  • How to grow new hostas from seed.
    Part 1 described the harvest and cleaning of hosta seeds.
    I have grown hostas for about 30 years and have been growing my own hybrids for about 10 years. I am a member of the American Hosta Society and the Delaware Valley Hosta Society, and have learned from the pros.

    Really cool that you got them to grow so fast. Have you ever tried winter sowing them? Or autumn sowing them outside/or in a coldframe or greenhouse? Or do you know from other people if it usually works?
    I have no space inside and the only way for me is to cold sow my plants outside, and I intend to try out hosta.😊🌱

      Of course outdoor so 0:22 wing works, because that is how nature does it. But I do this as an indoor activity to keep me busy in winter. It also gives you much better protection if you are growing special hosta seeds.

    Thank you for sharing this so much David, I always wondered what would happen if I was to plant seeds so this was so educational for me! Tiny baby hostas look so exciting and i would have hard time to discard any lol.

      It takes a good deal of discipline to throw out all but the best seedlings. Even then you know you will make some mistakes by missing a seedling's potential, and/or keep too many!

    Thanks for the video. What is minimum temperature for germinating?

    Enjoyed video found it interesting and informative. I wouldve saved the non streaked seeds tho after pulling out wouldve just poted them in another container those ones tho as just plants i could trade with other gardeners..🌱

    Im a newer seed growing gardener and would be so excited to grow some hostas. I have 2 in my garden, but i havent seen them flower. Is there any chance you could spare a few so i may join in? I would be so greatful, and understanding if you aren't able to as well. I hope to see more of your videos, you're a great instructor, i appreciate you being so detailed too. Thank you so much for making the videa, hope to hear back 🌞

    Great video. How long did you leave in the freezer and how long did you leave to defrost.

    I’m having trouble finding captan like shown. I found some on Amazon that has copper in it, is that ok?

    Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge! I´d love to see an update on these seedlings next summer!
    I din´t fully understand the part about unstable streaky plants. Does that mean that for example Francee and Patriot would be useless in this instance?

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's correct. Hostas with stable variegation produce plain (single-color) plants. Even some hostas where every leaf is different (like 'Rainbow's End') aren't actually unstable/streaky, and produce only plain plants. It takes some training to know the difference.

      Great video, thank you. I have many hostas in my garden but never started them from seed. I bought some seeds on line that are purple and blue. Reviews were not good but I thought they might not patient. Now. Are you saying I probably will not have colorful hostas?😢

    What kind of light do you use? Shop light?Also leave light on 24 hours a day or what?

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use shoplights, and hope to replace all of mine with the newer LED tubes. Most people use lights on timers (18 hours on), but others leave them on continuously.

    Would a fragrant bloom hosta produce fragrant seedling. These bloom much later than any others so im assuming they are self polinated.

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a good possibility, but it is never certain that seed from a fragrant hosta will produce a fragrant plant.

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager  หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you make a cross with a fragrant hosta, it seems to be a coin, flip whether the seedlings become fragrant. That is my experience. If they are self pollinated, your chances would be higher.

    Do you ever select for most edible variety? Or purely esthetic?

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not interested in eating them. The breeding would be for tall, early-emerging hostas.

    Why do you not want green hostas

    • @nattyw495
      @nattyw495 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Iol i thought same thing but he did state he was looking for ones that had specific look, myself i wouldve potted up all seeds even if the seedling wasnt looking for specific look and traded the greens ones with other gardeners..

    • @davidteager
      @davidteager  หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I am growing seeds forvariegation, then I do not want green hostas. I have other breeding lines specifically for green hostas.
