I just bought a 1997 Lexus LX 450 (80 Series Land Cruiser) + My FIRST Maintenance failure

  • This is an inaugural post to document “ground zero” so to speak on my new to me 1997 Lexus LX450. This vehicle has 3 previous owners, no wrecks, and only 154,000 miles on its original FZJ80 motor. It was completely assembled by Toyota in Japan, and was only available in 1996 and 1997.
Plans we have for this truck include:
•Baseline the engine bay where I can confidently drive it from Texas to New York, California, Florida, or Washington.
    •Add a 2.5” Old Man Emu lift
    •BF Goodrich All Terrain tires
•Decide on staying nostalgic or fully kitting this out for overlanding.

When I was born there were only 48 states. I have built and collected many classic and collectable cars since the 1960's. My Lexus LX450 triple lock is the only one that I did not let slip through my fingers. With over 500,000 miles, she is still an absolute joy and pleasure to drive. It still is a real and personal experience to simply turn the key and watch her come alive. She is how all vehicles should have been built.

@@shootandcruise Take the EGR valve off and clean the carbon buildup out of the passageway. This hardly ever gets done by anybody and do yourself a favor and do not "blank off" the EGR valve. Expect to put a head gasket on her around 300,000 miles. Marlin Crawler makes an axle seal that is better than the original. It separates the front differential gear grease from the wheel bearing grease.

Love the LX450. Funny , I bought my 96 FZJ80 from Austin as well - drove it back to western Colorado - no rust too - it was a California truck, you are lucky about the seats - I did the gears, I re did the leather on the 1st row and 2nd row seats - I replaced all the engine seals, - and on and on - a lot of fun projects - for a fam of 4 adventures - 275k on the engine - it drives so smooth - enjoy! Two tone leather seats and the fake wood panel are also different. But its the exact same Land cruiser 80 series. For the seats, i had the same problem and i found is the plastic gear inside the plastic corners. You have to open it and replace it.
