Mar-Mar’s betrayal doesn’t even feel like a true betrayal. Feels more like she was driven by her own hubris and fear of losing likely the two closest friends she’s ever had. Of course, I’m not excusing what she did but I guess I understand her on a better level. I love her so much. 😭
Yeah, I like that during True Colors, Marcy''s reveal is made out to be as bad as what Sasha did because of how shocked Anne becomes, but then as Anne gets time to think about it she will probably realize that Marcy was only half as bad as Sasha because Sasha had less reason to team up with Grime than Marcy had to team up with Andrias (although Sasha being imprisoned in an old castle in a swamp as soon as she gets to Amphibia while Marcy gets to explore a majestic palace in a waterfront city does give Sasha some more excuse for being grateful enough to Grime to be loyal to him)
I completely agree. While her actions weren’t right you can understand why she did it. You feel bad for her. You can also understand why Anne and Sasha would be upset by that as well

This is one of the main reasons a lot of people headcanon marcy as autistic, including myself. Its not so much her being "toxic" as just a general lack of awareness of others while shes wrapped up in her special interest, which seems to be puzzle games. this also plays into her insecurities regarding anne and sasha, as some autistic people find it hard to make friends or relate to others. she was simply scared and made a rushed decision, which was also partly directed by andrias.
I wouldn't even call Marcy's betrayal as a "betrayal". Sure, she planned behind her friends' backs to continue their adventures rather than coming back home, but I don't think she would have really, like, _forced_ them to follow her. She's not Sasha. She thought that, once explained her reasoning, they would have followed her and lived happily ever after. She was naive and delusional, but once hit with the crude reality of the two of them _not_ wanting that, after a bit of desperation like the one we saw (albeit probably a bit less dramatic), I think she would have realized the gravity of the situation and would have come back on her steps. That, of course, until Andrias showed his True Colors...
@@fictionverse7292 She didn't even believe it would have worked. Did she _hope_ it would have worked? Sure. It _is_ technically her fault? Also yes. But it was the delusion of a teenager who was fantasizing an escapism without even believeing it would have been possible. And about the lie regarding going home, as I said I doubt she would have gone through with it once she knew how much the other two would have been opposed to it.
Despite her toxic and deceptive actions, I still can’t help but feel bad for Marcy, she’s such a likeable character and she clearly wasn’t in the right state of mind when she manipulated the events to send the three to amphibia, she isn’t purposely trying to hurt her friends, only trying to live out the fantasy world she wants to live with her friends Also she’s just so adorable so I feel obligated to defend her
I mean it's easy enough to defend her since she's clearly not a bad person. She was a naive and distraught child that made a terrible and impulsive decision. She hadn't intended to hurt anyone, and was able to realise that's exactly what she had done when the truth was revealed. There was nothing bad about her intentions, even if her actions were bad, and her motivations were understandable given the circumstances she was in. She's suffered the consequences of her actions, and it looks like they're gonna drag her through the mud some more with the possession shit, so she deserves a happy ending when everything is said and done.
There’s still an air of uncertainty on whether the Night will truly make her into its Vessel and from the Season 3 trailer with Yunnan and Olivia carrying Marcy. What if that was intentional on Andrias part I wonder?

4:25 I mean she was *considering others* , but, in true Marcy Wu fashion, became so tunnel-visioned in doing a thing that she neglected an important detail (the bog). It's like how I love the character flaw in Sasha is her narcissism, but she does it in a way that's not the typical supervillainous sociopathic narcissism you might see in cartoons, but that she *does* care about people, but once she gets it in her head how she wants things to play out, she'll say "no, we're doing it my way, they'll thank me for this later." Like "No, Anne can't go home and have her birthday with her family, we're going to do what I want her to enjoy, which is so much better because I thought of it."
Maybe a few prequel episodes would suffice, a lot of good shows take breaks from the main character's point of view to see the other's perspective. also makes me think what Anne would be like as a side character..

Although I wouldn't want to call my favorite character "toxic", I do have to agree. Her toxicity isn't as harmful as Sasha's, where she tries to control every situation she and her friends end up in, but she can unintentionally harm her friends. Matt had said in a stream that Marcy's life wasn't all perfect, so it makes me question if her parents are truly bad, or in some aspects strict and don't really take Marcy's opinion into consideration. Her fear of being alone comes true, despite her attempts at preventing it. She ends up being alone even though she tried preventing the move and going back to Earth. I hope we get a lot of Marcy and Sasha development, and see Marcy reconnect with her friends. Hope we also see what Sasha and Marcy's home lives were like compared to Anne's. I'm excited to see Mar Mar again. I absolutely love Marcy!!!
I knew she was going to betray Anne (after all, Matt Braly warned us about her toxicity being a major spoiler), but I thought it was because she wanted to be a “somebody in a RPG-like world” rather than a “complete nobody back on Earth” (even Anne described her as “the clumsiest person alive” which is not exactly a nice way to introduce your best friend). I’m glad that it turned out to be something sympathetic and in itself not necessarily a bad thing as long as you don’t push it too far. Anyway Marcy Wu is similar to Luz Noceda. They are both adorable nerds who struggle to stay in the reality, they both used to be miserable in their previous life back on Earth, and both decided to stay on the “other world” on purpose for reasons who sound selfish on paper, but they are in reality sympathetic. However, there are some differences between the two of them: 1) Marcy wanted to stay in Amphibia with her only friends out of desperation at the thought of getting separated from them because of his father’s new job out of state, and hated the idea of being alone. And it’s heavily implied that her relationship with her parents is not a happy one (but it’s too soon to say “they are abusive towards Marcy”, we need to wait and see if it gets explored in Season 3). Furthermore she was backstabbed by the people she thought she could trust them. 2) Luz, on the other hand, while she chose to stay in the Demon Realm to live her witch fantasies at first, she thought it would last for a summer, and never expected she would found a Found Family, some friends who instead of making fun of her eccentricity accept her for who she is, and most of all, even a girlfriend. But she was forced to destroy the portal to delay Belos’s plan, and she did want to find a way to go back home. If anything, the reason why she wants to come back is her mother who, despite they don’t always see eye-to-eye, they love each other.
With luz and the portal, I’m sure Marcy would want to find a way back home if she was against something evil (saw Andrias’ intentions). Luz wasn’t looking for a way home until she was forced to because of Belos (finally encountering the emperor) and because he had plans to invade the other world. Marcy didn’t have that catalyst so of course she’d want to stay. Luz would want to stay if she wasn’t forced to go back to save her mother
I hope season three could help with this issue It's pretty clear that Marcy suffered social anxiety and seeing sasha and Anne as a comfortable group as lasting repercussion Marcy could see the errors of her toxic trait and try to correct it and make up for what's she done not just for Anne and sasha but mostly herself

Along with a few pics in the season 3 trailer, specifically Anne’s journal which will be a heartbreaking scene.
She definitely already realized and did all she could to fix it. She literally sacrificed herself for her friends, went to save sprig, and gave anne the portal back home to make up for her mistake. I'm excited to see what her relationship with anne and sasha will be like in season3
Surely she was wrong. But we are also made to understand that the relationship that Marcy and Sasha have with their parents is very toxic. I mean Anne missed her parents, it shows that their relationship is healthy. While Sasha and Marcy not only don't miss their parents but find it okay to be in another world to escape home. Maybe I wanna stay here and rule a kingdom." That she doesn't miss her family? Another quite revealing phrase is "my box, my rules" a clear reference to the phrase "my house, my rules". Then there is the phrase "end of discussion" it is strange to hear that from a child, but from adults ... Then there is the phrase "stay with your friends who love you" (when she has to convince Anne not to come home for his birthday) strange phrase right? It is as if she meant "stay with those who really love you not with your parents" there would be other phrases from Sasha ... As for Marcy it is important to look at the details, (for example how the contacts are saved in the address book) 👑 Sasha👑 DAD. When Marcy runs away from home You can hear the sound of something breaking , may have been Marcy who broke something, or not ... Neither parent runs after Marcy to make sure she is okay. Also Marcy has known Anne since they were about four, right? Could it be that Marcy's parents didn't know her daughter's best friend's birthday? The same friend since she was four? There are two options 1 either they knew it and didn't give a damn, (why ruin a day like that for their daughter ?!) 2 they didn't know and that means lack of dialogue (for example in the fridge of the Boonchuy family there is the favorite ice cream by Marcy) Could it be that Anne's parents know Marcy's favorite food while Mr. and Mrs. Wu don't even know when Anne's birthday? (I apologize for my very bad English)

I always felt that Sasha spoke kind of strangely at times, and you hit the nail on the head: she talks like a parent in control. Her controlling tendencies must have come from somewhere. If she's treated like this at home, treating her friends in the same manner, to give HER some of her own control, makes sense. The cycle of abuse (I don't know if I'd go far enough to say she abuses her friends, but you get what I mean) in a way. And I definitely get the implication that Marcy doesn't have an awesome relationship with her parents. Even if they'd told her they were moving due to their job, the fact that she wants to stay in Amphibia and doesn't even think about them, is somewhat telling.
@@joyc.e.7511 Yes, that would explain Sasha's behavior, she is not justifiable anyway, you can't use the excuse of a difficult past to hurt other people, but it sure makes us understand why she always behaved like this. Sasha grew up in a loveless family with people who didn't appreciate her for who she is. It is true she is manipulative, but she is also determined, courageous, protective, she would give her life for her friends (in fact when toads tower collapses she let herself go and if Grime hadn't been there to save her she would have died there, how desperate she can be to try and kill herself?) It is no coincidence that she and Grime are so close, Grime appreciated Sasha for who she is, complimented her on her skills and gave her recognition, that's why she does not want to go home, because she would not only leave Amphibia but also Grime (he has rather questionable methods but he is not toxic to her) is sad to say, but Grime probably cares a lot more about Sasha than his real parents.
To be honest I was mixed on this, I was crying over Marcy’s fear of being alone and for being the one who knew what the box could do and over her betrayal by Andrias since this wasn’t the outcome she wanted and because all she wanted was to keep everyone together desperately whatever the cost. I know what that’s like.
I was actually just thinking about this! it's very interesting that throughout the entirety of the second season, marcy never once gets a narrative of her own. unlike with sasha in eps like toadcatcher and even battle of the bands, we don't get any insight as to what marcy's thinking, her fears and insecurities and motivations behind her actions. episodes that should've been focused on here weren't; with the first temple focused more on anne and hop pop, new wartwood told mostly through anne's perspective, and maddie and marcy being about one of maddie's flaws, not marcy. as such, we mostly see her character the way that everyone else in the show does, and i think that's why true colors is so jarring to watch the first time! we the audience - just like anne and sasha - are caught off-guard. it's such wonderful storytelling, and i hope that season three gives us more insight into her personal narrative and experiences!
We were all warned by the season two ops. Marcy is turned away from Anne and Sasha with her hood covering her face. It always made Marcy look like an antagonist or anti-hero like in many anime ops. Yet we still walked into trusting her like how Marcy walks into danger. Props to the Amphibia team for pulling the wool over our eyes while simultaneously warning us we were going to be tricked.
The most interesting about this is how much the show is always directing our attention to Sasha while keeping Marcy's 'toxicity' hidden. They even threw hidden bits and pieces of it throughout season two. We all thought Marcy is a little overconfident and eager and maybe too trusting....until we realized how seriously dangerous those traits are when her friend's lives are put in danger.
My favorite part is that Marcy's involvment was rubbed in our faces since season one and, even tough some people suspected something was of, no one really saw this coming
I love how The three act as human representatives for esch frog species. anne with the frogs, Sasha with the toads, and Marcy with the newts. The species really do fit each of their personalities tho

I think one of the biggest things I take away from Amphibia is that the fear of losing friends almost always leads us to do things that drive them away. To truly maintain a friendship, you need to give eachother understanding, empathy, and build trust. Each of the three girls lack that understanding and empathy towards another to some degree, but Anne is the only one to *learn* from that when she comes to Amphibia and become more considerate and make an effort to understand those around her, she's the only one who doesn't treat being in Amphibia as some kind of game... and she's also the only one who seems to love her family enough to truly want to go home... which makes me wonder about what kind of homelife Sasha and Marcy have and if that's part of why they act the way they do.
when I was watching it for the first time, meeting Marcy and how she was in episodes, I didn’t “click” with her yet She seemed suspicious to me, because I thought that “ Anne had troubles with sasha, but has a perfect friendship with Marcy, no troubles at all? That’s weird, I feel like she’s gonna betray or something” Now, I really love her, and feel SO bad about her manipulation and how it ended up with her being played right into King Andrais’ hands
Yeah, I put Marcy's twist at the same levels of the Creepy Luz's one in The Owl House. We never had clues of her Stranding she and her friends in Amphibia on purpouse until the flashback in the finale, so nobody saw that coming. If you think about it, Disney shows trend to make better twists than the theatrical Disney Movies. Think of the Author of the Journals in Gravity Falls, or the truth about Creepy Luz, or Marcy's truth, these twists were completely unexpected, because they were very well built, by only giving the feeling that something fishy was going on, but we still couldn't immagine how things would have turned out to be. In Disney's animated movies, the twists are always phoned since the beginning, and it feels like the writers don't even try in making things shocking at all. How come that creators of animated shows are more cut for this than the writers of super expensive theatrical movies? Go figure...
There were some clues but it was hard to tell whether marcy was just being weird or not. It would be hard to spot the sus if you weren't a mega sus detector.
There was a couple clues , for example , in the season 2 intro , when the lightning cracks as Anne and Sasha are fighting, Marcy is seen in her hood while holding the Calamity Box , its a little strange that Anne (the one that got the box) doesn’t have it and it is instead with Marcy , who is looking mysterious.
I can actually see myself doing something similar, tbh. I'd of course tell my friends that "hey this box is supposed to have ~magic powers~" but, especially when I was 13, I would've done anything to stay with my friends.
Marcy's problem isn't really selfishness. In her mind, she was doing this for all three of them. Yes, it WAS selfish, but that's not her motivation. She does care about how her actions affect others, but she get's so wrapped up in her own mind, that she is unwilling and/or unable to see the negative effects her actions have. I think the best example of this is the episode where she tried too hard to be accepted by the town, because it's mirroring what she did with the calamity box. It starts with a genuinely nice thought - wanting to help the town by improving the architecture. She loves the way Wartwood looks already, she's not doing it because she thinks it should look different. But it only takes one selfish influence (in this case the mayor) and Marcy getting too invested in what she's doing, for everything to go way too far and ultimately harm those she wanted to help. Her flaw isn't toxic, but it is dangerous. It's hubris, insecurity, lack of awareness and being far too gullible.
True colours hit me right in the guts. At the time, I happened to be really upset and a bit angry that we moved half-way across the globe away from the friends I've known throughout my entire childhood. Marcy's reveal hit too close to home for me.

I love this! I love how you've catalogued all the little hints about Marcy-- I wish I could say I picked those up without help but the ending was already spoiled for me before I ever got to Marcy's introduction so it was kind of easy to see the direction they were taking her when I already knew the destination. Honestly this show is just so genius with subtlety like this. One of the best qualities of Amphibia is that literally nothing is a throwaway. Everything is deliberate and either placed for the future as a reference or directly relating to character growth or story. My best friend's husband started watching Amphibia recently, and seeing some episodes again, looking back, I was shocked by just how much came back for later episodes. Stuff that, during a first watch, you definitely think are throwaway details or lines-- especially if you don't binge the show in a couple of sittings to pick up the details in a later episode-- because if you're like me by then you've forgotten them. The show has serious rewatchability, and so much to talk about! My best friend and I have been really going into detail over character analysis and theories for a couple solid weeks while we're waiting for season 3!
When she remodeled Wartwood I would say it was an adjacent yet independent issue or a combination of flaws at least. She has trouble making friends so she went overboard and acted on the advice of Mayor Toadstool and forgetting the ppossibl consequences such an endeavor could lead to.
"Why can't you just let me go." I've always had trouble fully explaining that line. I knew she had a desire to prove herself but it felt weird that she would be upset about Anne trying to protect her. Until this video. It ties in so well with the fact she doesn't know how to think about how other people will feel about things and I didnt realize until watchin this video. They really did an amazing job with her.
So I take it nobody else thought it was obvious that the person who hadn't seen the longest and had little to no information on besides second hand information was in fact the reason the two other characters that very clearly and earnestly had no idea how they got where they were got them where they were... Because I thought it was pretty obvious.
one of the many things I like about Amphibia is that the filler episodes were necessary. I mean, just TRY to understand Anne's development from a reckless kid to a mature adult WITHOUT watching all the random reckless adventures that taught her being reckless had consequences. Or try to understand Sasha as anything more than a one dimensional bully by ignoring all the side quests she went on which showed she had more depth than that. Or- like this video points out- try getting close to Marcy as a person WITHOUT all the filler episodes that showed she was a kind and caring person who just wanted to be with her friends forever. Her betrayal in true colors would have defined her if not for the filler episodes that showed she wasn't a bad person.
I agree, learning a lot from this showing the side of flaws just to make a pacific person to grow and not to make a repeat that also reflects on how I can relate gives me more of a reason why I love Marcy the way she is

So, I know this is unrelated (I'm aware many of my comments are), but today I turned on the TV in the hopes that The Amazing World of Gumball would be on Cartoon Network. What do I find instead? The Thomas reboot. Turns out, Cartoon Network is devoting a lot of its air time to baby shows now. It's like wherever I go, the accursed reboot follows.

Back in the day, many of the characters and stories drew inspiration from real life, and now, the remake has absolutely no realism whatsoever. I get it's a show about talking trains, but that doesn't mean they have to bounce everywhere.
Much like how Anne exhibits the same ferocity as her mom does in "Anne-terminator", why do I get the sense that Marcy's habit of neglecting to think about how her actions can affect others is also very much like her father? It was her father's decision to move after getting a new job. So there is possibility that he didn't really stop to think about how this change might affect Marcy, leading to her to manipulate Anne and Sasha to activating the box.
i love Marcy so much her action wasn't toxic or selfish. humility and selfishness are very similar but not the same. i mean sure she could have at least told Anne and Sasha. but she wasent toxic at all she litaerlly did it to stay with them.plus she was in distress when she did it so she didnt completely think it through.
I would totally do what Marcy did. I remind myself of Marcy and that's why she's my favorite. But knowing my best friend, Kate, since he's watched Amphibia, he would love it.
marcy didnt really "betray" anne and sasha think about it, the book never said she couldnt return and they would be seperated, she just thought they would all be together when they teleported and could go between amphibia and earth
Even though what Marcy did was screwed, I can't help but sympathize. I moved A LOT growing up. About 4 times from K-12 and sometimes to different countries. Friendships being temporary was a fact of life, but I wished it wasn't that way before moving. Always. I would've done what Marcy did. No doubt about it.

Overall I love Marcy and I would do anything for her if she was my close friend. It’s fine if you don’t understand or don’t like my comment but I know what I’m talking about and that’s fine by me.
Honestly I did "suspect" there was more to Marcy than meet the eyes to the point that "I think" she knew about Amphibia beforehand! Granted even then I didn't really believed that myself (I was going by the "smurg" she make at the flashback scene when Anne look at two at the window before stealing the box) despite making my claim due to lack of proper evidence before True Colour!

But it was the delusion of a teenager who was fantasizing an escapism without even believeing it would have been possible. And about the lie regarding going home, as I said I doubt she would have gone through with it once she knew how much the other two would have been opposed to it.
Despite her toxic and deceptive actions, I still can’t help but feel bad for Marcy, she’s such a likeable character and she clearly wasn’t in the right state of mind when she manipulated the events to send the three to amphibia, she isn’t purposely trying to hurt her friends, only trying to live out the fantasy world she wants to live with her friends

I mean it's easy enough to defend her since she's clearly not a bad person. She was a naive and distraught child that made a terrible and impulsive decision. She hadn't intended to hurt anyone, and was able to realise that's exactly what she had done when the truth was revealed. There was nothing bad about her intentions, even if her actions were bad, and her motivations were understandable given the circumstances she was in.
She's suffered the consequences of her actions, and it looks like they're gonna drag her through the mud some more with the possession shit, so she deserves a happy ending when everything is said and done.

4:25 I mean she was *considering others* , but, in true Marcy Wu fashion, became so tunnel-visioned in doing a thing that she neglected an important detail (the bog). It's like how I love the character flaw in Sasha is her narcissism, but she does it in a way that's not the typical supervillainous sociopathic narcissism you might see in cartoons, but that she *does* care about people, but once she gets it in her head how she wants things to play out, she'll say "no, we're doing it my way, they'll thank me for this later." Like "No, Anne can't go home and have her birthday with her family, we're going to do what I want her to enjoy, which is so much better because I thought of it."

Although I wouldn't want to call my favorite character "toxic", I do have to agree. Her toxicity isn't as harmful as Sasha's, where she tries to control every situation she and her friends end up in, but she can unintentionally harm her friends. Matt had said in a stream that Marcy's life wasn't all perfect, so it makes me question if her parents are truly bad, or in some aspects strict and don't really take Marcy's opinion into consideration. Her fear of being alone comes true, despite her attempts at preventing it. She ends up being alone even though she tried preventing the move and going back to Earth. I hope we get a lot of Marcy and Sasha development, and see Marcy reconnect with her friends. Hope we also see what Sasha and Marcy's home lives were like compared to Anne's. I'm excited to see Mar Mar again.

I knew she was going to betray Anne (after all, Matt Braly warned us about her toxicity being a major spoiler), but I thought it was because she wanted to be a “somebody in a RPG-like world” rather than a “complete nobody back on Earth” (even Anne described her as “the clumsiest person alive” which is not exactly a nice way to introduce your best friend).
I’m glad that it turned out to be something sympathetic and in itself not necessarily a bad thing as long as you don’t push it too far.
Anyway Marcy Wu is similar to Luz Noceda. They are both adorable nerds who struggle to stay in the reality, they both used to be miserable in their previous life back on Earth, and both decided to stay on the “other world” on purpose for reasons who sound selfish on paper, but they are in reality sympathetic.
However, there are some differences between the two of them:
1) Marcy wanted to stay in Amphibia with her only friends out of desperation at the thought of getting separated from them because of his father’s new job out of state, and hated the idea of being alone. And it’s heavily implied that her relationship with her parents is not a happy one (but it’s too soon to say “they are abusive towards Marcy”, we need to wait and see if it gets explored in Season 3). Furthermore she was backstabbed by the people she thought she could trust them.
2) Luz, on the other hand, while she chose to stay in the Demon Realm to live her witch fantasies at first, she thought it would last for a summer, and never expected she would found a Found Family, some friends who instead of making fun of her eccentricity accept her for who she is, and most of all, even a girlfriend. But she was forced to destroy the portal to delay Belos’s plan, and she did want to find a way to go back home. If anything, the reason why she wants to come back is her mother who, despite they don’t always see eye-to-eye, they love each other.
And may eventually allow the villains to use dimensional travel with the results of this accept to stay the fantasies will be the ultimate price.
With luz and the portal, I’m sure Marcy would want to find a way back home if she was against something evil (saw Andrias’ intentions). Luz wasn’t looking for a way home until she was forced to because of Belos (finally encountering the emperor) and because he had plans to invade the other world. Marcy didn’t have that catalyst so of course she’d want to stay. Luz would want to stay if she wasn’t forced to go back to save her mother

Marcy could see the errors of her toxic trait and try to correct it and make up for what's she done not just for Anne and sasha but mostly herself

Surely she was wrong. But we are also made to understand that the relationship that Marcy and Sasha have with their parents is very toxic. I mean Anne missed her parents, it shows that their relationship is healthy. While Sasha and Marcy not only don't miss their parents but find it okay to be in another world to escape home.

Maybe I wanna stay here and rule a kingdom." That she doesn't miss her family? Another quite revealing phrase is "my box, my rules" a clear reference to the phrase "my house, my rules". Then there is the phrase "end of discussion" it is strange to hear that from a child, but from adults ... Then there is the phrase "stay with your friends who love you" (when she has to convince Anne not to come home for his birthday) strange phrase right? It is as if she meant "stay with those who really love you not with your parents" there would be other phrases from Sasha ... As for Marcy it is important to look at the details, (for example how the contacts are saved in the address book) 👑 Sasha👑 DAD. When Marcy runs away from home You can hear the sound of something breaking , may have been Marcy who broke something, or not ... Neither parent runs after Marcy to make sure she is okay. Also Marcy has known Anne since they were about four, right? Could it be that Marcy's parents didn't know her daughter's best friend's birthday? The same friend since she was four? There are two options 1 either they knew it and didn't give a damn, (why ruin a day like that for their daughter ?!) 2 they didn't know and that means lack of dialogue (for example in the fridge of the Boonchuy family there is the favorite ice cream by Marcy) Could it be that Anne's parents know Marcy's favorite food while Mr. and Mrs. Wu don't even know when Anne's birthday? (I apologize for my very bad English)

I always felt that Sasha spoke kind of strangely at times, and you hit the nail on the head: she talks like a parent in control. Her controlling tendencies must have come from somewhere. If she's treated like this at home, treating her friends in the same manner, to give HER some of her own control, makes sense. The cycle of abuse (I don't know if I'd go far enough to say she abuses her friends, but you get what I mean) in a way.
And I definitely get the implication that Marcy doesn't have an awesome relationship with her parents. Even if they'd told her they were moving due to their job, the fact that she wants to stay in Amphibia and doesn't even think about them, is somewhat telling.
@@joyc.e.7511 Yes, that would explain Sasha's behavior, she is not justifiable anyway, you can't use the excuse of a difficult past to hurt other people, but it sure makes us understand why she always behaved like this. Sasha grew up in a loveless family with people who didn't appreciate her for who she is. It is true she is manipulative, but she is also determined, courageous, protective, she would give her life for her friends (in fact when toads tower collapses she let herself go and if Grime hadn't been there to save her she would have died there, how desperate she can be to try and kill herself?) It is no coincidence that she and Grime are so close, Grime appreciated Sasha for who she is, complimented her on her skills and gave her recognition, that's why she does not want to go home, because she would not only leave Amphibia but also Grime (he has rather questionable methods but he is not toxic to her) is sad to say, but Grime probably cares a lot more about Sasha than his real parents.

To be honest I was mixed on this, I was crying over Marcy’s fear of being alone and for being the one who knew what the box could do and over her betrayal by Andrias since this wasn’t the outcome she wanted and because all she wanted was to keep everyone together desperately whatever the cost. I know what that’s like.
I was actually just thinking about this! it's very interesting that throughout the entirety of the second season, marcy never once gets a narrative of her own. unlike with sasha in eps like toadcatcher and even battle of the bands, we don't get any insight as to what marcy's thinking, her fears and insecurities and motivations behind her actions. episodes that should've been focused on here weren't; with the first temple focused more on anne and hop pop, new wartwood told mostly through anne's perspective, and maddie and marcy being about one of maddie's flaws, not marcy. as such, we mostly see her character the way that everyone else in the show does, and i think that's why true colors is so jarring to watch the first time! we the audience - just like anne and sasha - are caught off-guard. it's such wonderful storytelling, and i hope that season three gives us more insight into her personal narrative and experiences!
We were all warned by the season two ops. Marcy is turned away from Anne and Sasha with her hood covering her face. It always made Marcy look like an antagonist or anti-hero like in many anime ops. Yet we still walked into trusting her like how Marcy walks into danger. Props to the Amphibia team for pulling the wool over our eyes while simultaneously warning us we were going to be tricked.
To bad some of us didn't notice!

The most interesting about this is how much the show is always directing our attention to Sasha while keeping Marcy's 'toxicity' hidden. They even threw hidden bits and pieces of it throughout season two. We all thought Marcy is a little overconfident and eager and maybe too trusting....until we realized how seriously dangerous those traits are when her friend's lives are put in danger.
Heh heh... those same traits might just end up saving the day.
My favorite part is that Marcy's involvment was rubbed in our faces since season one and, even tough some people suspected something was of, no one really saw this coming
I love how The three act as human representatives for esch frog species. anne with the frogs, Sasha with the toads, and Marcy with the newts. The species really do fit each of their personalities tho

I think one of the biggest things I take away from Amphibia is that the fear of losing friends almost always leads us to do things that drive them away. To truly maintain a friendship, you need to give eachother understanding, empathy, and build trust. Each of the three girls lack that understanding and empathy towards another to some degree, but Anne is the only one to *learn* from that when she comes to Amphibia and become more considerate and make an effort to understand those around her, she's the only one who doesn't treat being in Amphibia as some kind of game... and she's also the only one who seems to love her family enough to truly want to go home... which makes me wonder about what kind of homelife Sasha and Marcy have and if that's part of why they act the way they do.

Now, I really love her, and feel SO bad about her manipulation and how it ended up with her being played right into King Andrais’ hands
Yeah, I put Marcy's twist at the same levels of the Creepy Luz's one in The Owl House. We never had clues of her Stranding she and her friends in Amphibia on purpouse until the flashback in the finale, so nobody saw that coming.
If you think about it, Disney shows trend to make better twists than the theatrical Disney Movies. Think of the Author of the Journals in Gravity Falls, or the truth about Creepy Luz, or Marcy's truth, these twists were completely unexpected, because they were very well built, by only giving the feeling that something fishy was going on, but we still couldn't immagine how things would have turned out to be.
In Disney's animated movies, the twists are always phoned since the beginning, and it feels like the writers don't even try in making things shocking at all. How come that creators of animated shows are more cut for this than the writers of super expensive theatrical movies? Go figure...
There were some clues but it was hard to tell whether marcy was just being weird or not. It would be hard to spot the sus if you weren't a mega sus detector.
There was a couple clues , for example , in the season 2 intro , when the lightning cracks as Anne and Sasha are fighting, Marcy is seen in her hood while holding the Calamity Box , its a little strange that Anne (the one that got the box) doesn’t have it and it is instead with Marcy , who is looking mysterious.
I can actually see myself doing something similar, tbh. I'd of course tell my friends that "hey this box is supposed to have ~magic powers~" but, especially when I was 13, I would've done anything to stay with my friends.
Marcy's problem isn't really selfishness. In her mind, she was doing this for all three of them. Yes, it WAS selfish, but that's not her motivation. She does care about how her actions affect others, but she get's so wrapped up in her own mind, that she is unwilling and/or unable to see the negative effects her actions have.
I think the best example of this is the episode where she tried too hard to be accepted by the town, because it's mirroring what she did with the calamity box. It starts with a genuinely nice thought - wanting to help the town by improving the architecture. She loves the way Wartwood looks already, she's not doing it because she thinks it should look different. But it only takes one selfish influence (in this case the mayor) and Marcy getting too invested in what she's doing, for everything to go way too far and ultimately harm those she wanted to help.
Her flaw isn't toxic, but it is dangerous. It's hubris, insecurity, lack of awareness and being far too gullible.
True colours hit me right in the guts. At the time, I happened to be really upset and a bit angry that we moved half-way across the globe away from the friends I've known throughout my entire childhood. Marcy's reveal hit too close to home for me.

I love how you've catalogued all the little hints about Marcy-- I wish I could say I picked those up without help but the ending was already spoiled for me before I ever got to Marcy's introduction so it was kind of easy to see the direction they were taking her when I already knew the destination.
Honestly this show is just so genius with subtlety like this.
One of the best qualities of Amphibia is that literally nothing is a throwaway. Everything is deliberate and either placed for the future as a reference or directly relating to character growth or story.
My best friend's husband started watching Amphibia recently, and seeing some episodes again, looking back, I was shocked by just how much came back for later episodes. Stuff that, during a first watch, you definitely think are throwaway details or lines-- especially if you don't binge the show in a couple of sittings to pick up the details in a later episode-- because if you're like me by then you've forgotten them.
The show has serious rewatchability, and so much to talk about! My best friend and I have been really going into detail over character analysis and theories for a couple solid weeks while we're waiting for season 3!
I must admit, Marcy soundly fooled me, and I'm the type of guy who can usually see ANY plot point coming.
When she remodeled Wartwood I would say it was an adjacent yet independent issue or a combination of flaws at least. She has trouble making friends so she went overboard and acted on the advice of Mayor Toadstool and forgetting the ppossibl consequences such an endeavor could lead to.
Every time Charles calls Marcy adorable - "I see what you did there. Won me over."
"Why can't you just let me go."
I've always had trouble fully explaining that line. I knew she had a desire to prove herself but it felt weird that she would be upset about Anne trying to protect her. Until this video. It ties in so well with the fact she doesn't know how to think about how other people will feel about things and I didnt realize until watchin this video. They really did an amazing job with her.

one of the many things I like about Amphibia is that the filler episodes were necessary. I mean, just TRY to understand Anne's development from a reckless kid to a mature adult WITHOUT watching all the random reckless adventures that taught her being reckless had consequences. Or try to understand Sasha as anything more than a one dimensional bully by ignoring all the side quests she went on which showed she had more depth than that. Or- like this video points out- try getting close to Marcy as a person WITHOUT all the filler episodes that showed she was a kind and caring person who just wanted to be with her friends forever. Her betrayal in true colors would have defined her if not for the filler episodes that showed she wasn't a bad person.
You should do more Amphibia videos. Can't wait to see season 3 episodes. And yeah marcy doe get possed (becomes a villain)according to the trailer.

So, I know this is unrelated (I'm aware many of my comments are), but today I turned on the TV in the hopes that The Amazing World of Gumball would be on Cartoon Network. What do I find instead? The Thomas reboot. Turns out, Cartoon Network is devoting a lot of its air time to baby shows now.
It's like wherever I go, the accursed reboot follows.

Much like how Anne exhibits the same ferocity as her mom does in "Anne-terminator", why do I get the sense that Marcy's habit of neglecting to think about how her actions can affect others is also very much like her father? It was her father's decision to move after getting a new job. So there is possibility that he didn't really stop to think about how this change might affect Marcy, leading to her to manipulate Anne and Sasha to activating the box.

Even though what Marcy did was screwed, I can't help but sympathize. I moved A LOT growing up. About 4 times from K-12 and sometimes to different countries.
Friendships being temporary was a fact of life, but I wished it wasn't that way before moving. Always. I would've done what Marcy did. No doubt about it.

Despite the whole thing with Marcy’s betrayal to me I think that it’s not a “betrayal” but I technically understand why she did this. I technically still have my own imaginations and always wanted To go to a fantasy world where I can get away from my problems but also maybe bring some one I know to help them be happy to also get away from there problems and yet that’s exactly what Marcy did (except not sure if relatable or makes sense or not) and let’s just think for moment you had lots of problems going on in your life that you wish you were in your fantasy world but reality still found you and and your worst fears and problems also still found you but the only way to fix all of these problems and be in reality again is if someone just might give you a hand. Overall I love Marcy and I would do anything for her if she was my close friend. It’s fine if you don’t understand or don’t like my comment but I know what I’m talking about and that’s fine by me.
I relate to her on a seveirly personal level, I would probably have done the exact same thing in her shoes, we are damn near identical in everything
Honestly I did "suspect" there was more to Marcy than meet the eyes to the point that "I think" she knew about Amphibia beforehand! Granted even then I didn't really believed that myself (I was going by the "smurg" she make at the flashback scene when Anne look at two at the window before stealing the box) despite making my claim due to lack of proper evidence before True Colour!
