Golly, yes! I was trying to work on building our drystone retaining wall, with my husband, and the new neighbours music was blaring from their new, industrial work shed. Ruined it for me. You need silence when positioning irregular shaped rocks, into irregular shaped gaps. We used to have the wind, leaves and birds this channel loves to share. I miss it.

I am amazed at the amount of work you have done with a minimum amount of equipment except for hand tools. You are a very hard working person and you should be proud of your accomplishments. Your episodes are not only educational but they have some amazing scenery and carry a good message. Cali is a treasure and she must be a great companion. Thank you for a great series.

Hi everyone, thanks for watching. FYI, for those who have so patiently waited for my Cabin Life t-shirts to be available, you can now order shirts, hoodies, mugs and totes by clicking on this link. bit.ly/2Ku1Jtj
We have a crazy hot week starting today, getting up to 46 Celsius (114F) with the humidex. I have a feeling I'm going to spend more time on and in the water this week than working! I think I'll take Cali out for a few canoe rides.

I like what you talked about at the end of the video. Brother, i live on Long Island , New York and Government is trying to prevent us from going off the grid here also. They are pushing for solar power , but keep us connected to the grid. Utility companies are in bed with politicians to keep you reliant on them.

Hahaha mate you are seriously gifted when it comes to wood...but that is the ugliest BBQ I've ever seen...and you're going to have a real job adding a stone veneer that looks good and remains attached.
IMO better options would be a rendered sand finish, form it up and build a new wall around it (properly this time) or (what I thought you were going to do) clad it with split logs and a nice timber top each side .
I honestly cringed several times when you poked the bolts into the concrete and then tried to keep them straight. The bolts need more than just the head to anchor into the concrete and you can buy premade things (4 x threaded rod with a 'cage') used for casting into concrete slabs and later bolting down a steel column.
I mean no offence, in fact my ugliest BBQ comment was meant as good natured dig. You're incredibly talented when it comes to all things wood. But concrete and rocks...not so much. Yet. :-P

Watching your videos brings it all back, and puts me there once again. I am so grateful for your videos. Thank you for making them. (Letting us hear the birds and the Loons makes it lovely.) Hi Shawn..what a great job of your outdoor kitchen. It will be so nice to use too in the hot summer when you don’t want to heat up your cabin. If you get hold of an Avon lady, maybe your wife knows of one, get some skin so soft bath oil...has to be oil...and it truly works for mosquitos! My husband and I when we went up camping way up on the Magnetawan River,we always took it to stop deer flies, and black flies, and mosquitos from biting. It works but it is oily! I love watching you work and making things....and making a beautiful place to live. So peaceful.❤️👍

Terri, millennials are not the ones who filled the atmosphere with CO2 and polluted the environment for decades, they often work two jobs to afford their rent due to the lack of wage increases in the last 40 years, they have massive college debt because of massive inflation to education costs, and they have to fix all those problems because of the selfish baby boomers. Of course there are some awesome baby boomers I've admired but the facts remain that baby boomers lean conservative and now that they are fading away that demographic will have less and less influences on elections, a good thing.

As someone who makes videos on a variety of channels I gotta say I think he will appreciate that. Construction of anything also takes much longer as you have to stop to set up shots but also hold your body in odd ways to make the process visible to the camera. It's a thankless job cause if you do it right people don't even register how much work it takes

The sense I get from watching these videos is a person so engrossed in his work that he’s truly living in the present moment free from a noisy mind that relives the past or is anxious about the future. That’s where are best work comes from, that’s where athletes find the flow state...right now is always the best place to be. This shows in the quality of your camera work as well which make these videos so enjoyable to watch and coincidentally has a similar effect on the viewer. My anxious mind shuts the hell up for a bit while I watch your show and try to pick up some tips and tricks from your work. Thanks for the great content!

I know you have a few cast iron items but if you want more - this week at Costco out here in BC they have a 3.5 inch deep 10 inch frying pan with a frying pan lid 1,5 inch deep ( Lodge of course) $60 - i thought it was good deal so picked it up - so two pans - cooked my eggs on it while watching you -

    Two things.
1: use masonry cement that uses an fine aggregate. Make sure your sand to cement mixture is correct for your climate.
    2. You could ave used the scafold above your oven to drop masonry lines for your post corners.
I grew up a stone mason. Make sure you have a nice pile of stone before you ever start your project. When you think you have enough double it.
It would have been nice to see you bring in some fire brick from town for your fire box on the oven.
    Now for the praise.
You did an awesome job on that. I know your not happy with how the Vander looks and that is okay. I can tell you were improvising a lot. You put a lot of heart into your projects and I apretiate the fact that your out there giving it a go.

Hi Shawn : I just had what you may consider a weird idea. What you are currently working on is so unique that while it may be copied it can never be repeated. You were kicking some partially burnt logs in place to cook your meal & it struck me just how unique the moment was. Enjoy this while it can last for this event cannot be repeated. We may chase it for the rest of our lives & that's okay but thanks for this time . Brian 78

Brian, that's not a weird idea at all. I find, esp living alone in a rural setting, that the very things we have taken for granted when we were living a more city-oriented live and overlooked now become most highly valued.

I really appreciate what you said at the end about learning skills to be self reliant. I agree completely. As a retired widow, I live somewhat comfortably, but I have started a vegetable garden on my little plot of land at my home. Right now I am reaping the harvest and saving money to make money stretch in other areas. Since I lost my husband, Mr. Fix It, I am having to learn skills, handling a mitered saw, drill, hammer and nails, to fix things around the house myself. And now, with the US government leadership in shambles, I have lost faith and confidence that they will protect and provide needed services that are affordable. Doing the "Self-reliance" thing is so much more vital now than ever before. Thank you for your videos.

I make a homemade after bite lotion that helps a lot from bentonite clay, sea salt, baking soda, water and essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile and comfrey. Draws out a lot of the toxins and infection, calms the irritation and takes down the swelling very quickly.

Hey Sean, another great video as expected. I just turned 66 last month, and just retired on 6/29/18. I pursued chasing the o-mighty dollar, raised a family with a home and mortgage as well. Last week I planted a vegetable garden that I always wanted to plant but just never slowed down my pace to even start to prepare the soil. For now I look forward to exploring nature, fishing, and camping with my two grandsons so they can start appreciating nature while they are young! You are an inspiration to me now in my golden years to focus on what really is important!

Another great video, Shawn. Really nice angles and editing. As far as your masonry goes, I have a suggestion that you may already be aware of. I use a large cone shaped poly mason's squeeze bag to get the mud into all those voids once the stones have been set. Then, as the mud begins to set, I strike the joints with the head of a large 10in aluminum rain gutter nail. Then, finish with a coarse brush. Canada (and the US), have a long way to go if we are to make government smaller and less intrusive. The pronoun police in Ottawa are insane...

    • @MySelfReliance
      @MySelfReliance  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

You are a very calm & spiritual, deep soul on earth & every video shows this. I'm so very happy that you are living your very best life with Cali & now your wife has joined you & I am praying that she discovers she loves living this life as much as you do.
Thank you for sharing your life. I love watching ❤️🙌🏻
