well that was just a technicality - Swift did not have the most important ability - availability - he had played out his entry contract and was up for a new contract - and it was pretty obvious the lions were not going to sign him to a long term deal. If I remember - just a couple days after the draft the lions traded Swift's rights to the eagles . At the time Gibbs was selected no one with any knowledge of the team thought Swift was going to be staying a lion .
It wasn’t just that we took him high in the draft. We also acquired Mont that off season so it was treated like how Penix was this year with Kirk in ATL. But very glad we snagged him Monty & Gibbs best one-two punch in the league.

All 4 of those Lions first picks in 2023 are full blown studs and among the best in the league at their positions now. BB might legitimately be the best safety in the league, Jack Campbell is quietly dominating and a rock at LB for the Lions and while Sam LaPorta is statistically "slumping" this year, it's not his play it's being on a team chock full of weapons. Sam LaPorta couldn't possibly be more a complete TE or a better human being for that matter, and of course Jahmyr Gibbs... he's splitting carries with DMo and is still having a year many RBs would be jealous of. I can't say Gibbs is the "best" RB in the league because the years people like Saquon are having but if I was building a team from scratch to win next year Gibbs would, hands down, be my pick for RB1.
