      This oddly reminds me of an unrelated car review video from Redline Reviews, where Sofyan Bey (presenter) first mentioned that the side view mirror on the vehicle the was reviewing was nice and large. Later in the video he complained about how small the exact same mirror was.

      @@oddeye That's not strictly required. For example - I have at my workplace 40 racks filled top to bottom with 1U machines, like very high density compute system would have. It uses very deep rack system (they are over 140 cm deep), and unless you pull out like 1/3 of top machines (which really doesn't make any sense) and hang off them it has absolutely no effing way to tip. Manufacturer strictly forbidden putting them on a raised floor because of weight, too. We also have many just free standing racks, that are randomly filled with machines, from 1U to 8U, and there are many instances when heaviest devices go to absolute top (like 400G traffic generator had to be in reach of 3m/10ft long copper cables to all devices using it, and it happened to be on top, and that beast weights ~100 kg) , or super heavy disk shelves are dangling in the middle and nothing bad happens - we do have someone on site to run calculations before and during installations, and if something approaches tipping danger, safety person slaps warnings on affected rack (like "please move machine to lower U before next audit" or "do not pull out machine in U25-28 if any other is already out" or "if pulling out disk shelf in U30-U35, pull half, remove drives, pull rest or move machine below U12"). Of course if someone ignores that, there are consequences, and yes, we had accidents because of that, but every single one of them would have been prevented if person responsible heeded the warnings.
      In our case, we can't bolt down racks because they are constantly being swapped around.
      Two-post network gear ones with switches and cross panels are both bolted to the floor AND to the ceiling, though. They have a nice railing around them even. No one fucks with network gear.
      Edit: It makes a lot of sense to bolt down racks if they in isolated data center with hot/cold aisles with full air separation (like one you need blanks in each U in rack), raised floor, etc. - VPS providers, telecoms, database systems, 5G/network edge aggregation centers, made-to-order compute systems - they use that, but racks placed there generally don't move when installed. In our actual data center we have clamps on the floor, which are similar to studs on container trailers, just with a spring latch - we position a rack over the clamp, one person kicks the clamp spring, and it pops up from the floor, fixing the rack in place, and the other person kicks the latch, securing it on all sides simultaneously. But again, stuff there goes in, gets used until support contract runs out (2-5yrs) and gets replaced with identical, but newer one.

    Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, still watching but didn't wanna forget to post this. Your drives in unraid have the last 8 digits of the serial number as part of their names in the "main" tab. Should then be a matter of writing down or taking a picture of that failing drives name, shutting the server down briefly, going through one by one to find that drive, swap it and then fire back up. You'll have degraded performance for the duration of the parity rebuild but that's about all.

    • @OGSkumse
      @OGSkumse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Or, after having written down the serial number from the Unraid UI, you can just read the serial number off the physical disk, when transferring them from one case to another. But I guess that's a bit too late now. ;)

    UNRAID should give you basic information for each drive in your pool. This data should include the controller number, port number and the serial number of each drive. This is how you ID a failing drive. If the drive is completely missing from the system look at controller ports that are not used and physically look for a drive connected to one of them, this will be your dead drive.
    Edit: If you need help, call Linus and ask for Jake.

    • @KellicTiger
      @KellicTiger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah I wasn't using unRAID but FreeNAS at the time and finding the SN was pretty easy. Then powered everything off. Pulled each one out until I found the drive. Pulled the drive and replaced it, booted it up and away it went with the rebuild. Its not simple but its not too hard to figure out.

      There's also a plugin for unRAID called Disk Location (along with some other plugins) That allow you to make a map of your drives so you can identify them easier in the future if you have to pull them. It can also flash the drive activity light if you have hotswap bays with that feature.

      @Almamu Talk to a computer screw thread expert and find nuts to match the thread. Remove the screws from the case, get some of the epoxy type jb weld that comes in a plastic syringe ( not the firm putty in a tube ). Sandpaper scuff the inside wall where the screws come through. Mount your hardware running the screws in just a piece of paper shy of flush with the inside. Take a thin toothpick or needle and spread the jb weld around the nuts, being careful to stay away from the inner thread area. Line up the nuts with the holes and hold firmly in place while running the screws in till tight, watch your finger with the screws! Once the jb weld hardens those nuts will stay in position regardless of vibration. Also if you want extra security you can put a single small drop of the 1 minute set time ' superglue ' on the screw before installing it. Not the instant glue which is too quick, and not the loctite because that is too strong holding and the tourqe to loosen the screws for servicing might cause the backing nuts to break free. Hope this helps.👍

      I mean, Linus's servers are "realistic" for his company's needs. He stores an enormous amount of data, and he has an ever-expanding team of editors working directly from the servers all day every day. I do like Jay's approach to building his server. On the downside, using desktop PC components means less reliability. On the upside, "server-grade" parts are expensive and harder to get, and using desktop parts means that if anything fails he probably already has the parts right there in the building to quickly get it running again.

    I have the same case for my unraid server in my rack. Filter is annoying to clean but doable. The case kept making a lot of sound due to the turbulence you mentioned but there's an easy fix for that. For the middle row of fans, if you reverse the middle mounting row/plate/bar thing and then flip each fan so the airflow is in the correct direction, it drastically reduces the fan noise without affecting cooling or airflow. I find the front intake fans don't cause nearly as much sound due to turbulence as the middle row does in its default configuration.
    Reminds me, I need to change the cooler in my server at some point. Been running a Hyper 212 Evo cpu cooler on it for 2 years now since I had it on hand, and it kind of makes the case lid bulge by maybe a mm or two... It's fiiiiine!

It'll make an excellent file server though. It's well built and has enough room inside to fit just about anything that you can imagine. Except a proper cooler. Turns out 4 rack spaces just isn't enough height to accommodate a good 120mm air cooler. I tried that same mid-mounted 360mm radiator and it just didn't work all that well. It's cooling with warm air from mid-chassis.

    @JayzTwoCents Jay one easy fix for the open side vents drawing in dust via the middle fans, before cases came with filters I would take some thin fine mesh foam like what comes in motherboard boxes and find a way to mount it tight to the inside of the case, over the vent. If room is available you can put it on the outside for easier cleaning. Just make sure you make the edges tight so no dust gets by while still keeping it removable for cleaning. In the old days I'd repurpose the thin ' pre filter mount found on a lot of the old cases, and the motherboard foam is much finer yet still the same thickness. 👍👍👍

    I share your enthusiasm👍 Every NAS is technically a server since even the most basic 2 drive box will have a processor in it (600Mhz flavor and maybe 256MB of soldered on RAM). I ran a 2 drive Buffalo NAS for years. Heck, even for a multi drive system you could get away with consumer grade and rock Stable Bit Drive Pool. The only worry with consumer grade is cooling so be sure you keep that rack from getting hot. Tripp Lite sells a rack mount air conditioning unit (SRCOOL7KRM) for server equipment that's perfect for single rack installs like yours where floor venting isn't an option and/or room air is shared. Worth checking it out 😉

    I recently bought a Rosewill case like the one you showed. I was very disappointed in the rail placement. The holes in the case for the rails is centered in the side of this 4U case, they are not aligned at a U boundary. This made it impossible to mount the case in the rack to align with the other equipment in the rack. I think that you will also find that by using shelf brackets, the the bracket itself takes up space and will not allow you to put devices both above and below this case. If you are not going to fill the rack, then losing a U or two is no big deal, but inevitably, the rack ends up being full over time.

    So, I've used that case a couple of times. I saw some other people also mention using it, but didn't see anyone say, you don't have to remove the center fan mounts to access the drives. The drive cages will come out the front of the rack. Those little bumps on the top are retention type things that you can depress to slide the cage out and it locks in place when sliding back in (I can't remember for sure if there are screws on the front holding it in as well, but the entire cage with the fan comes out as one unit in the front to give drive access).
