Good question. This role has never been in Edita's repertoire. She sang this opera only once for this (studio) recording and only because Nikolaus Harnoncourt asked her specifically. (years later he asked her to record another role which was even more out of her fach. She smartly declined that invite).
When it comes to singing, I ask "WWED?" What would Edita do? She really took care of her voice to have such performance longevity. Teacher tip: If studying this aria, don't look at the video; just listen. The lip sync on this film is making me nuts technique-wise.

Gruberova was the finest leggero of her generation, making child's play even out of the frightful difficulties of Zerbinetta and Aminta (Die schweigsame Frau). However, a Fiordiligi she was not. Barring the triplets in the stretta, it must be admitted that the florid requirements of Come scoglio are not overly strenuous. The overriding requirement of this aria is a strong chest register, and that item Gruberova just did not possess. As with Joan Sutherland, Gruberova's focus on the extreme upper register robbed her of a usable chest register (in Bernd Weikl's words, 'When you pull the bedclothes up to your chin, it leaves your feet out in the cold'). This is not so important in roles like Zerbinetta and Olympia, but for Fiordiligi, who spends much of her time below the staff, it is fatal. The only soprano of the last forty years who possessed all the vocal requirements for a successful Fiordiligi is Roberta Alexander. It is a shame that Harnoncourt and Ponnelle did not manage to cast her in the part.
Love Gruberova, but Fiordiligi wasn't for her: she had got too high tessitura. You have to be a tout-court soprano with Fiordiligi. If only Callas had sung one of the Fiordiligi arias, to me among of the most difficult in the whole repertoire (I think the role is the archetype of dramatic coloratura as Norma), I would be a really happy person. She had all the arias required: wholly developed technique and capability to portrait such a complex voice and character as Fiordiligi. Her way of singing coloratura was the perfect match with these arias: deep, faceted, tasteful and intense, that strikes immediately your heart. So sad she recorded none of the arias :(
This is exactly the kind of opera DVD I would avoid. The singing is not spontaneous (unlike in a staged or concert production) and the sets and production are just boring to watch.

Callas couldn't have sung Mozart. Mozart is supposed to be beautiful.
It's great singing and she is a great soprano but this production is dubbed. She's miming to a track. Its pointless to me.
Is there a single opera movie where it was not handled like this - the singers lip-synching to their own pre-recorded singing? I don't think so.
