Just to clarify, I may not own many books, but I read a lot of well published documents and guidance to help me with my design. By no means did I learn everything from just the red book, I just use it a lot. 🤣

For all young engineers out there. It is very important to have good mentor who can guide you and help become a good engineer. I have been very unfortunate not to have one, as I have always worked in small firms and it is one of the perks working for a small firm lol.
My copy of Cobb is battered. I've had it for 6years and it's the book I use every single day. I agree it was instrumental in passing my exam. It isn't perfect (there are some mistakes) but every half decent structural engineer I know has one. Other books I recommend are Brohn "Understanding Structural Analysis" and for beginners Seward "Understanding Structure" is a great entry-level text. Arya "Design of Structural Elements" is my go-to for Steel, concrete, timber, and masonry design.
Great Vid Daz! So funny to find out you have just a few books. I've got a personal library of around 2.5k worth of books I've bought over the last 15 years. 2 down falls... 1) you can't carry them all and there's always an overlap in info... 2) EVERYONE USES THEM! lol. Some honourable mentions..? (a) Structural Engineering Desing in Practice by Westbrook & Walker (b) Reinforced Concrete Designers Handbook by Reynolds (Big Red book) (c) Steel Detailers Manual (blue A3 book) by Alan Hayward and Frank Weare (d) Understanding Structural Analysis (by David Brohn) Also, the 'longman Series' books on Amazon that are oldies and used, are to old UK standard, but Do well to take you through methodology, and you can get these for about £3 each. 🤙
Do you know where I can find any worked examples using this book as I've read it but would like to see how it's applied in real world situations. Ideally with all the different materials and in different type of buildings. Example multistorey v normal house.
@everyday dazz Hi bought this book, I find there are some corrections in Bending Moment formulas , For a simply supported beam BMD = wl^2 / 8 , but it's wl/8 .. can you please confirm the same table is not revised in all 3 Editions of book so far...
Because they use capital ‘W’ which means total load so W = w x L Once you sub it it you’ll get wL^2/8 Always get the latest edition of the book. Third edition was known to have a few typos.
Is structural engineering only a privelege for civil engineers? Is it possible for a mechanical engineer to get involved with structures, steel structures?
I’d say so. You’d have maths background so definitely transferable skills. Chartership may be a different story but there are alternative routes to take for sure.

In USA i have seen mechanical engineers pass the civil PE and SE exam and practice has structral or hydraulic engineers.

The purple book I referenced has some good easy examples for foundations to EC7. What kind of foundations where you planning to design?

there are a lot of comments on amazon about the book containing a lot of errors
I’ve found a couple of errors but not that many. Annoying but still worthwhile to buy.
