilities makes even more sense with their particular offense. He wasn't going to be there in the second round and they knew it. Get your guy. I think history will look fondly on this move.
How do other high RB picks from the last five or so years look? Everyone said the same thing you’re saying now about them. I’d say those picks don’t seem worth it
Looks like LaPorta is gonna be a problem too. I feel like once they get jamo's speed out there to go with Gibbs' speed they could be an all time type of offense. Can't remember who all the last 11 opponents are but they could easily put up 40ish a game
I wasn't entirely sure about the pick then I looked at the film of the Lions reaction in the draft room after the pick. They were jumping around slapping and high fiving each other like beyond normal happy. Their faces looked like the cat that had just swallowed the canary. I then realized they weren't settling but got a player they had been targeting hard.

Someone should own that Fact.... Just making the league a little more interesting....
Lions want to go this year!!! I have them @11 reg season wins this year! SEA, NO and DAL are convertible losses that could EASILY become wins = 14 wins!!!
This is my take on my team 2023 #1 draft pick and the logic on why they let go the 2022 backfield mike florio spoke on it recently Williams was a one trick pony and swift was injury prone even before we drafted him out of college and both of them wanted big contracts so we got 2 durable replacements at the price they wanted and will get 3 yrs out of these two non injury prone guys with special talents I stand on Lions Super Bowl or bust this year forget the playoff experience we got the coaches and the qb that’s been there
There were dozens and dozens of running backs over the years who were effective and even great over the years without injuries every year. Yeah, Emmitt, and Marshon but what about Barry, Curtis Martin, The Bus, Walter, to name just a few. What's happening with running backs these days? And don't tell me the defenses are better, I don't think so. Take a look at an NFL Films about the defenses back in the day. They would literally take your head off!
Gibbs is gonna catch a ton of short passes (and YAC them) and he is going to avoid the big piles where injuries are more likely to happen. Montgomery is going to take those runs and that "wear and tear". Also, Gibbs fits Goff's strengths perfectly. In many ways, Gibbs spans two positions and can be thought of as a WR/RB flex position. Also, the Lions taking Gibbs is like me ordering and happily eating the BETTER Culver's hamburger when everyone else is talking about how great Five Guys is. Culver's is a better fit for me, even if you don't understand.
Gibbs screens to Penei's side😍 gonna be nasty. Can't wait to see 58 trucking DBs n Gibbs housing it. I think once jamo is back they could have an all time offense
Great value because they drafted special player. Their type of guy, in what everyone calls a weak draft. Get your guys in a weak draft. Replace swift who could of been special but also draft to protect the missing speed j mao has. Wait for week 8-9 after the bye so much speed. Lions more like cheetahs watch who can cover that?
Simms gatekeeping on who can talk football. I'm sure he'd lose his mind if the NFL made a standard for talking about football "Play in more than 32 games or at least be a position coach or higher for coaches."
I truly believe the lions didn't want bijan. Maybe if Atlanta took Gibbs and bijan was there at 12 they'd have thought about it. But if the lions actually wanted bijan and him going to Atlanta caused a panic amongst Detroit executives and that's why they took Gibbs, that's a problem. You see it in real life where a woman has an exbf get married and pushes and marries the next poor fool who comes along no matter who he is. But Detroit is drafting to win. You don't draft Gonzalez to be CB 3 or even 4 when you can trade back and get a top running back and starting tight end in one deal and a starting linebacker to help that run defense
lol before i even saw the comments first thing i see is a patriots fan saying they wanted him i was going to say patriots were going to pick him up sources say they congratulated the Lions on the pick NOT A REACH
So let me explain it to you, the traded swift for a younger healthier and cheaper talent. They trade down and passed on Robinson because they got there cow bell running back in Montgomery. By trading back they got both their replacement for swift and hock. Guys they drafted that fit their culture as swift and hock unfortunately were part of the Quinn/ Patricia era they are trying to move on from. This shows the Lions do understand what they are doing in building a team.
@@MyDemonsJourney Still not making sense. Gibbs on paper is better than Swift, but we've seen flashes of Swift being excellent. Swift is still very young and capable. The Lions also don't seem to understand positional value. They could have drafted Jalen Carter, Paris Johnson, Tyree Wilson, Darnell Wright, Peter Skoronski, or Broderick Jones, but instead they took a RB that probably would have been there at pick 18 and even later. Then they take Sam LaPorta, which imo wasn't even close to the best tight end available at 34. The Lions likely could've drafted Broderick Jones at 12, Jahmyr Gibbs at 18, and Jack Campbell at 34. Sam LaPorta would have been available at 45 (although taking Branch there would be the better move). It felt like they went against everything that GMs have collectively learned over the years about positional value and understanding draft projection
@WoJack Horseman so the idea of positional vaule is stupid when most guys are bust. Draft the guys that will work for your team (the public has been brainwashed and condition to think one way and we people go against that it's called reaching despite the fact we only have less then half the info) Gibbs was the #1 back on alot of boards LaPorta was the top te on alot of boards So for you to think they could of taken both of them later shows you didn't pay attention. Sean Payton and Andy Reid knew Mahomes was special and spread misinformation to try and get him, which is why he was the 3rd QB drafted. So to sit there and assume there was a better pick at 18 is Ludacris without all the information the teams have
IMO - I believe the Lions assumed that Bijan was going to be there at 12 after trading down from 6. ATL surprised everyone and The Lions took their second best choice

This is my take on my team 2023 #1 draft pick and the logic on why they let go the 2022 backfield mike florio spoke on it recently Williams was a one trick pony and swift was injury prone even before we drafted him out of college and both of them wanted big contracts so we got 2 durable replacements at the price they wanted and will get 3 yrs out of these two non injury prone guys with special talents I stand on Lions Super Bowl or bust this year forget the playoff experience we got the coaches and the qb that’s been there
All that hate! Know 👀 lol
Can we stop with the knee cap jokes? It was funny at first. Its been two years
There were dozens and dozens of running backs over the years who were effective and even great over the years without injuries every year.
Barry Sanders never got injured or hurt during his entire career as a running back... He was nearly untouched in his career 😂
Kamara 2.0. This offense was top 5 last year and they didn’t regress. If the Lions address the DL then the hype is real.
He must be referring to Mike Renner when he was talking shit lmao
Montgomery is already worn out...
in the nfc championship. bump?
Barry Sanders never got hurt!
I think eddie george started over 120 staight games at rb
Lions are playing like the 1960's. Good old smash mouth football. The mud, the blood and the beer.
I dont remember any 60's packers teams having an offense like this ;)
That’s definitely a winning style for 2023
They didn't pick Robinson because we already have a bell cow in Montgomery.
And Gibbs is faster
If you already have someone who’s going to take a ton of snaps why take Gibbs in the first round?
@@reppingl - Speed kills, and you need more than one back in today's NFL. He's also good at pass catching. Mismatch nightmare.
Walter Payton never missed a game. Gibbs is good.
Is it just me or does little mikey sound a little jelly when talking about the lions
As a Packer fan the lions are going to be nice playoff team 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This kid is going to be a nightmare for the nfc north
Lions already have a carbon copy on Bijan in Montgomery. Gibbs was the better compliment to the backfield.
Simms gatekeeping on who can talk football. I'm sure he'd lose his mind if the NFL made a standard for talking about football "Play in more than 32 games or at least be a position coach or higher for coaches."
Awesome
I think the gap between gibbs and charbonnet is pretty big
and Barry Sanders
lol before i even saw the comments first thing i see is a patriots fan saying they wanted him i was going to say patriots were going to pick him up sources say they
congratulated the Lions on the pick NOT A REACH
Statement game...beat Kansas city. The NFL will have to respect us! Detroit vs errbody!
I don't know but is it me or is that top button on Sims shirt making him look a little ein bisschen Deutsch. Just sayin'
he played 10 seasons
I don't see the difference between Gibbs and Swift being large enough to take Gibbs at pick 12. The Lions dont seem to understand how to build a team
Draft the guys that will work for your team (the public has been brainwashed and condition to think one way and we people go against that it's called reaching despite the fact we only have less then half the info)
Gibbs was the #1 back on alot of boards
LaPorta was the top te on alot of boards
So for you to think they could of taken both of them later shows you didn't pay attention.
Sean Payton and Andy Reid knew Mahomes was special and spread misinformation to try and get him, which is why he was the 3rd QB drafted. So to sit there and assume there was a better pick at 18 is Ludacris without all the information the teams have
Barry Sanders knew how to avoid big hits and stay healthy.
FORWARD DOWN THE FIELD!!
Tell me what's the wrong slot for a perfect fit. Oh wait, it was a perfect fit.
Sims hitting florio is my favorite scene ever
LOL!!! SImms hit Florio!!!! He hit him!!! DUde what the F? Florio is like me...elderly abuse dude....elderly abuse!!!!
Yo, Barry Sanders never injured
Barry Sanders
Lions - Who the hell is Mel Kieper anyways!
Micah’s daddy was damned by darth sidious
This dude is a Vikings fan.
They pick the player they want when they can guarantee to get him…great…but, you better be right and not pass on a hall of famer, or you’ll be gone
IMO - I believe the Lions assumed that Bijan was going to be there at 12 after trading down from 6. ATL surprised everyone and The Lions took their second best choice
This video didn't age well did it Mike "your friend's mean dad when you are a kid" Florio?
LAMAR ODOM WHO WAS ON CRACK !!!!!!!
Already a problem......
Lions fans you guys will win 10 MAYBE 11 games this year and lose in the first round of the playoffs but you’re definitely a team on the rise… hope to se you guys in the playoff (saints fan)
Who are all you novice tv analysist to say that someone should go 8 spots lower or higher. What do you know? We see how that worked out for mayock. You guys dont know squat. You opinons shouldnt be validated either. You are highlight watchers and that is it. Some of the takes are just crazy. Whatever.
They took a RB in the top 15? What the hell lol.
