Building Stairs into my Log Cabin from the Outdoor Kitchen, Installing a Pine Countertop and Sink

- This week at the cabin, I build stairs into the breezeway and log cabin from the new outdoor kitchen and then glue pine boards together to make 12 feet of countertops. I install the first countertop and a double sink beside the wood cookstove and next to the water tote that will provide rainwater to the kitchen.

I love how on the first swing at the rock (albeit a bit half assed) there were no fucks given, the next swing was full riot head/face protection. Good call, cause that stuff can cause a very preventable injury, and potentially serious one at that.

It's insane how much more pleasing to the eye this cabin is than the old one and I really liked seeing that one get built too, you should send your old horrendous neighbors a thank you letter for helping put you on the track to build this beast of a cabin.

I really love this kitchen, but you know what stops my eyes , that beautiful brick floor in the breezeway. it's just such a pretty color and you know the contrast of wood with a few other elements really make it a true work of art. One of a kind! love the detail around the kitchen steps too.

I am 80 Shawn, I just find so much pleasure in watching you create this beautiful kitchen. I used to go with my dad during school holidays when he built houses. No power tools then. I can smell the wood once again when you saw, drill, etc. My favourite tool was the spokeshave.

I liked the oven in the old kitchen, I hope he builds another one in this kitchen. It was perfect for making bread, pies and a bunch of other stuff with minimal firewood.

I am sure he has many ideas of things to build to make his beautiful wife more comfortable, he’s not done yet, think about the laundry room, the sauna at the old cabin. The room he was making with big windows for her sewing room. His wife and daughters are all lovely ladies.
I TOTALLY LOVE YOUR CARPENTRY SKILLS. You remind me of my dad. He loved building things. If they didn’t turn out the way that he liked, he would start over. Since that my dad is no longer living, I miss seeing him build things.

Same here. My dad was a brilliant carpenter and I loved hanging out in his workshop, holding the lathe and smelling the wood. Furniture was Queen Anne style, carved and etched with leather and gold. Good old days in Beirut Lebanon.
Just got to say making all the cuts you make with a hand saw just blows my mind! Been watching for at least a couple of years and have never seen a skill type saw. I can’t even saw a 2x4 off straight. That you have built all this with a hand saw is just nuts!

I can't say enough how nowadays people seem to think everything needs to be perfect! Perfect trim and perfection in and on everything in their homes, and with one basic construction material...wood! You can make your own home by hand and just look what Shawn has created! In my opinion his cabin and everything else he's made! I believe if more people gave it a shot at the very least, would find that they truly don't need many of the things in there lives they think they do! It's Beautiful Shawn! 🇨🇦🇺🇲💯✌

I've been watching the videos for a while now, specially when you started building this amazing cabin. Is like, you have a perfectly blueprint in your mind on how to put every single board, nail, log on a specific spot. Even when you weren't feeling well, your mind was set on finish the outdoor kitchen. And there it is! That addition is perfect. Brought back so many memories of the last cabin as it all comes together. Working slowly methodically. The beautiful new stove a beautiful clay oven. Looking at the final image I see the potential of slamming your right thigh into the "squared corner of the step landing" when entering to the sink. You could cut that corner back even a radial cut might work better. --The Great and Powerful Oz has Spoken!!!

Many a Canadian homesteaders built summer kitchens like this to keep the home cooler in the heat of summer. Looking wonderful. And oh so practical with pickeling and preserving season starting. So enjoy your progress. Maybe a pizza oven is in your future next summer. Be well stay safe. 😊

Dude, love your stuff. For anyone else building stairs, I might let the treads overhang the stair stringers and the parts that trim out the vertical faces of the stairs.
Gravity fed water to sink or rv pumped water would make this kitchen amazing.
Watching you create those stairs and kitchen sink counter was wonderful, Shawn. You are a real craftsman using hand-tools which are kept in tip-top sharpness. I like that you save shavings, and off-cuts as fuel for your wood stove.

Looks awesome! You may want to soften that corner at the top of the stairs where you'll be using the sink. Hate it when I run into a sharp corner while busy in the kitchen.

Ok stove care take tin foil wadded up scrub top of stove brush off rust add gun blueing to warm stove let dry and add second coat buff some and always add oil after almost every use. PS you don't need to take burnners off. We had a cabin with almost same stove. Yes you can wash cast iron pans lay upside down on hot stove to dry add cooking oil all around and hang up. Love your channel . PS my dog always eats before me and a lot more than cali. God Bless. you both.
