Tony, remember that one man's junk is another man's treasure. Rather than fill the landfill with your unwanted stuff, you should remind the kids to come take what they want and then have a "garage" sale there in the garage. Perfect time since you've moved, you don't need to worry about privacy. We know that you have a kind heart and we'd all love to see how many people that you could bless.
That is really smart that Jenny built time in to get the new house ready and go through all the stuff at the old house. We have so much junk in this house after living here over 30 years. That includes stuff from both our kids who moved out. We need to start purging, but it is sort of overwhelming.
I own at least 454 LEGO sets (per my Brickset inventory). I used to save the boxes. I had stacks of flattened boxes stored in various corners of the house. Then one day I asked myself a question: "What are they for?". I'm never going to sell my sets, so I'll never need the boxes to enhance resale values. They are just something to store and take up room. So they all went into the recycle bin. Every last one of them. I'm about to smash my new UCS Tie Interceptor box into the recycle bin. For those who say you should keep the boxes, ask them how much they'll pay you for them. No one really wants them.
There is no used LEGO box market. No one wants them. It's just cardboard for recycling. If you were correct, there would be empty boxes for sale on Ebay - and there aren't any boxes for sale on Ebay.
Kept the boxes, huh? I'm not one to gloat . . . or pat myself on the back . . . just the knowledge that I helped guide you in the right direction is enough for me.
Don't forget the final walk through the house. Check the cupboards and drawers. I found a couple of important items lurking at the back of cupboards in our last move. The garage sale is a good idea. When clearing out our family home, we also gifted stuff to assorted family members who would use it, donated tools to the local Men's Shed, and then to charity. They actually collected a truck load of the bigger items. There was a lot that sadly still wound up in the trash, but the bulk of things found new homes.
I’ve moved 2x in last year. It hurt to see some of my stuff go. But it needed to happen for downsizing. I’m not settled yet, but hoping to get there. Keep up the hard work and best of luck.

Take photis of what you've got in your storage room. Just saw someone had a heap if lego stolen and they're having hassles with the insurance company. Photos are goid and easy proof of what was in there.
Have a great trip and enjoy the cooler weather. Today are high in California is 85 low of 59 and humidity 26%. You and Jenny Both Deserve sometime without moving all those boxes.

If I may make a suggestion?? Down the road you may want to put plastic over the shelving units with the exposed LEGO if you plan on using that storage unit for an extended period of time?? You will be surprised how much dust can collect in those storage units. This can be done down the road after the move. I think you will be happy you did. Again this is just a suggestion. Thanks

If you ever sell it, a buyer might prefer it come in the original box along with original instruction booklet. It may mean a few extra bucks on the sale.
I hear you about renting an outdated house. Same here. We wanted to retire in Florida but it may be too late…congested and cost. We will be facing a purge in the future. Donate wherever possible and remember you can’t take it with you. Enjoy California our backyard! 🛳️😊

You may want to invest in some tarps to keep dust and water off of those sets & boxes. Those units are notoriously famous for leaking.

Yes. We found some well reviewed air mattresses that deploy on a frame. I can roll the build table out.
