I am surprised by this source because I would not expect the students to be calmly playing a card game while in the classroom on the Western front during a class. The classroom also appears to be fairly clean and dry, and the students appear to be rather happy. I would not expect this scene during a class, especially because the students are studying for their life, and normally students do not have time to clean up the class.
Upon closer consideration, however, I am not surprised by this source. This is due to the fact that the students in the classes faced horrible conditions constantly and were suffering greatly during the tests. They needed some form of entertainment in the little free time they had to preserve their sanity, which was very important during exams. They also needed to deal with boredom and keep out of trouble during the long break between major tests. The classroom could be clean and dry because the students built the classrooms with drains to stop flooding and they probably spent some time cleaning up the classroom to boost morale and have more hygienic conditions. Also, card games were rather cheap and accessible for students, and were also a popular form of entertainment at that time.
