Frampton had a unique problem. While lots of people were coming to his shows, nobody was really lining up to buy his albums. So what to do?
Finally, the obvious dawned on him. “I need to release a live album!”
He released Frampton Comes Alive. It was a Godzilla success. And the world was never the same again.
First album I ever bought with my own money, on sale for $4.99 at Cat's Records. I played the $#!+ out of those disks. It is still, I believe, the best selling live album ever.
Peter has a great autobiography on audiobook. He’s very likeable but was naive and careless about his own career. It slowed him. He’ll say it was Sgt Pepper remake that did it.
What he said... Frampton Comes Alive ! is a Rock icon, maybe only "one" for Peter and band, but it IS an ICON.
@@stevet5266 and it played at every party
He had another problem. No matter how many times he did it live, it never was as good as the one on "Comes Alive".
This version is good, however the version from Frampton Comes Alive is really the version to listen to. Classic tune that rocked the airwaves when I was a kid.
Well said!
Will listen again as I used to hear it on radio in 80s & 90s and was un-phased, especially after the first time. But this must be at least the 5th reaction I've watched to this same performance, and I've enjoyed them all and been duly impressed, especially with the guitar, and only the last two times with the drumming.
Eh, audience is way to loud on that one.
Absolutely !!!!!
One of the best debut albums of all time, and live another might be Bob seger silver bullet live cheers great reaction
The interplay between Bob Mayo on keys and Frampton on guitar is one of life's beautiful pleasures.
💯
I remember Peter saying somewhere that his intro of Bob that you hear on the album where he says "On the Keyboards , Bob Mayo , Bob Mayo !!" that he loved Bob's playing & that's why he would say his name twice when introducing him at his live shows .
Bob SLAYED on the keys. He fit right inside the pocket. Adding flare when necessary and laying back when required. Icing on the cake!
It's always awesome to see young people's reaction when Frampton gets on the talk-box.
Same here.
But they are left in even more awe when they watch Iron Butterfly perform butterfly Bleu.
It's on the album Metamorphosis released in 1970. The talk box was first available in 69.
Glen Campbell also demonstrated it on TV ( Roy Clark show Maybe) I think in 71. But I've never found it on the internet.
✌️
🤠🏞️🐂
Gents, I recommend this song on the epic Frampton Comes Alive album. It’s a longer version with an extended solo by Bob Mayo on his Fender Rhodes electric piano and lots of great crowd noise which this tv version is missing. Love your reactions!
If you listen closely to the crowd shouts during quiet moments of this live recording, you may hear something that sounds like "Ballard High!". My high school buddy claims that was him shouting. I never quite believed him, but it sure does sound like that is what is being said.
Bob Mayo on keyboards Bob Mayo. Greatest concert line ever
@@wayL0ck I got to go to the Midnight Special in high school when Helen Reddy was there, but we saw David Essex instead of anybody cool lol. We were all just sitting there on the floor.
No you don't want the studio version. Nor do you want this version. You want "THE LIVE" version and most know about that historical epic. It give me chills whenever I hear it.
When this song came out in the 70s, the voice box was new. A collective WTF? Frampton is one of the most calm and confident players live. Just look at his face. Happy and his playing is total expression.
I'm sure there are others, but the only other artist I can think of that uses it is Joe Walsh.
Actually the voice box was around before this. Go back to Jimi Hendrix's 1968 Electric Ladyland album and listen to crosstown Traffic.
@@davidhattman7649even before Hendrix. Believe it or not the 1st time was on a Country Western ballad
@@gus4u2c That is absolutely correct
Jeff Beck was using that box in the 60's
Everyone owned this back in the day and many of us used the album cover to “seed” our weed..
This entire album rocks!! My personal favorite is “Lines on My Face”
So true Todd especially de-seeding the stuff we had back then.
Lines on My Face live was chills inducing. Great song!
I always de-seeded my $20 1/2 bag on Zeppelins 4th album.😁
Seeded ours with a Stones album.
Frampton was everybody's favorite guitar player instantly as soon as Frampton Comes Alive dropped!
The two best baseball hats going style points 1000%
Man, Frampton Comes Alive (thanks to @michaeldezego340 for the correction!) was such a monster album in the 70s, and this song was everywhere. This version is great, but definitely worth checking out one where he isn't up against the Midnight Special time limit. Another great choice you guys - peace and love from Canada!
Actually called Frampton Comes Alive. And you’re right, it was a monster album!
@@michaeldezego340 You're absolutely right, the ol' brain is apparently on vacation today. Thanks for the correction!
I agree. This was not the best live video version of this tune. Love this song...put some serious wear on the vinyl, but I still have it, though the jacket is a bit worn and raggedy.
This song was played at every party and non stop on the radio back in the day
@@dbradx My ol' brain has been making these kinds of mistakes too much lately. To quote another famous musician: What a drag it is getting old. 🤣
FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE is one of the best live albums ever!
His first 4 solo albums are OUTSTANDING. He is one of the greatest guitar players!
You need to hear the Live version from Frampton comes Alive. That was what was played on the radio back in the day..
This seems to be when he was having heavy drug problems.
This album "Frampton Comes Alive!" was a must have back in the seventies. I know, I had my copy!, and probably watched this episode too
Cassette for the car, LP for home! I think Seger’s Live Bullet was the only other live album I had both places.
@@tonydelapa1911 I think I might have had this on 8-track seeing that I had an 8-track player in my home stereo and car. Cassettes were kind of expensive when they first hit, plus you needed a player, more money.
There were a few albums I've owned on vinyl, 8-track cassette and CD over the decades.
Dark Side of the Moon and Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends by ELP come to mind.
My little brother stole my copy 😊
@@FloridaRocks if my younger sister tried that, I would've been an only child in '76. 😁
@@vernhoke7730 Hahahaha
If you really want to hear it, the "Frampton Comes Alive" version is the way to go. It's hard to explain what a huge monster of an album that was. There were so many songs from it getting so much airplay that it was nearly impossible to listen to a couple of hours of FM rock without hearing one.
Frampton came from Humble Pie, which also had some great songs out there. As enormous as this record was, he remains pretty underrated.
This guy won a Grammy for best contemporary instrumental album in 2007!
The best version and most clear sound is from Frampton Comes Alive, this is from a tv appearance,so the sound is muffled. The entire Frampton Comes Alive is fire 🔥 and it was the highest all time selling live album.
I'm a Black female, 61my brother had the 8 track and back in the '70's this song and "Show Me The Way" was played on the R&B radio stations. Along with Hall & Oates, Bobby Caldwell, Tina Marie.
Yes yes all true I'm from Los Angeles and it was hot bread
What a beautiful Les Paul
Would love to see them do a deep dive into the history of that guitar. From the fan giving it to him in San Francisco, to thinking he lost it in when the plane it was on crashed on the runway in South America, to it being stolen out of the wreckage and being used in S.A., to its eventual return several decades later and the Gibson shop in Nashville helping to restore it back to its glory. He named it the Phenix because of its resurrection from the fire. You can't make this stuff up, what a wild story.
Saw Frampton in Munich in 76 when he was doing this tour. The only musician I've ever seen who I thought was playing just for me.
Wait......me sorry I never feel like anyone else is hearing what he is playing just for me. ❤
I saw Peter do this song at the L.A. Forum in 1977. Frampton played a guitar solo, then a piano solo, then a drum solo in the same song… a 30 minute version of this song….AMAZING
I was 12 years old when I saw this live on The Midnight Special and I was a drummer at the time. It was the most revolutionary and groundbreaking musical performance we had ever seen. It is great to know that it is still turning heads today. Frampton's use of the voice box was awe inspiring.
Watching him play that guitar in sync with his voice. Perfect. Serious player.
I used to clean the office of the guy who invented the talk box. It was littered with Frampton (and other musicians) memorabilia. And like 200 pairs of purple chucks, in the boxes. And a cat.
And this was not forty years ago it was 2010.
In the 70s, I was a teenager, and one Sunday afternoon, you could hear Peter Frampton performing at the local high school football field. Parma, Ohio, suburb of Cleveland. 😮😮❤
Wow
This came out my Sophomore year in high school and you could not get away from it for more than a year!
Great performance!
***You don’t want to hear the studio version!
Time to do some Humble Pie, during the Frampton years!
It’ll be a great intro to Steve Marriott!
It was soooo good to grow up in the era of the true “guitar gods”!
Peace
Give Frampton Comes Alive a listen.
My first concert. Steve Miller, Styx and Derringer all showed up as well.
"Lines On My Face" from the "Frampton Comes Alive" live album will show you why he's regarded as one of the best guitatist of all time. Just beautiful!
Really enjoyed listening to your comments on Frampton.
The story of the guitar he is playing is worth a video by itself, he called it The Phoenix. And if you can imagine, it was presumed destroyed in a plane crash in S. America on tour, and then over 30 years later was found and ended up back in his hands. And it's name was The Phoenix?! It's a crazy story.
The Frampton Comes Alive version is on another level and literally a Rock Anthemn from the 70's.
A fantastically talented technician & innovator on the electric guitar - other instruments, as well, like keyboards. Thanks for your reaction.
We were all blown away when this came out in ‘76. Literally EVERYONE had this album.
Note: you could check out literally any “Midnight Special” from the 70s and there were usually 3 acts (I think.) you can see great live performances, very well produced, and we all stayed up every Friday Night to watch these shows. They’re all amazing. There was every great musical act from rock to country to R&B and disco. Whatever was hot at the time, they would be on this show.
This is the only album Frampton comes alive. I had it on album tape CD now streaming.
He was 24 at this time Frampton live one of the best selling albums of all time.
Peter was guitarist and backup vocalist for Humble Pie. Legend.
I saw some performers at The Oakland Coliseum but I missed Peter Frampton. He is a PERFORMER on stage. He may not have been the first to use a "talkbox" but he was the first I ever saw use it. He is, in my opinion, an underrated guitar player. When I first got to California Peter played with a group called "Humble Pie". Then he went solo. Great reaction, guys. Take care.
Humble Pie's "Rockin' The Fillmore" is a classic live album!
Joe Walsh is really the first to take the talkbox mainstream with “Rocky Mountain Way”
@@uncletom618 I did not know this!! I thought it was a synth. Color me corrected 😆.
I saw him when he was touring on this album. Such an awesome performer. And all the girls loved him ❤️🔥
10,000,000 copies in '76. A&M records was very happy.
I graduated High School in 1976. Frampton Comes Alive was one of our go-to's. Cheers!
Lines on my face....so good.
He was truly talented and still is. Try "By Your Side" live version from album Frampton Comes Alive. It's a sleeper.....an awesome acoustic song.
YES!!!!!!!!
Frampton Comes Alive is the live version you really need to listen to.
Great news! Peter Frampton on tour this month and next month. He is in Windsor Ontario this weekend March 16th 2024 and then across the USA thereafter. This is and always will be one of the greatest guitarists that has ever lived. Phenomenal phenomenal phenomenal for all generations! timeless, incredible, exceptional. Get tickets and go see him live you'll never forget it. I did 12 years ago and I don't regret it. Was the highlight of my five years living in the usa.
A lot of people don't realize that he plays from a different center than a lot of great rock guitarists. He grew up idolizing not the blues greats, but the jazz greats, Django Reinhardt in particular. You can hear the difference in the way he forms his guitar solos.
I always prefer him live, and my favorite song of his is Lines on My Face. It's a slow number with beautiful guitar solos. His most popular songs were Show me the Way and Baby I Love Your Way.
I really enjoy your reactions. I look forward to what you guys have in store every morning. You've got me believing I need to open myself up to some different music genres myself.
This guy started on the road with Humble Pie when he was just 16. They were an absolutely nasty rock/blues band from the early 70's. Listen to "Thirty Days in the Hole" for an example.
Frampton win a Grammy for an instrumental album a few years back. He's actually finishing up his touring as well speak. His health is becoming an issue.
We appreciate you!
@@AirplayBeats I agree completely. This East Coast Virginia guy looks so forward every day to checking out your reactions. Keep up the great work fellas
Thank you fabulous. Please play Humble Pie - Frampton’s band - they are an amazing band. Steve Marriot was one of the best rock singers. You will love their music!
Frampton was in Humble Pie - a killer blues band with Steve Marriott- one of the greatest rock blues singers ever. “ Black Coffee”
Huge in the mid 70s. Was in a band called Humble Pie
Frampton was one of the first musicians to use the talk box, he was an originator. Joe Walsh was also very accomplished using it in Rock during the 70's.
Joe Perry, as well (Sweet Emotion) and Jeff Beck
Wow, talk about 4 stellar guitar players, does not get much better than those guys! RIP Jeff Beck.
It was Joe Walsh who did it 4 years before Frampton
@@robertpiekosz7470 My favorite Joe Walsh is the James Gang Live. He is otherworldly on electric and acoustic guitars plus some fine Hammond Organ. Joe is awesome!
@@vicprovost2561 Absolutely! The Bomber!
You are so correct. This is the ONE they really came to see that day. Every girl had the biggest crush on this hunk who only stood 5'3
The 70's defined rock music. Stars from this era were time served musicians, masters of their craft, not manufactured from talent shows, autotuned and then lip syncing in live gigs!
You two guys actually get it! Respect!
" Wife's shoulders ! " ... almost has a heart attack when you said that. Too funny !

Frampton has a long storied career in Rock music in groups like the Herd, Humble Pie and of course solo. After the John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers album that Eric Clapton is holding the Beano comic book, everyone wanted to be a powerchord blues player like Clapton. Frampton thought about this and decided to be different and lean more to the jazz side of instrument. A great choice for him and his style as he stood out a little differently during the onslaught of British Invasion bands. He was also a featured musician on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album which you guys have really liked. During those sessions he met steel guitar player Pete Drake where he was introduced to the talk box and immediately knew he wanted to get one and learn how to incorporate it into his music. Lucky chance meeting but it changed rock history for sure.
I was in 9th grade when this album came out. Everyone had The Frampton Comes Alive album!!
Frampton Comes Alive is the version you guys need to listen to. It's a must in every collection !!! When it came out in 1976 it was fire !!! Peter Frampton does not get the credit for his phenomenal Guitar playing.
Hey guys, when you can, you must listen to this same song from the Frampton Comes Alive album - it is a longer version and as someone stated you can hear the crowd go wild. It is awesome!
Saw Frampton in 2018 and 2019. Not only is he a phenomenal musician but he seems like such a nice down to earth guy
Afew years Ago I found him on Instagram, After I told him how his music came into my life he commented back and I know it was him phenomenal person.
@@jackieharris2854 that's really nice! he really is a kind person and he truly loves performing.
The definitive version of this song is NOT the studio version. In fact, I would wager that extremely few people have ever heard the original studio song. The ultimate version is the LIVE one from "Frampton Comes Alive", which kicks the original's ass. And to me, "Frampton Comes Alive" is one of the top 10 or 15 live rock albums of all time, alongside Deep Purple's "Made In Japan", The Guess Who's "Live at the Paramount", The Allman Brothers' "At Fillmore East", Al Stewart's "Live / Indian Summer", Bob Seger's "Live Bullet", Zappa/Beefheart's "Bongo Fury", Genesis' "Seconds Out", Steppenwolf's "Live", Yes' "Yessongs", Jethro Tull's "Live Bursting Out" and Santana's "Moonflower" (the live portions only, of course).
Cheap Trick " Live from Budakahn" should be on that list along with Kiss Alive
This song is a part of my childhood for sure, my first concert when I was 10 Rod Stewart, Peter Frampton, and Loggins and Messina in 1975.✌️
Great show! 🎵
Seen him several times in concert, he sounds better and better every time! Peter!!!!!🎉
Outstanding! Glad you went live. Again the Midnight Special rules! Thanks
I agree with your brother. The second half of the song is the turnaround.
Peter Frampton used to play with a band Known as Humble Pie, if you check out any of their songs music, check out Black Coffee or 30 Days In The Hole!!!!!
This guy is a virtuoso on a guitar, Frampton comes alive album was one of the biggest selling albums ever, if you were born in the 70s you definitely had this album!🥁🎸🔥
Great song (and album)! This was my go to "burn one down on the back steps" when I was a DJ at a small town FM station during High School....Yes, Peter.....I do now feel like you do....
BTW, album is Frampton Comes Alive. I dont think I've never heard the studio version of this song?
Trivia David (Jones) Bowie was graduating finishing school where he studied graphic design. He asked his professor about pursuing a music career or graphic design..He told him to follow his dream...The professors name was Prof. Frampton ,Peter Framptons father.
As a seasoned citizen, reliving magical music moments through reactors is a gas.
That guitar Frampton is playing is freaking Legend
Frampton comes alive is a part of the soundtrack of the 70’s!!!
They were so good, live no auto-tune just talent!
"Frampton Comes Alive" is ALMOST as iconic as the ABB's "Live At Fillmore East." I say "almost" since Duane Allman, in my humble opinion, is the greatest guitarist who ever lived.
Peter Frampton is a trip to watch and such an entertainer for sure!!
Framptons comes alive will have all the things you missed.
That song is the most memorable Talk Box performance ever.
Peter even has his own "Framptone Talkbox".
Listen to it off the actual live album! ❤
He's got a live version similar vibe and time as Skynard freebird . That Double live LP went nuke.
OMG , what good Time We had that old Day's and Nights too for Sure ... Do You feel like I do ?
Like Wayne said..if you lived in the suburbs when this album came out it was issued to you...everybody had it...
The version to go with if you want another listen is from the Frampton Comes Alive album. It’s another live version but just audio and is IMHO the best version of this song. Cheers! 👍
Peter Frampton. Legendary 🏆. Playing that Les Paul Custom. The Whole Album is Fantastic.
So many great albums and artists but Frampton Comes Alive has always been one of my favorite live albums since I was a teen and it’s one of those albums that I never tire of!
That bass player is always great behind Framptons solos so funky
Frampton was the first one to really make the talk box super famous...it blew people's minds. It can't be understated how big his Frampton Comes Alive album was..it was THE album that anyone who liked rock in any way had. I was a pre-teen and we'd play that album over and over. He only recently retired due to a physical issue that doesn't allow him to play guitar anymore.
You guys have to check out this song from the cd Frampton Comes Alive from the 70's. You will be able to hear everything the band is doing and it's a great crowd and great performance. You'll love it. I promise.. Have seen Frampton do this song live a few times and it was always good. Kurt from Maine
Saw him live twice, incredible guitar and buckets of fun.
A legit guitar legend
Such a joyful song and Peter had a blast
"I would have been on my WIFE'S shoulders at Oakland Coliseum" lol lol lol. You know you've arrived when you can make references like that❤
You have also heard that talk box in that kind of music before if you had listened to a huge hit right around the same time although much harder rock, called, Hair of the Dog, by Nazareth. And it's funny because my younger sister loved both of them so much even though Peter was definitely a lot more pop than Nazareth.
Also, Stan Sheldon, Peter Frampton's bass player, lived in my hometown for a while in the 90s and the 2000s, and I ate dinner with him a couple times through mutual friends and we also jammed together at a really hopping local venue one night. He's a really cool guy.
That’s one hell of a solo! I played this for my 13 year old son when I was driving him to a swim meet and I said, “take a listen to this.” Mind blown.🤯
Honestly 1 Huge Underated Guitarist!!Saw Him in 90's&Was Blown Away!!!!So Cool to Hear Any LP That isn't Just Live 1!!Dis Man Jammed!!!Portland ME.
Peter Frampton was the first concert I ever attended! 😎👍
Bought the album back in the 7th grade (1976) and still have it. Saw him live September 4, 1977 ROCK SUPERBOWL 3, in Orlando at the, then called Tangerine Bowl. Featuring Peter Frampton, Kansas, The J. Geils Band and Rick Derringer. All for $8.50, those days were the BEST!
I saw many great concerts at the Tangerine Bowl when I was living in Ft. Lauderdale, worth every minute of the drive. Saw the Stones,The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen…
Still have my ticket stub from the Stones concert with the huge tongue on it lol
One of the most iconic songs ever made. I don’t get much better than this live version. We don’t care about his shirt this man is a beast on the guitar and a true American rock God!

Saw Peter twice, post 2000. Once opening for Journey (with Arnel). John Waite took the stage before Peter. Frankly, we enjoyed Peter's performance so much, we bailed on Journey. Saw him again a few years back at the Cerritos Performing Arts Theatre. Just an awesome performer, showman, and talented guitarist. One of best shows ever.
