@@SleeplessFailure The love of pets IS definitely more honest than that of most humans. The reason I highlighted bunnies is that, being prey animals, they are naturally more suspicious of a predator's (e.g. human's) motives, so to gain their affection has an added dimension of difficulty and thus honor of achievement.
Plus, cats and Komodo dragons don't care if you live or die. ;)

I wish I had known large corporate pet stores do not know bunnies well at all and will sell things bad for bunnies. My Ozzy lived between 6 to 7 years till I lost him to stasis. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt he would have lived longer if I knew not to give him yogurt drops, those sticks with seeds on them, and put him in a cage. All packaging had bunnies on them. Thankfully, the internet knowledge improved and channels like yours exist and my 2 nine year old buns, Sophie and Lulu, are thriving now.

Lennon baby pics are a highlight of this video!!!!! Our Bun changed our lives - he costs about a car payment every month in vegetables, food, and litter. He requires multiple litter box cleanings a day. Rabbits require an exotic vet (very expensive). I wouldn’t do anything differently (three-plus years later), and probably will ALWAYS have a rabbit moving forward. I hope our Bun lives to be 15!!!!
I had a vet bill of $3.5K once. Two days in the hospital for GI stasis and e.cunniculi.

@@lazyhomebody1356 Thank you. We’re doing our best. He just passed his annual check-up and got his vaccines for the rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD). Note that Lorelei (and Lennon) educated us about that in a prior video. Helpful rabbit-going-to-the-vet hint: BRING A POOP SAMPLE. Our Bun, never normally shy about dropping pellets, wouldn’t cooperate despite his favorite snack (kale). That cost me another hour there and hour back to the vet the next day! Fortunately, all was good.

I was fortunate to have one rabbit who lived to be at least 11 years old (he was a rescue, so we didn't know his exact age). When he reached around 9 we started saying we were in bonus time -- a positive way of saying "who knows how much time we have left, so let's cherish each day." I, too, wish I had known earlier how much more fun it is, and healthier for the bunnies, to have a bonded pair. Over the years we've had three wonderful pairs!

I wish I had known to get a bonded pair, since the bonding can be such a challenge unless you're lucky. We now have 2 but they are not bonded yet, but we are working on it!
Also I wish I knew how much work bunny proofing can be! We have a lot of open shelfs that our bunnies would love to jump into, and climb even higher so it's not enough to just have stuff off the floor. The bunnies will get on sofa table, selfs, radiators, sofa, and try to get even higher if possible. They can also fit into many tiny places, so blocking everything is hard work! In the future we at least know to buy furniture that fits bunny life!
But I love my bunnies and I will figure it all out!

    • @laurabdn2691
      @laurabdn2691 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Honestly my current pair i kept doing everything good to bond them, neutral space, hide outs, veggies etc but male kept harassing (castrated for a month). In the end i just let them roam together in the house, they ran after each other a little and in 2 hours it was over. I am not saying its the best thing to do but sometimes bonding methods dont work, sometimes they need a few hours without any human interventions in the whole space to be able to bond. Ofc stay near until its calm
Il just saying that because i feel like sometimes people spend weeks/months doing bonding methods and it barely gets better, when just let them dealing with each other in their final space usually works.
Also sometimes we panic for nothing we feel like they are fighting hard and we separate when actually its not that deep and separating makes it worse
Every pair is different but i honestly dont think there are lost hopes, most of the time they just need to deal with it alone for a few hours if bonding methods dont work

@@bnnyhlp952 At the moment they have been able to get to know each other with a fence between them. If she gets next to the fence he always tries to bite her.

My most affectionate and attached bunny doesn't like to be pet. He's a rescue and has some trauma related to having his head touched. But all I have to do is hold out my hand and he'll give me bunny kisses (nuzzles)! It may take time to learn each individual bunny's love language, but don't think they don't love you just because they won't hop into your lap like a cat. Lots of bunnies are unfairly abandoned because they aren't "cuddly" enough.

Thank you, Lorelei, for all your educational segments! And yes to all 5. I would add a number 6. I wish I had been educated about E. cuniculi. Apparently so many domestic rabbits are carriers, even though most show no symptoms. My guy was one of the unlucky few. He had a small speck in his eye that was misdiagnosed, kept growing larger, was misdiagnosed by a second vet, and eventually correctly identified by a third vet. By then a mass had taken over a large part of his eye. It was too late to save his eye, but he had a successful surgery and is on the mend.

All great points and things people don't realize! I recently just got a rabbit but she's been easier to care for than my guinea pigs. Her previous owner left her outside because the new cat didn't get a long with her and she was constantly being harassed by owls. They brought her to my vet clinic and tried to euthanize her but lucky my vet talked them out of it and they surrendered her to us. She was nothing but skin and bones. I had never seen an animal in such bad shape! After lots of love and care by the staff she got better, she was spayed and got her vaccine. She went home with my co worker who had another rabbit. But unfortunately it didn't work out both rabbits hated each other. So now she lives with me :) She's litter box trained, doesn't chew on anything but her toys and she has a lot of toys! She's pretty spoiled! She's very adventurous and loves to get into things but not destructive. I enjoy your videos and learned a lot! I didn't expect to get her but I just fell in love with her! I'm glad I found your channel as your videos have helped me prepare for her! Thank you!

@@odalis6138 she’s very friendly toward people. She’s not a cuddly rabbit and she doesn’t like to to touched a lot. But she’ll come up to people and boop them with her nose and take food from them. Idk why she’s like that given what she’s been through. I would expect her to be afraid of people or aggressive. When she stayed at the clinic which is where I work. I interacted with her a lot. So she kind of knew me already before I officially adopted her. We’re still getting to know each other. I’ve had her for a little over a month now. She pretty much rules my household lol

(Not a bunny owner here) A lot of these tips are super great in general for any animal you want to bring into your home. I feel like the allergies one is something even well researched owners may forget about. When I got my first cat as a teen, I had no idea I was allergic to cats (never had much time/interaction with cats prior). It wouldn't have stopped me, I was/am completely willing to make accommodations so both me and my cats can live happily. However, that is an additional layer of commitment some folks don't have and really should be a conscious choice.
If you can, I would recommend you have extensive interactions with the type of animal you want before you get them. For judging temperament of interactions with the species in general, how well you can handle their care situation (litter smell, food smell, ect), and the above mentioned allergies.

I wish I knew how much my bunny was going to change my life. I was going through the toughest time of my life when I got my bunny and he has literally saved my life. He has taken away so much anxiety and pain, however rely on him so much that it makes me so scared and sad to think that he won’t be here forever so whenever he is unwell or not himself the fear becomes debilitating. He is only a year and a half old but I shake at the thought of losing him! I love him so so much and he has done so much for me that I will never be able to thank him enough for. He loves going to the beach and out for walks in his buggy and that has meant I go out more. I’m recently diagnosed autistic and he is my comfort, my home. Anyway obviously my rabbit ,clover,is never going to read this but i love you clover more than your bunny heart will ever know. ❤

We sadly had to give her away to someone who could take proper care of her, (It was for the best, like I said, we couldn't give her a good home with our lack of knowledge at the time.) but now almost 20 years later, we suddenly had a second chance when we were given Buddy, so I did all the research I could, and I'm very glad I can learn so much from you! I would've like to know before getting a bunny as a teenage girl, that my parents have been narcissists and due to the fact that such people have no empathy, they didn't allow me to take it in the house, even when it was cold or helped me with the doctors bills. Additionally I would've like to have known that I suffered from depressions that made it hard for me to care for it regulary.
    A circle of the devil...
My bunny died a lonely/ lonesome death alone in a small cage outside. Even if I think about it now, I have tears in my eyes and I deeply regret, that I have taken it in a disfunctional family.
I should have taken it and brought it to the next shelter...cause it was hold for killing it.
But there is another important aspect: If you live in an area, where you by yourself are not welcome or accepted, people sometimes start to mess around with the animal care ( doctors, shelters or people, who are asked for careing for them, when you are in a hospital, etc. ). They place the problem they have with you on the care for your pet.
In case of narcissists and domestic violence it can happen, that the aggressive person tries to wound your soul by getting aggressive to your pet, without any warning...
Though this I think, we as a society shokld make it possible for outstanders to have a pet and respect or support them with their animsls even if we don't like them as long as they're willed to care well for them...

I've had my rabbit for about 2 years now and I also didn't get 2 rabbits knowing 2 are better than one but at the shelter, they told me that she likes to be alone so it worked out for me since I had to sneak her into the house anyway. One thing I wish I did before getting my rabbit was bunny-proofing my whole house but something I have noticed she only bites the baseboards for my attention so probably if your bunny is doing that she wants you to pet her or play with her.

Just got a 2nd bunny. Midge needs a companion...and even after binge watching "bonding horror stories" & a couple of success stories, somehow I expected that they would meet, look into each other's eyes...and be instant BFFs! Hell no! My timid, sweet, snobby, aloof, slowly but surely becoming comfortable in her surroundings, showing me affection, she was fully litter box trained & she was learning what she should and shouldn't be chewing, where her boundaries were etc. bunny turned into the devils daughter! Her eyes went pitch black. Her lop ears stood straight up. And she let me know, several times, without any doubt, that she hates the new baby! It's been a week. They're in separate rooms. I know it will happen... it must happen. THEY WILL BE BONDED, BY HOOK OR BY BLOODY CROOK! I'm all in. Truly. Just venting... Midge (original, 6 months old mini lop) is acting like the toddler who refuses to accept the new baby (8 week old mini lop / netherland dwarf cross. She is tiny. Really tiny. Gidget!). She has jumped on her, (5 times the size of the poor little thing!) lunged at her, chases her with the intention of hurting her, has become the mean bunny. And she's now reverted to pooping everywhere, chewing everything & just being really naughty. She's rushing at my feet when I try to leave the room. She is not happy. And this new little girl is an angel. So adorable. She comes to me when I call her. Has no problem being picked up and/or being held and walked around with. She wants to be my friend. Midge is being a jealous brat! I got her a friend and she is not interested! Poor little baby! I feel sorry for her because I'm spending so much time trying to appease the angry, newly possessive, naughty, sassy, downright mean, pooping, diva, Midget, she's undone everything she's been taught and is intent on nipping me and/or tripping me over, & anythjng naughty to get my attention. Evil, cute, adorable, manipulative, snobby, bunny! Worse than a 2 year old. Throws tantrums. Gives me the silent treatment. Then attacks my feet! All that means I'm not giving as much time as I should to the new baby. Rearranging living space for the 4th time trying to make everyone (myself & 2 rabbits!) happy. Talk about frustration. This is not going to be a quick fix. She's on a rampage to destroy anything she can get get her teeth on. It's hilarious. Until it's not. Onwards and upwards I go. I imagine I'll be whinging again, or, fingers crossed, updating about their beautiful friendship! "Midget and Gidget!" The story begins!
    Pray for me! Lol

I wish I knew the full extent of how anxious they can be, especially about being picked up...I love my rabbit dearly. But it has been a journey when it comes to things like nail trims.People need ti understand that especially if they're rescuing an adult with a past, like mine. For number #4: We got two rabbits originally, (we got them from a breeder, but I don’t regret it, I know better now, and they were brothers.) and they lived in cages. Carrots and Pwolly, (me and my brother were young when we named them. Unfortunately, Pwolly passed after about a year. He had underlying health problems we never got checked. We didn’t have a vet that cared for rabbits where we are, and we wish we had gone the 1 and a half too the nearest one. Carrots is now 7, 8 in February, and is living a great life. He’s in an exercise pin in my room, a decent 3x2 space, and is let around the room frequently. It took learning, but we improved. We thought they were simple first pets, like most do, but they aren’t. Carrots is living a happy life now. I thank your channel a lot for what I know now.
