    This was shot during my first ten days in Guatemala. I expect to be able to save more as I learn this country and town better.

    I really enjoyed your video as I plan to visit Panajachel this summer where my brother and associates are opening a cafe and an air b! Seeing the prices and comparisons are very helpful. Great voice too! 😀

      The market is great but prepare yourself to haggle. Lots of expats and tourists have inflated prices in Panajachel and the lake in general.

    I lived in Panajachel 2019 to 2023...I am 83 yo man.. great town, good prices. I am in Antigua for a while now...25% higher here. If I ran low on money I would move to the tinier villages 10 to 20 miles into the jungle for 50% less. you can live on beans, rice, corn chicken once a weel or so and tortillas for 3 bucks a day or less in a pinch... rent way under $100/mo indiginous style.. $50 or less if you like dirt floors... without a door and electricity a lot lower. I pay $500/mo for a nice 5 br, 5 bath place near Antigua.

    In Guatemala you can get some great meat for cheap prices. Everything down there is grass-fed.

    • @FastFredTravels
      @FastFredTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the meat is tasty and I have been doing some price checks of that on my facebook wall facebook.com/fastfred.river.rat/ if you would like to follow along. I will try make a video bout this and more later...

      I like to cook. It is a great life skill and so easy with fresh produce in Latin America. I am currently enjoying the Avenue of Volcanoes in Ecuador.

      Do you find you enjoy living in Ecuador or Guatemala more which country would you recommend to get residency? Is Guatemala the cost of living as inexpensive as Ecuador? 😁👍🏻

    We are in Xela, about 2 hours from Lake Atitlan. We have not made it to the lake yet but hopefully by the end of the summer. We are cool weather lovers and after 11 months in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, we have been in heaven here in Quetzaltenango.
    I am guessing the lake might be a tad more expensive than Xela but not sure.
    Where are you these days ?

    • @FastFredTravels
      @FastFredTravels  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have spent the past five months in Colombia and Ecuador. I prefer cooler weather in the mountains.

    Good information Fred. Do you recommend any links to find an affordable apartment there in Pana? Not cheap but nice, clean, and comfortable.

      I would suggest walking around town and seeing what's available. Some are advertised on Airbnb... I rented a hotel room for a couple of days while looking around.

    Have you ever been to Xela, quetzaltenango? Would I go up ANY mountains from the airport there?

    • @FastFredTravels
      @FastFredTravels  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not been to Xela as yet. I found Guatemala over all to be rather warm and affordable. I usually stay at higher elevations in the Andes.

    Negra Modelo is one of the best beers that is not from some local fancy brewery.

  • @scottanderson5590
    @scottanderson5590 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    While you were at the store you should have pointed out Gallo Beer which was right next to your modelo but made in Guatemala. Its good stuff!

    • @FastFredTravels
      @FastFredTravels  ปีที่แล้ว

      Gallo is cheap but I found it generally caused headaches as did another friend. You can generally find cheap local beer anywhere. Most of it is better than American Light beer but that isn't saying much. If you drink for effect gallo is perfect if you don't mind headaches. I prefer craft beer. Peru has the best selection of local craft beer in my travels.

    You went to a supermarket, everything is on par with American pricing, you should shop at the Mercado and the tienditas. Best prices and super nice people.

    • @FastFredTravels
      @FastFredTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The prices are not on par with the US with but small exceptions. The Mercado is covered in other videos. A jalapeno in the mercado cost the equivalence of 12.5 cents that I remember off the top of my head.

    • @nonamezplz4873

      Things in the grocery stores ARE on par with American pricing, I have a home in Reu and we shop everywhere including the grocery stores for a few items, the small shops and the markets are best places to buy in any city. For me, driving 45 min to xela to visit farmstands is the best. I we are in reu 3x a year. Antigua is a crap place, not sure what the hype is. All of Guatemala has volcanos, beautiful places and views.. Antigua was lame to me.

    • @FastFredTravels
      @FastFredTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do shop at the market too. However for my audience here on yt Spanish is required there. The better your Spanish the better the price. You should generally score for at half the price or less in markets. However no beer is sold in the market.

    • @FastFredTravels
      @FastFredTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It cost more than I expected. However world events such as the Russia Ukraine war and bird flu has increased food costs worldwide. I am currently in Ecuador.
