  • Elif Bilgin is a 16 year old high school student from Istanbul, Turkey. She is currently participating in the ongoing Google Science Fair competition with her project about making plastic out of discarded banana peels. She has won the special award funded by Scientific American named "The Science in Action Prize" and also the Google's "Inspired Idea Award" which was given to her as a result of a public voting which was cast during the month of August, 2013.
    She started her project 2 years ago in a school for gifted children in Turkey, of which she has been a student for 6 years. Her project has drawn the attention of many people from media to politics, due to its easily applicable nature. Apart from her passion for science, Elif is also interested in volleyball and has been playing for the last 8 years. She is the captain of her league team in Istanbul

    Awesome to see we don't need petrochemicals for plastic production :)....
    Might sound like a silly question, but just curious if the banana plastic is biodegradable? And another, where do the other chemicals that are used come from? Are they sustainable to make?

    This proves if science promoted more than religion more people will do research and find solutions to country's and World problems. Sadly she is only one of the few examples when young people receive support they can achieve great things but not thanks to Turkish government as they only support and fund religious aspects, ministers of science and research never gets enough funding to support people doing research . Largest funding in Turkey goes to Religion so a country like this can never move forward except few people who succeeded against the odds. She deserves high respect and recognition as she succeed on her own.

    • @jcindass89
      @jcindass89 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So have you promoted anything on your belief or just another anti-religion yeller?

    • @OrkunOsken
      @OrkunOsken 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joey C Religion as a definition is a good idea, promoting peace and understanding but when used by people becomes to most dangerous tool, thus religion must stay in personal life and should never lead societies, science follows rules and logic which doesn't give any room for people to change it to their will or use it to control people but by comparison religion follows rules which doesn't based on any fact or logical explanation so some people use it as a tool to control masses to either gain power or shape countries. Finally with just religious education you can only find inner peace but can not achieve anything for humanity or bring earth to the future as religion is based on past and part of history, but science is future and creates history scientific education you may not find inner peace but you will create a better future for others and understand how universe works. It is always better to understand and learn than live in the past and obey without questioning.

      +Orkun Osken Agree this young girl's accomplishments are even more impressive coming from such an oppressive society. And that oppression stems from religious fervor and intolerance.

    You are very impresssive in problem solving Edison would have been proud and Edison and Tesla where not real enemy’s either so even Nicola Tesla would have send you a congratulations note or letter probably that you did great in starting as so many try without luck in making better plastics !!!
    So if I have a bread that I put in the freezer I need my plastic to not decay but if I keep my bread in the kitchen it’s fine if my bread decays that the storage plastic also decays after the bread developed a mold I don’t need that plastic anymore, but medical plastic and such that is needed for storing and not decays but is for longer purpose is great also so it’s a combinationof finding oil replacement products before we run out of oil, thank you for this presentation impressive !!!

    I have nothing to say about the idea, it is a decent idea and if the banana peals are the suitable material for biodegradable plastics, it is so, kudos. However it is a really bad talk as far as the TED standards concerned...
    1.Bad preparation
    2.If you developed manual wipers for glasses, where was the proof? (it includes the other scientific topics/awards, which she claimed that she has developed/won )
    3.If even a little bit of science behind the idea would not be presented, what is the sense of listening what she has done to reach this point for 10min. We are interested in the idea (in this case) rather than the history. why are the bananas more suitable than the other materials? If she is not doing the scientific work by herself, who is the owner of the work?
    She should definitely pursue her ideas anyway.
    if you find the comments here offensive, please read the first sentence of the comment...

      I live in Turkey and I can assure you that there is almost no 16 year old kid that can talk that well, so I think you can't approach this talk like it's a standard TED talk. About point 2, I don't think she needed a proof for wipers for glasses, she did that on second grade for god's sake. And she talked about the awards she got, what kind of proof do you want? A Turkish paper about her success which you won't understand anything? Though I agree with your last point. She was talking about herself throughout the talk, no scientific information about her discovery whatsoever.

      Creating bio plastic from banana peals not bananas is an amazing achievement, waste is one of the main problems of Earth, and her project can create bio plastic from an organic waste as banana peals are not used and not a food source unlike current bio plastic sources, this project changes the World by creating great solution for plastic waste problem.
