Thank you so much Diane! Did you know that the late August "Lily" cultivar is 46 bucks!!!! I said no way and I did the paper towel baggy method and got germination! So exciting! This particular cultivar is from neighbor's garden and no other hosta so I am hoping will produce true to parent! Thanks so much for your video!! I collected soooo many seeds last year, kept them in the basement, and now I'm excited!

This is a great video. I love Hosta's too. When we purchased our home there were Hosta's covered over with leaves and brush. With a little TLC they are big and beautiful. I recently purchased some seeds on Ebay. Judging from your jar and what I paid, one could do quite well selling seeds! I'm most interested in seeing what I will REALLY get since the seeds are said to be a certain variety. Someone must not know that they are not specific. We shall see what I get. Sadly I jumped right into placing them in a pot without paper towel germinating but I will still make the best of it.
@@janiedawes3647 I know I must of missed a lot of comments a few years ago, maybe when youtube was changing the comment thing, anyway just trying to reach out to those that took the time .. yes I love dividing and creating more hostas.. so easy especially in the Spring, take care!
Hello, I planted a number of seeds in February & April in small pots, and probably have 30 hostas about 2-3 inches tall. It's November in Massachusetts and the hosta plant outside I took the seeds from is now completely yellow due to the change in seasons and it will come back next year. However, now about half of the seedlings I have inside are turning yellow too. My question is what happens to the seedlings over the winter? Are these expected to turn yellow, fade, then come back next year? Should I continue watering lightly over the winter? Thank you,
ok. I have baby hostas now. when can they be transplanted outdoors? the are about 2 inchs tall now but last frost fo me is may 15th and my mature hosta are starting to come up.
Mature hostas will be much more safer.. One year we had such a cold Spring that it did freeze the mounds of hostas all the way down but they did come back just fine.. With the little seeding I would wait till you have nights above freezing temps.. The little seeding just isn't as hardy at this stage... hope that helps!
Ok is this a dumb question? My hosta seeds are all encased in a green seed pod. If you open them up, there's a tiny black seed. So what you planted doesn't look like but doesn't look like mine in either form. which do I start as a plant? Big green or tiny black?? Thanks for your help
Hi Alan, it is totally up to you.. seemed easy to do this method as I can see what actually germinated.. You can certainly plant the seed outdoors as well and keep and eye on them..
Mrs Diane My seedlings are leafing out now one leaf on each plant should I open the top of the dome Now ? I have them in a tray under led lights inside.. will they have enough time to grow so I can plant them in the ground before winter ? Can I give them miracle grow ? I have been wondering if the stratification was really necessary. I got my seeds from eBay. They are tiny. They look like Poppy seeds. Different sort of hosta I guess. I am familiar with that kind as well. A lot of hosta don't produce seeds at all which is no fun.
The Hosta seeds will need stratification- (refrigerating for a couple weeks) before planting. Growing Hosta seeds is a simple procedure. Hosta seeds sprout nicely indoors, under normal house conditions, with temperatures running 60 - 70F. Use a "peaty" starter mix and just lightly cover the seed with peat moss
@@dianemummvideos Too late! They out in the front in a pot baking in the sun. Its only been a few days -- nothing yet. If they don't sprout however, I am not sure that will prove you right. The guy I got them from on eBay was very stingy with the number of seeds. I have read elsewhere its not necessary but it does help, resulting in more numerous sprouts.
Do hosta seeds have to be stratified before they will germinate like evergreens and garlic? If so, how long should they be in the refrigerator? I want to cross pollinate some hostas this year and see what happens.
They do not need a stratification (cold, moist treatment) to germinate. In the wild, all hosta species have the ability to reproduce by seed but some are more prolific than others. ... Either way, the resulting seed will be the mixture of two different sets of genetic material.
I want to put some in a mostly shady area near my outhouse. Can I simply plant the seeds in the dirt? I live in middle Tennessee. Should I plant the seeds now or wait until spring?
