QOD: MCM training build last August/september, 7 straight 80-85 mile weeks in the Texas heat with no rest day and not enough recovery time. I crossed a threshold and suddenly I Couldn’t sleep, had anxiety, I had dip in performance, muscle soreness wouldn’t go away, I was cooked! This year I think I need that Dad Plan you created. What a beaut. 2025 Changes: 1 day off no matter what. Second, subscribing to the down week every 4th week or so. Lastly, I’m training “through my races” - meaning yes I taper, but I’m treating them as the building block for the A race, which im never going to run because there is no A race to “over prioritize.” Example - I just ran an all out half in 1:20:35 as I train for Boston. I trained for it, it was a max effort, but I didn’t peak the mileage at 70-80 miles or overthink anything
I may be over reaching now but we will see! Had surgery last year on my shoulder so I’m getting back into things. I’m going for a lifetime PR at the Colfax half marathon in Denver in May. Hoping for sub 1:25, current PR is 1:27 from last year. Hoping for the best. Good to see another post from you Seth! Keep it up brother
Great content, as usual, and highly relevant. Coming back from injury, having tried to come back too quickly recently - overreaching! Planning pb in a half …and still very new to running so your content is pitched perfectly.
My last marathon training block, last fall - I definitely toe'd the line (maybe even toes-over) of overtraining. My HRV tanked, I was always tired. Most times my legs would do what they needed to, but I was wiped out bigtime and I knew it. I knew before this that more than 1 speed day / week was pushing it, but in this block I took my pace runs to the longest mileage yet, and I ran my long runs at a faster pace than ever before. I think I've now figured out that a 20-week block is too long for me. I'll stick to 16 weeks, maybe 18 tops. I don't know what else I need to tinker with to 'fix' things... because part of me doesn't know if it needs fixing. I just need to keep building the engine and making my legs stronger overall. I'm taking this first half of this year to just run mileage and have some fun at some trail events, and will get back to road marathon in the fall.
QOD: Seattle Half Marathon couple years ago; tried to up my long runs too quickly (~24 miles) before dialing in the nutrition… end up running out of energy, super slow pace, failed workouts, and the race was sub-optimal as a result
QOD: ah just now! Getting back into it after a sizeable break and while I thought I was being conservative with volume clearly my knee disagreed. Runners knee has set in. I know what’s caused it (imbalances) so mobility and strength exercises have commenced.
Seth, do you still train if you have a cold or feel a bit sick? I have a hard time skipping days so even if I'm feeling kinda sick, I tend to get out and run anyway; is that a bad idea?
