  • Whether it's Wrestling or BJJ, there is an over emphasis on static drilling.
For me, I define static drilling as doing 1 technique, over and over again, on a training partner who is giving ZERO resistance.
I think this type of drilling is fine to introduce techniques. But at some point I think they become repetitive and almost useless, as far as "learning" goes.
I think that adding in different forms of "live drilling" like the 3 drills I list in this video, will help you get much better, much faster.
With that being said, I'll give you 3 drills that you can do to improve your Wrestling without doing mindless, and often senseless, static drilling all day-every day.
Just to note: these are just a few of the countless live drills I did on a regular basis in college and continue to do now, as a BJJ athlete. I'll teach you more in the future.
    1. Hard In - Easy Out Rounds:
Man A is trying to enter in on a shot/takedown. Man B is Hand fighting with 100% resistance and preventing the entry. Once man A has gotten to their target leg, man B will allow man A to finish with minimal resistance.
    2. Easy In - Hard Out Rounds:
Man A will use any set up/ entry to get into a given takedown position. Man B will allow said Set Up/ Entry without resistance. Once man A has gotten into their Takedown (I.e. grabbed a leg/s) man B will give 100% resistance and NOT allow man A to finish. Man A must learn how to chain Wrestle from failed initial attempts.
    3. Play Wrestling Rounds
The idea is to create a chain of attacks, counter attacks, and scrambles. You want as many positions to happen as possible. There is no winner. Ex. I shoot a single, partner does a funk roll, I back step, they come out the back door, I counter, they follow that up with X technique, and so on.
These are 3 great drills everyone should do in my opinion. Once again, I don't think there is ZERO value to static drilling. Especially when you are learning a new technique. I think it's important to master mechanics and develop a good feel at first.
However, once you've gotten some takedown techniques down, then you can throw these drills into your practice and start getting the real work in!
P.s. I know a lot of people don't really have a wrestling coach to teach them techniques, so if you'd like a place to start learning some wrestling, then copy and paste the link below and find my FREE Instructional:
