Thank you, Shara! I was able to easily follow your plans and make an awesome dog crate for my new lab puppy. I made it to fit a large plastic tray (42x28), like you suggested and picked up a lot of new skills along the way!
I did not watch this video until now. Did not think I would have use for dog crate. But we are adopting a dog tomorrow and the people recommended to have dog crate. Thank you!
I built one a while back and used Oak dowels, no issues. Also I know they’re expensive but a Festool Domino jig is really accurate, faster and stronger than dowels. Very nice work 🤙🏻
I understand! Some dogs are chewers. Like Ryan said below, you could opt for metal for the rails but the frame would still be wood so I’m not sure if that would help a ton.
The “built-in” dog crate is a great idea! It’s Lucy approved too, so your client will certainly enjoy this for their dogs! I’m glad you’ve found a multitude of uses for dowels. You’ve got me trying to find places to use them too! Lol…. Hope you’re having a nice weekend! Keep on building Shara!
My friend sent me pictures of her pups chillin in theirs and they seem to like them! I’m glad you noticed my recent obsession with dowels. I think it’s really just that I got some new forstner bits and I really like using them 😂 I hope you had a great weekend as well! Thanks again for watching!
@@WoodshopDiaries …. I just now noticed that you’re almost to a 100k subs! That’s fantastic and you’ve certainly earned every one of them! …. You’re great! Keep on building Shara!
These are very nice dog crates and they are visually appealing. They are going to look nice under the counter in your friend's home. I agree with you. Your friend would have been wise to have planned the crates' dimensions around a plastic floor tray. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks so much! There are lots of options for beds and trays. I’m sure she will find something that works for her, but she was limited by the space she had available. Sometimes you have to make do haha. Thanks so much for watching!
Aww Lucy is so cute! Loved the video lots of help; can’t wait to get more details on the specs in link. I wouldn’t mind seeing paint process because I also hate painting, and if I can get it done fast with least errors in all ears.
Great job. I built a bed for a friend with a built in dog crate underneath the foot of her bed. I will be building a dog crate for our dogs for the laundry room in a few weeks.👍🏻
Clever idea! I've never seen built in dog crates. I especially like the not waiting for the paint to dry...i would not have waited either.😄 almost to 100k!
Great work Shara!! I saw your last dog crate cabinet build and really liked it. But seeing this now has brought it to my attention again at the perfect time. As I have a newish pup that has decided the couch is hers to sleep on and has been a bad influence on my other dog and he now thinks its ok to sleep on the couch. So I think I'm gonna be building something like this very soon. Thank you! And like always keep up the awesome work.. 👍😊
Thanks so much! I’ve built several over the years…our family and friends all have lots of dogs 😅 It’s funny how new pups can be bad influences on the older dogs isn’t it? 😂 I hope this helps you in your build!
Great job as usual Shara. Very well thought out. Should serve its intended purpose well. I don't think Lucy liked the idea of being put in a crate but she did do her part checking it out. I bet she's back on the chair you built last week by now. Thanks for Sharing!
Haha Lucy did take one for the team but I think she prefers her own crate as it’s a little bigger. She is actually hanging out with me on the front porch in the chair as I type 😂 she’s living the good life. Thanks so much for watching!
"Please join me as I take a ride on the struggle bus here for a second..." I've been riding this bus for years. LOL! It seems that, sometimes, the most simplest of projects has some element that causes us to struggle. The kennels are a great use of that space in your friend's house. They seemed to be Lucy approved. 😁
I ride the struggle bus daily 😂 I’m glad I’m not alone! They are Lucy approved! I opened the door and she hopped right in. But I think she prefers her own as it’s a little bigger than these. Her head rubs the top here 🙈😂
That was so awesome unfortunately we don’t have a dog anymore she passed away earlier this year but they will make some nice cabinets. I will try to see how I will do to make these.. lol!
Haha painting is always the worst, but the results are always nice. No pain no gain I guess 😂 I joke…it’s really not too bad. Thanks so much for watching!
Nice. I think you should use metal rods to prevent chew escape. Also, I would suggest the latch at the mid or bottom to prevent pushing on the door. I'm afraid the latch may also wear out over time and not stay up. Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your project ideas.
Metal is definitely an option if your dog is a chewer. In this case, her dogs aren’t chewers and don’t try to escape so it’s not really a concern. The latch can easily be swapped out or replaced (or simply tightened) in the future as well 👍 of course, if you build your own, the goal would be to make it custom for your own needs…which includes material choices and hardware options 😊
When I saw the thumbnail, I literally thought to myself, “oh, Shara has a project she painted. Interesting.” I always thought the natural look was kind of your style. Little did I know you avoid painting in general! 😂 Nice project!
That’s too funny. I definitely wouldn’t have painted if it wasn’t requested by the customer haha 😂 if it was mine, It probably would have been unfinished. Ha! Anyway, thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I have a sprayer in my storage unit and I’ve used it twice. It was a pain to thin the paint down and clean it all up after. Honestly, I prefer to roll and brush and not spend the time taping off and setting up the space to spray and then cleaning it up after. That’s just me, though. There are definitely pros and cons
Thank you for sharing this video and the plans for the build. I’m looking into a custom design for my dog. I’m curious about how heavy this crate was once it was all put together. Cheers🎉
I do not like to paint either. But the kennels would have been worse if you waited untill it was assembled. It would not have been rite if you didn't get a clip of Lucy in this video. Great job and thanks for sharing
Wow I hope I can get the material list my daughter inlaw and son have two big dogs and I want to build these for them I love them both and the kids lol I really like the houses for my two grand sons ❤
Awesome build Shara as always! Finally got a chance to use my kreg rip and accu cut. These are as handy as a shirt pocket! Only issue I had was its a touch inconvenient seeing the measurements on the rip jig. Thanks for recommending them though! And I'm with you, I'll find any excuse I can to get out of painting
Yes! I love mine. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without them now. I hope you enjoy using them as much as I have. Thanks so much for watching! Here’s to avoiding painting for the next few projects! 😆😂😂
I’ve always liked dog crates, but my dog has a tendency of chewing on wood 😩 made her a room in a closet space under the stairs and it’s time to remodel already 😬 either way nice build! Happy Saturday!
Oh yeah I know wood isn’t the best option for chewers 😬 I’ve seen people put their metal ones in like a wooden frame so it looks a little nicer, but it’s got the security of the metal thats actually containing the dog. Hopefully you can find a good solution for your remodel 😅 happy Saturday to you as well!
I love that we are on the same struggle bus 😂😂 you can sit by me. Also, I have the same rip cut struggle. It takes a little fidgeting to get it to slide on right. You aren’t alone 😅
The Struggle Bus...lol love it 🚐 Another nice looking build and as always plenty of detail and information. 👍But you can't con me I know one of them is for your boyfriend when he's getting on your nerves !!!
Haha the struggle bus is a daily ride 😂 when my husband gets on my nerves, I just take the dog to the shop and we turn the music up loud. No need for a crate 😂

Thumbs up, very nice and useful project, maybe dowel could be sobstituted with steel pipes? I think my dog could “eat” wood dowels in an afternoon! 😅🤣 Great!
It depends on what I’m making and how I plan to finish it. For painted projects, I really like DAP Platinum Patch. It’s not specifically a “wood putty” but it works great on wood and sands super smooth.
To fill the pocket holes in the stationary panel frame, pour a dab of wood glue into each pocket hole. Then, shove a 3/8” wooden dowel into the pocket hole. Then, cut the dowel flush to the surface to the surface using a Japanese pull saw. Then, fill any gaps with wood filler. Then, sand the area smooth. Once it’s the area us primed and painted, you will never know the pocket hole was there. Rinse, lather, and repeat for each remaining pocket holes. You have 3/8” dowels already. Why not put them to good use as pocket hole fillers. Give it a try next time.

Love this. My dogs would chew the dowels though, little monsters.
Could substitute conduit instead of the dowels. It would probably be cheaper, if a little more work to cut it all down.
I understand! Some dogs are chewers. Like Ryan said below, you could opt for metal for the rails but the frame would still be wood so I’m not sure if that would help a ton.
